His ability. Shirei has a very unique ability. And it's very much a build-around-me ability. As such most of the deck is built around him.
His fragileness. Shirei is very fragile. I dedicated as many spots as I felt comfortable with to protecting him. This is one of those decks that need a general. Shirei flies under the radar the first few games, but he definitely gets harder to stick when people understand his power.
His playstyle. Although this deck isn't really a stax deck, it plays as a resource denial (hitting cards and non-land permanents more often than land) and lock deck. I enjoy this kind of playstyle.
His cost. I try to include plenty of ways to produce a lot of mana. This is so you can recast Shirei, since he starts a whopping five mana already.
The deck is based around abusing Shirei. Play lots of creatures with 1 or less power that relevant ETB abilities, Sacrifice Abilities, or abilities that trigger on dying.
The deck also aims to lock the opponent out of the game. You may strip them of all permanents and hand. You may set up a lock with thoughtpicker witch. Or perhaps a Mindslaver lock.
Why you should play Shirei:
- You like playing with creatures that generally never see play.
- You like the power of recursion.
- You like a deck that really relies on it's general.
- You like locking your opponent out of the game.
- You like calling creatures with power 1 or less, ponies.
Why you should not play Shirei:
- You dislike decks that rely on the general.
- You don't like lock decks.
- You like aggro.
- You like playing lots of staples.
Why you should play Shirei over X?
I'm not going to outline the other commanders. No other general could really pilot this deck. The deck is made in mind with Shirei.
History:
Shirei was the fourth deck for me to build and quite possibly my favorite. I play this deck more than any other and I have spent many hours, along with my girlfriend, altering the swamps to have ponies on them xD.
Personal Bio:
My name is Blake and I'm 20 years old. I live in south Mississippi and I love magic. I became a level 1 Judge a little more than half a year ago and will probably become a L2 within 7 months. I got into EDH about 2 years ago. I hated standard, and legacy requires more dedication generally. I didn't have the time or money to do it. I was looking for something new and a friend of mine mentioned EDH a few times. He didn't have a deck either and had just heard about through word of mouth. So we sat down, looked up the rules and pulled out our cards. 5 Hours later I had a Thraximundar Sac matters deck and a Memnarch Myr Tribal deck. My friend made an Elesh Norn Lifegain deck. Our first few games were crazy. Some lasting hours and we loved it. Eventually we introduced our other friends to it. And now we are all addicted to EDH. It's all we play besides Limited.
My play group is competitive. And I hate to use that term because it holds a negative tone to it. Whenever I tell people that, they think we sit around holding guns to each others temple, cursing like sailors, and throwing fits if we don't win. And I don't think that's fair. We have a BLAST. And I wouldn't play any other way. I have tried playing with a casual group. It just didn't work out for me. Too much complaining for my taste.
I've been playing for a while, and I'm considered the best player in our play group. This is probably because I spend a lot of effort on theorycrafting and deckbuilding and I have a very strong grasp of the rules. As such, I win a good bit. So I suppose results may vary but I have had success with this deck. And I think you will too.
First few turns are pretty simple. Play swamps and any protective equipment. If you need to use a tutor early then do so. Play things like SDT, Extraplanar Lens, Gravepact, Attrition. Anything to get your engine ready for when Shirei hits the board.
Game gets interesting after you get 5 mana. Play Shirei. If you have some hexproof/shroud/indestructible gear then you can spare a turn or two to be able to equip him.
Once you get Shirei out, get the engine rolling. Start making your opponent sac permanents, discard his hand, start controlling his draws, attack his mana base.
Get a draw engine going. Scarecrone, Mindless Automaton, Necropotence, anything that can get you the card advantage to squeeze out a win.
If your opponents aren't the type to concede then beat them with your ponies.
Also (and perhaps most importantly) always refer to 1/X creatures as Ponies.
I've been wanting a coffin queen for forever. Haven't found one.
As far as trisk, pent/triskavus goes (and the butcher) i try to keep the curve low.
Is Kiki good? She seems expensive. I haven't used her in anything before. Is she better than cards like big game hunter?
As far as draw goes I have Necropotence, Scarecrone, Mindless Automaton, Decree of Pain and Promise of power. I agree it's kind of weak. Maybe try to fit Phyrexian Arena and Mind's Eye? Suggestions on any weaker links?
Thanks for the feedback.

It looks like you have enough land/mana rocks that two of three seven-costs shouldn't be a problem. Maybe your metagame is different, but I see a lot of shroud/indestructability in mine, meaning any sacrifice mechanism, like the Butcher and Urborg Justice, is completely game-saving.
I've found Kiku to be excellent, yes. Four-mana recurrable kill in EDH is more than affordable, and unless you exile her she's hard to get rid of with Sherry on the board.
Stuff I'd maybe cut:
- Workhorse. Again, you don't lack for mana in this deck... by the time you hit 6CC especially. I'd rather be dealing 3 damage per turn with Triskelion at 6CC than getting more colourless mana.
- Noxious Toad. Bleh. 3CC, needs an outside sac mechanism, chucks a card of their choice. Gimme Stinkweed Imp any day, to keep the dragons/angels at bay.
- Thornbite Staff. Have you found this often does a lot for you?
- Living Death. I actually hardly ever have enough creatures in my graveyard to make this worthwhile.
- Profane Command. Sort of same complaint as Living Death... I don't often have enough creatures in the 'yard for this to be amazing. Life loss is meh. Fear is meh in Shirei. That leaves the -X/-X.
- Skirsdag High Priest. Even if you had more weenie generation in this deck I don't like this guy very much. Too much contrivance to get a vanilla 5/5 flyer in a powerful format.

Stinkweed would be incredibly weak in my meta. There are only two decks that actually drop big creatures here (kalia and mayael) and they have a bad match up versus this deck,
I can see losing workhorse, thornbite staff and profane command really easily. I've been meaning to cut thornbite for forever.
Living End usually works as a wrath for me. This deck deck wants lots of discard and Noxious Toad hits everyone.
I think i'll cut those three for Mind's eye, Victimize, and coffin queen

Have you done any new testing for this deck yet. It looks really interesting.
I have and I've made some changes.
I post from my phone so it takes quite a bit of effort to update these (hence why I'm slacking on my coming soon sections). As soon as I get a little spare time I'll do an update.
I'm glad your interested in the deck and I encourage you to play it. It's a fun and unique deck to play. Though I will warn you it's not for every group. The deck is pretty attrition-y.

totally run accursed centaur, all you do is sac it all day to sweep the opponent's field, then sac another creature. and if they refill their field, do it again
I'm working on a Shirei deck as well, and I have to recommend Heap Doll. 1 mana recurring graveyard hate at instant sac speed is spectacular. It also works with Scarecrone if you need more draw.
Not a bad suggestion. Unfortunately I've been busy with some of my other decks (Fine tuning Rasputin, Omnath and Zur) and haven't put much time into Shirei. But I think that would be a good replacement for Bottle Gnomes.

One of my earliest decks is Shirei, and it's one of my most beloved. Here's a few potential ideas I've had success with.
Instants/Sorceries
Urborg Justice
Victimize
Creatures
Kiku, Night's Flower
Stinkweed Imp
Triskelavus, Pentavus and Triskelion. These guys not only come back (with their counters back), the first two generate saccable tokens. Invaluable.
Coffin Queen
Soldevi Adnate
Butcher of Malakir (you want redundancy with Grave Pact!)
Fume Spitter
Artifacts
Helm of Possession
Also, do you feel you have enough card draw? I don't see all that much. How about Mind's Eye and Dregs of Sorrow?
Playtesting | Karador, Ghost Chieftain | Narset, Enlightened Master | Ephara, God of the Polis
Established | Gahiji, Honored One | Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker | Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo | Rubinia Soulsinger

I like Victimize. I will probably test it.
