I played 3 games last Wednesday (and then procrastinated writing about). I 'won' two, and lost one.
Slum Reaper made an impact over Fleshbag Marauder one game, where the opponent had the new Niv out, and mana to shoot twice. He could still have killed the Fleshbag in response to the trigger, but opted that 2 cards were worth more than also taking out my Commander.
Trading Post was not amazing. This is not to say it was bad. It made tokens, it brought back artifacts, and all in all did exactly what I wanted it to do. I used it on average about 3 times per game, so I'm fairly happy. I did forget to block a Sword of Feast and Famine with a goat one game, which was actually what I'd held back the post for. Still beating myself up about that.
Kuon, Ogre Ascendent never flipped. He hit the board, people read him, people killed him, people exiled my graveyard.
Braids, Cabal Minion I played on turn 4 one game, with the secret plan that she was going to kill herself as I dropped Chainer. Never got that far. She got killed before my turn, I dropped Chainer, I lost my graveyard.
Underworld Connections was great. Arena #2. Sad now that I pulled Deserted Temple though, infinites not withstanding. I now want to run it in GB decks with land untappy stuff.
Dementia Altar was beyond sickening. I attribute game 1 entirely to the turn 2 altar. Hot damn, this was brutal. FYI, I only ever milled myself, and man was it awesome.
I got voted out of Game 3. I was focused to 12 life, when everyone else was at 35+. I was saving my chainer mana for a Graveborn Muse and opponent had, but when their Jace made me mill a Kokusho, I didn't contest when they reanimated their own muse. I reanimated Kokusho and sacced twice, then rezzed a 3rd time so it died to an opponent's Sheoldred. Then, in the face of a wrath I rezzed and sacced twice more, and then rezzed a 3rd time in front of the wrath, only to have KK dispatched. Darn. That was game 3, I was later voted out for "stalling the game." Why couldn't this kind of abuse show up during KK testing weeks? Certainly the stronger showing of the Dragon. 25 life drain x4 (5 player game) put me in a much happier place. I was still down to 60 by the time I was voted out, simply due to how much reanimation I was doing. Slum reaper was working overtime keeping boards clean.
Liliana of the Dark Realms got milled away game 1. I did not use XHD to return her. Game 2, I died the turn I drew her. Game 3, I landed her on the board (3 O-stones out, 1 mine, also stony silence, awesome board state). WEhen the silence went, I protected Liliana with my stone. My stone was already covered. The other O stone was already covered. When O-stone 2 went off, I protected Liliana again. I ulted. That's about when I got voted out. I had 12 swamps. And a coffers, and both my sac lands. Sexy hawt.

I'll keep you guys posted as I play it more, though I may have to take it easy on this deck for a while after those 3 games.
What is this 'voted out'? Did they gang up on you or just make you leave the game?
The deck sounds like it is running quite well though. I almost ordered an Altar of Dementia but I didn't. I figured Kuon, Ogre Ascendant would be not so great. Does it live to a board wipe? Does it flip and come back from the grave? Its great with something like Slum Reaper I guess.
It's usually something we do in light of combos, where the general consensus is "Congrats, now go sit over there while we finish for second place." The idea is generally that we'll admit the win, but we'll continue having fun here without overly rewarding combo.
Its use in this situation was rather questionable, as there was no combo in effect, but it was midnight, the game had actually lasted for 3 hours (2 hours of which there were 3 O-stones divided between 2 players in a cold-war situation), it was midnight, and the game had devolved into Archenemy of 4 vs. Me, and I had Chainer and a Slum Reaper, and a bajillion mana, which meant that I could afford to play my general and Reap away till kingdom come, for longer than they could do the same with their Commanders. However, 4 v. Me also meant that I wasn't going very far until I had depleted everyone else's ability to use their Commanders. So it may have been a good decision in the interest of finishing the darn game in a timely manner.
Considering that one player had a Reliquary Tower, an Alchemist's Refuge and 46 cards in their hand, with me as the only reason they were forced into inactivity... the game ended in a timely manner.
The ultimate answer is there is no replacement for XHD or atleast nothing does what he does as well as he does. He really isn't that expensive either. He is $30 on SCG for a Judge Foil and you can get it as cheap as $20 on ebay. If you want to make any mono black reanimator deck, he should be a top purchase priority.

As jmdt said, XHD is rather largely unique due to his ability to return non-creature spells.
As he's a rather unique set of functionality, if you cannot acquire one, there really isn't a replacement. I would try to shore up whatever weakness you feel your deck is suffering from, or replace him with a tutor to seek needed answers.

Oh snap, I didn't realize the judge foils were so much cheaper! $30 is still kind of a lot, but still only ~1/6th the price for a P3K version.
What cards do you most often retrieve with Xiahou? There are only a few non-creature black cards in your list. How often do you get the non-creature cards?
What are your thoughts on Infernal Tribute vs. Necropotence, as I see one in your Balthor list but not the other?
My list runs Necro but I'm really considering Tribute because of the synergy with Spine of Ish Sah. I missed tribute in my Gatherer search because it includes 'nontoken' in its text, and I previously though Claws of Gix was my only option for reusing it, but now that I've seen it, I have to rethink my plans.

I pulled Necro early on in my testing simply due to how strong it was, it honestly felt like cheating. It is by far the best draw ability to black, and the exile clause is barely a drawback.
Due to the 'non-token' clause, Infernal Tribute will never be a major draw engine. It does work well though as an added benefit sac engine, still works well with ghast/skeletons/traitor, and does fun stuff with skullclamp, but what doesn't there? It's effective at what it does, and I'm happy with it. It doesn't blow me away, but it's fairly solid.
For other abuse of Spine of Ish Sah: Trading post. Again, it's not blowing me away, but post is feeling solid to me.
Underwolrd connections is ok in this deck. It is what it is, nothing more or less. There are so many other lands in this deck that are so much more threatening, that if they pop the land with the connections, I just look at them funny. Consider re-adding Deserted Temple if you do add it in though, as mono-black can't really abuse connections like green can.
Harvestor of Souls is the one creature I'm not running right now in the CA suite, and I miss resurecting him in front of a wrath. The problem being that these days I'd rather rez Blood Artist in that situation a lot of the time.
Oh snap, I didn't realize the judge foils were so much cheaper! $30 is still kind of a lot, but still only ~1/6th the price for a P3K version.

The occasional tutor, any enchantment that goes that I want back, creatures I don't mind playing from my hand, and of course, Living Death. There really should be a law against casting Living Death 7+ times a turn.
You are right though, that I have cut a fair portion of my non-creature cards.
Some cards that have come up that I've been considering and would like your opinion on:
Skirge Familiar: I'm not sure if the deck needs a discard outlet, but if it does, this one seems to have the most powerful benefit. It would give us extra reach when we're trying to rez multiple times, sticking new things in the grave each time. Combined with some sort of draw engine (Necropotence, Harvester of Souls, Skullclamp, etc.), I can see this being very powerful.
Putrid Imp: Simply here because the Familiar costs 5 mana, and this costs 1.
Viscera Seer: Cheap, free sac outlet on a stick that lets us filter draws. I don't know if another sac outlet is necessary, but if it is, I like this guy.
Thought Gorger: This card always seemed like a terrible card, but in our deck, it reads "black Windfall on a stick that hits only us and can be used more than once." I don't know how useful that would be, but it's a neat gem that I wanted to share.
EDIT: HOW ARE YOU NOT RUNNING HARVESTER OF SOULS. In playtesting, he just makes everything go insane, especially with a sac outlet. When you rez and wipe the board several times in one turn, drawing 10-20 or more cards is just...I've drawn my deck with him, damnit! He's making me consider the mana-producing sac outlets just so I can go through multiple rez's more easily.

I know, I do indeed miss him at times. I cut him for cost a long time back, and have been running well enough without him, though he was a prime resurrection target. In retrospect I may have axed him during the reign of Balthor, as he's more of a single target utility rez. I may re-examine this.
That's right, clawing my way back in 1 life at a time, and 3-4 times a turn...
A kokusho did show up though, and the extra 20 helped out that set of shenanigans a lot.
This is fantastic.
Also, I've been running my balthor build without chainer for a while now and I've liked it for the most part. Though I do gravely miss the ability to target res any creature that I'd like to. Frown.
So Terrain Generator has been good for you? I've recently cut some of the utilty lands from my deck so I just have more swamps early on. So far I haven't missed Reliquary Tower or Boseiju. Sometimes I have a bunch of basics I wouldn't mind dumping though. It seems good with bloodghast.
Hey I am a little late to the party with this one. If you are going more the artifact theme with Trading Post, Duplicant, and Spine of Ish Sah, I would like to present a few easy to overlook cards for you to consider if you haven't already.
A classic in my brothers old mirrodin deathcloud deck: Priest of Yawgmoth can put you way ahead of the mana curve for some awesome plays and spine is just icing on the cake for him. Similar to the priest, Soldevi Adnate is good, but without being CiP I don't know if he does enough. Of course with the Priest/Chainer and all these artifacts, it makes Myr Retriever/Junk Diver, as well as possibly Arcbound Reclaimer+Skeleton Shard better as well. My that turned into a lot of slots (And I am not sure how effective all that stuff would be)... just some food for thought I guess.
Definitely some good suggestions. I don't know how many of them I will run, but it's definitely more cards for the stack I keep on the side, and some great suggestions.
How does Slaughter treat you? I'm not a fan of spot removal, but with a 4 life buyback, its essentially like paying for chainer's ability and bone shredder, but not interruptable by grave hate.

I've been hit by the "non-black" clause a few times. That said, I tossed it in because sometime you need instant speed removal when Chainer is not available.
A note on anything with Extort - Extort provides us much needed lifegain, but I hesitate on the inclusion, as once Chainer is active, you may be likely to cast less spells. It does also offer combo potential with XHD recusion loops, where I feel it would be most powerful. That said, black lifegain is not to be tossed aside easily. It remains to be seen if the vanillas are worthwhile, but Blood artist and Falkenrath Noble has show us to not undervalue the tiny life draining pings.
Balustrade Spy - If you are playing mill and rez style, this guy could be an acceptable manner of acquiring further targets.
Crypt Ghast - Cheaper Nirkana, with extort. There is no contest here as extra mana stapled with lifegain in a reanimatable package is pure gold for us.
Dying Wish - single use, likely to be more useful in XHD decks, once you start copying abilities. This does provide an additional shot of lifegain, though likely not high enough in this deck for a single use.
Grisly Spectacle - A decent kill spell for the mill and rez style.
Lord of the Void - If you want to switch to a more aggro win con, Mr. Void here is one scary beatstick.
Ogre Slumlord - Anyone running a stax package, or running sac for mana combos with the Altars, this man slots in next to Pawn of Ulamog for extra death trigger duty.
Sepulchral Primordial - Board Presence in a basket, this guy takes a Single activation of Chainer, and radiates it across the board, essentially. A strong card if your gameplan of choice involves beating people upside the face with their own creatures. And yours.
Artifacts and Land
Illusionist's bracers - This cuts a bit of the lifeloss from chainer's ability. Not as useful if your combo is there to reanimate a single target (Kokusho) multiple times, but still adds extra utility.
So I just discovered that I have at least 30 snow covered swamps, if not more (stack of lands remains unsorted). I may switch over, and add Mouth of Ronom, while losing some of the lands I don't use often.
Edit, found 8 more, so a total of 38, making it very easy to go snow should I choose. The only things it affects is Extraplanar Lens, and should I include it, Mouth of Ronom. I'm debating how much I want a colorless, non-artifact damage source.
