The primary theme of this deck is "Hit me if you Dare". It's control based, with a great deal of attention placed into stopping my opponent just as they are about the do something important. Annoying? YES. Mission accomplished. Well....almost. Gotta win still. Once I exhaust the resources of my opponents, Darien shall sweep the battlefield with his legions of soldiers. One player....4....100....it doesn't matter once the troops have been mobilized.
Suggestions, comments, and criticism is always welcome!!
All my decks try to adhere to these guidelines:
1) Be able to win.
2) Be mostly true to a flavor and a theme.
3) Be good against one or multiple opponents.
5) Be fun to pilot or to play against and interactive.
6) Have multiple paths to victory.
7) Have lots of cool interactions and synergy.
8) Play out differently every game to keep it fun over a long time.
9) Be streamlined and fast to play without excessive upkeep, time-consuming play or overcomplicated boardstates.
10) Integrate the Commanders abilities into the strategy at least a little, but be able to win without ever playing the commander.
The number in front of the card will denote CMC of the creature/spell.
Our meta plays with 40 life totals and no general damage.

Question
Am I going in the right direction with adding more heavy hitters like World Quellar and Twilight Sheperd or should I step back again towards the smaller swarm effect of the deck??
Would also love to know if anyone has any "you should remove this card and replace it with that card" type of comments??? I need to filter out some of the less efficiant cards and fine tune this deck a little more.
You could throw together some kind of infinite combo: Blasting Station untaps whenever a soldier enters the battlefield, and then throws the soldier at your face to net another soldier. Combos with ways to net more guys and to net more life.

I see you took out Mobilization, why? It fits quite well, i think.
That card was in my deck since the beginning and I never used it once. I've played it down before, but 3 mana for 1 1/1 just didn't seem like a good use of my resources.
Yes, most certainly an oversight. Martial Coup has been on my list off and on for awhile now, though it's been too expensive for my 'budget'. The other two however I did not even know existed and are most certainly must haves.
Which cards should I junk to get these into my deck?
Here is a link to my version which I haven't updated in a bit. The only significant change is you have to get cloak, greaves, sword of fire ice, sword of light shadow out quickly protect darien because the moment he hits field no one will attack unless its death that turn. But at the same time you have to run enough stuff (nomads stadium, mana vault, etc...) that hurt yourself so you can generate soldier tokens like crazy. But it is quite viable (especially with Sun titan, which can get most of your artifacts and enchantments back) and can easily take on other generals.

K, totally did a spontaneous thing the other day and pre-ordered the new Elspeth, Knight-Errant vs Tezzeret the Seerker dual pack. Was hoping for a little input in what I should take out of this deck in order make room for my new planeswalker plus a few other unknown goodies.
Checked out the Elspeth vs Tezzeret decklist and have found a few goodies to make use of.
- I'll be adding a Catapult Master.
- I'm considering Kor Skyfisher to be added to bounce my own token generators or even Conclave Phalanx.
- Loyal Sentry is also a very tempting card, being better than deathtouch.
- I'll also be looking at adding Crusade.
- Naturally, Elspeth, Knight-Errant is an obvious in!
- Also very tempted to add Swords to Plowshares.
That's 6 cards to consider adding.....and the drumroll question is "what should I be taking out???"
I plan to give Darien, King of Kjeldor an overhaul. My goal is to output such a strong control style deck that it will be able to withstand and block T6 wins, not necessarily winning by T6 itself, and control until a big soldier swarm is ready for the end blowout.
In refering to the OP, please look at my 'Ideas Section' for the thoughts I have so far (some are from m12 and don't have links yet), and offer comment, suggestions, and advice in making this deck into a force to be reckoned with.
1) Mana Ramp: This deck seems to stink at getting mana onto the table. I don't have boat loads of cash, so cards like Land Tax are out (very unfortunately as I am trying to fit in a W drop theme into the build.) Endless Horizons seems to be my best source to ensure my drops...which isn't saying terribly much. I am looking at Pristine Talisman, especially since it gives life everytime it is tapped (follows the theme).
2) Card Draw: By lowering the curve, I'm emptying my hand faster and top decking sooner. I'll admit, with the additions of Cryptic Gateway and Reveillark, draw is much better than it used to be, but it still feels a little light. Any mass draw spells?
3) Protection: So far, zilch. The more I look at the deckbuild, the more I think it's necessary as Darien, King of Kjeldor seems to be at the center for most of my irritating locks and tricks. Lightning Greaves and Hyena Umbra are at the top of the list for being added in this department, but other options would be nice too.
4) Cuts: So I'm looking at adding the 5 cards below (plus the 2 protection above plus other possibilities) and I have no idea how I'm going to filter another 7 cards out of this deck build. I would love to have some recommendations. Pay No Heed ... no life gain, but just have to name a source. Dispeller's Capsule... more artifact/enchant control Scout's Warning...would be an interesting way to sneak Darien into play as opponent attacks.... Eiganjo Free-Riders...bounce ETB's (have 9) Pristine Talisman....mana ramp and life gain
Mindstorm Crown is probably on the way out. So there's 1. 6 more to go?

The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.

Two generalized problems exist with this deckbuild: Cost and Cuts
For Suture Priest and Auriok Champion, I've looked at them and would love to include them....but cut what? To maintain the diversity of the deckbuild, I just don't seem to have room..
Stoneforge Mystic is just too expensive at the moment. Even with the banning in standard, I doubt she'll drop below $5, and I'll just have to do without.
I used to run Celestial Crusader, but it just ended up being a dead card for me (with the exception of one case). I've since replaced it (as well as other enchant effects like Crusade with cheaper cmc cards like Guardians' Pledge effects....my opponents don't see the one shot attacks as threatening and so it catches them off guard.)
As for Daru Warchief, I'll definately look into getting this card; I've been needing more 'mana ramp' style cards to help my curve and this, despite being 4 mana to get into play, will help nicely.
I've found Coat of Arms to be a "win more" card in this build. Thanks for the suggestion though.
On a side note, I made a small modification to my build. Since I was having a hard time with the card draw, the new Mentor of the Meek HAD to go in! Also, I couldn't resist with the price so I purchased a copy of Skullclamp.
Played a game the other night and both of them got out. THEY. ARE. AWESOME!
(ended up cutting Cloudgoat Ranger and Kami of False Hope for them but I kinda like Kami as it's another 1 drop, so I may swap it back in the near future....just don't know for what yet)

I've always been on the edge with Kami, but just played a game last night and he saved my bacon....so I think he's a keeper....and he's a 1-drop...so win-win.

I've seen several anthem builds with Darien Soldiers. Our meta has a little bit too much spot removal to make them effective. When we have Dolmen Gate at the table, one piece of artifact destruction ruins the monowhite plan, but I most certainly do understand the potency if left unchecked. Will consider it again.
As for True Conviction, I thought that card would have been a bomb in this build and tossed it in right when it was released, but sadly it turned out to be a major dud. 1/1 dudes just turn into 2/1 dudes. Granted, with the anthem effects, it could really stack up fast, but I never wanted this deck to appear threatening....until it was too late. So far...mission accomplished.

Interesting choice with Champion of the Parish. Do you mind that he's vanilla? The most you'd get from soliders would be Vigillance or First Strike...No evasion. I always thought that a swarm approach would be better....

With my Darien deck my Anthem buffs truly shine when I turn all of them into creatures with Opulescence. It usually is a drop, swing and a win.

First, Sun Titan is a pretty certain auto-include here, but I'm really wondering what to take out for it. So far, I've considered Benalish Commander as he just seems to be very slow on the token production. Is there a better option that I am not seeing?
Second, Fencing Ace appears to have potential. I have, however, no idea what to take out for it. Suggestions?

Catapult Master and Catapult Squad are usually must-answers.
You should look into Kjeldoran Outpost. It's a land that makes soldier tokens cheap. No reason not to run it.
You could throw together some kind of infinite combo:
Blasting Station untaps whenever a soldier enters the battlefield, and then throws the soldier at your face to net another soldier. Combos with ways to net more guys and to net more life.
I don't know if you're running things that help offset the lifeloss:
What other good lifegain spells are there? Things that offset the gradual lifeloss of some of these spells?

That card was in my deck since the beginning and I never used it once. I've played it down before, but 3 mana for 1 1/1 just didn't seem like a good use of my resources.
Yes, most certainly an oversight. Martial Coup has been on my list off and on for awhile now, though it's been too expensive for my 'budget'. The other two however I did not even know existed and are most certainly must haves.

Here is a link to my version which I haven't updated in a bit. The only significant change is you have to get cloak, greaves, sword of fire ice, sword of light shadow out quickly protect darien because the moment he hits field no one will attack unless its death that turn. But at the same time you have to run enough stuff (nomads stadium, mana vault, etc...) that hurt yourself so you can generate soldier tokens like crazy. But it is quite viable (especially with Sun titan, which can get most of your artifacts and enchantments back) and can easily take on other generals.

- I'll be adding a Catapult Master.
- I'm considering Kor Skyfisher to be added to bounce my own token generators or even Conclave Phalanx.
- Loyal Sentry is also a very tempting card, being better than deathtouch.
- I'll also be looking at adding Crusade.
- Naturally, Elspeth, Knight-Errant is an obvious in!
- Also very tempted to add Swords to Plowshares.
That's 6 cards to consider adding.....and the drumroll question is "what should I be taking out???"
I'm leaning towards trying to rekindle the "soldier" theme by removing cards like Kithkin Knight and Pentarch Paladin; maybe even Crovax, Ascendant Hero.
Any thoughts as to some cards that just are not as effective?

K, so here I have my Soldier deck. It works well against Uril, the Miststalker, but it still falls short against Zur, the Enchanter and Rafiq of the Many...not to mention my new Ezuri, Renegade Leader elf deck (see my sig for the decklist).
I plan to give Darien, King of Kjeldor an overhaul. My goal is to output such a strong control style deck that it will be able to withstand and block T6 wins, not necessarily winning by T6 itself, and control until a big soldier swarm is ready for the end blowout.
In refering to the OP, please look at my 'Ideas Section' for the thoughts I have so far (some are from m12 and don't have links yet), and offer comment, suggestions, and advice in making this deck into a force to be reckoned with.

A couple of problems I need to work out yet.
1) Mana Ramp: This deck seems to stink at getting mana onto the table. I don't have boat loads of cash, so cards like Land Tax are out (very unfortunately as I am trying to fit in a W drop theme into the build.) Endless Horizons seems to be my best source to ensure my drops...which isn't saying terribly much. I am looking at Pristine Talisman, especially since it gives life everytime it is tapped (follows the theme).
2) Card Draw: By lowering the curve, I'm emptying my hand faster and top decking sooner. I'll admit, with the additions of Cryptic Gateway and Reveillark, draw is much better than it used to be, but it still feels a little light. Any mass draw spells?
3) Protection: So far, zilch. The more I look at the deckbuild, the more I think it's necessary as Darien, King of Kjeldor seems to be at the center for most of my irritating locks and tricks. Lightning Greaves and Hyena Umbra are at the top of the list for being added in this department, but other options would be nice too.
4) Cuts: So I'm looking at adding the 5 cards below (plus the 2 protection above plus other possibilities) and I have no idea how I'm going to filter another 7 cards out of this deck build. I would love to have some recommendations.
Pay No Heed ... no life gain, but just have to name a source.
Dispeller's Capsule... more artifact/enchant control
Scout's Warning...would be an interesting way to sneak Darien into play as opponent attacks....
Eiganjo Free-Riders...bounce ETB's (have 9)
Pristine Talisman....mana ramp and life gain
Mindstorm Crown is probably on the way out. So there's 1. 6 more to go?
By the end, I'm hoping for it to be competitve (as least in terms for my casual meta which includes things like Zur, the Enchanter enchants, Uril, the Miststalker enchants, Rafiq of the Many exaulted, Doran the Seige Tower tokens.
Any suggestions, recommendations, comments, and questions would go a long way to finishing off this build.

Suture Priest and Auriok Champion: More Soul Warden effects are always helpful.
Darksteel Plate, Shield of Kaldra, Champion's Helm, Swiftfoot Boots: Provide protection for your more important creatures, namely Darien.
Stoneforge Mystic: Tutoring for the aforementioned equipment is really, really helpful.
Daru Warchief and Celestial Crusader: These guys are amazing. The former makes all of your Soldiers cheaper (Darien included) and makes them much more potent in combat, while the latter is a wondrous combat trick that can catch an attacked opponent unawares.

Two generalized problems exist with this deckbuild: Cost and Cuts
For Suture Priest and Auriok Champion, I've looked at them and would love to include them....but cut what? To maintain the diversity of the deckbuild, I just don't seem to have room..
The protection suggestions are right up my alley. I'm looking into aquiring Champion's Helm, Swiftfoot Boots and maybe General's Kabuto...would need 3 cuts for them though...
Stoneforge Mystic is just too expensive at the moment. Even with the banning in standard, I doubt she'll drop below $5, and I'll just have to do without.
I used to run Celestial Crusader, but it just ended up being a dead card for me (with the exception of one case). I've since replaced it (as well as other enchant effects like Crusade with cheaper cmc cards like Guardians' Pledge effects....my opponents don't see the one shot attacks as threatening and so it catches them off guard.)
As for Daru Warchief, I'll definately look into getting this card; I've been needing more 'mana ramp' style cards to help my curve and this, despite being 4 mana to get into play, will help nicely.
Wish I had more card draw effects too....
Just don't have room.

I've found Coat of Arms to be a "win more" card in this build. Thanks for the suggestion though.
On a side note, I made a small modification to my build. Since I was having a hard time with the card draw, the new Mentor of the Meek HAD to go in! Also, I couldn't resist with the price so I purchased a copy of Skullclamp.
Played a game the other night and both of them got out. THEY. ARE. AWESOME!
(ended up cutting Cloudgoat Ranger and Kami of False Hope for them but I kinda like Kami as it's another 1 drop, so I may swap it back in the near future....just don't know for what yet)

I've always been on the edge with Kami, but just played a game last night and he saved my bacon....so I think he's a keeper....and he's a 1-drop...so win-win.

I've seen several anthem builds with Darien Soldiers. Our meta has a little bit too much spot removal to make them effective. When we have Dolmen Gate at the table, one piece of artifact destruction ruins the monowhite plan, but I most certainly do understand the potency if left unchecked. Will consider it again.
As for True Conviction, I thought that card would have been a bomb in this build and tossed it in right when it was released, but sadly it turned out to be a major dud. 1/1 dudes just turn into 2/1 dudes. Granted, with the anthem effects, it could really stack up fast, but I never wanted this deck to appear threatening....until it was too late. So far...mission accomplished.
Mind's Eye would be a fantastic card for this build. Will have to get a copy when I can budget it in. Thanks for the thought.
Interesting choice with Champion of the Parish. Do you mind that he's vanilla? The most you'd get from soliders would be Vigillance or First Strike...No evasion. I always thought that a swarm approach would be better....

First, Sun Titan is a pretty certain auto-include here, but I'm really wondering what to take out for it. So far, I've considered Benalish Commander as he just seems to be very slow on the token production. Is there a better option that I am not seeing?
Second, Fencing Ace appears to have potential. I have, however, no idea what to take out for it. Suggestions?
