reliquary tower is not needed. recycle is so good that the draw skipping and hand reduction does not matter at all. so many other lands make the cut before tower does.
gargoyle castle, fetches, arena, haunted fengraf, glacial chasm....even forest is better than tower 99% of the time here.
You have Sol Ring and Zenith+Dryad Arbor, but still this deck needs more Ancient Tomb:D. Also if you play Recycle first and then Reliquary Tower you will have no hand limit if i am not wrong:p
Ancient tomb is on my list. Quite honestly, there isn't one in any of the local shops or I may have got one aready. If I add Ancient tomb, I will also look at adding Crop Rotation so I can drop it turn 1.
So I let my friend play with Azusa the other night. I handed him worldspine wurm and he stuck it in for Soul of the Harvest. I'll probably change that for Terra stomper at some point, but those seem like the 2 leading candidates. Quite honeslty, the deck works best when I ignore a lot of these medium size guys and just run up to the big guns. I'm starting to think a version lighter on creatures and heavier on ulility and/or land would be a bit stronger. Since my GF does play this deck, I don't want to get to complicated with it though.
He totally beat my face in with that worldspine wurm. After playing boundless realms for 22 total land, the next turn he Green Sun's Zenith'd for X=15 for worldspire wurm. Yeah, that card is imposing. In a way, worse than Kozeliek, Butcher of truth. When I kill Kozeliek, its dead. Worldspine still keeps 15 power on the field when it dies so you have to be very careful how you deal with it.
As a side note, excited about the full art Mwonvuli Beast Tracker I got over the weekend!!!
Every Azuza build should have Ancient Tomb. No exceptions. The faster you can power out your Azuza the better. Another such card that ought to be in the deck is Crucible of Worlds. With Four Fetchlands and Strip Mine, it is very easy to set up the Crucible to thin your deck out immensely... as well as the famous Strip Mine lock. Boseiju is a land that also needs to be in the deck, as it is critical ensuring big spells like Genesis Wave and Tooth and Nail resolve.
As mentioned, you deck does have some serious chaff in it, Slice in Twain really stands out as major chaff, but it isn't all that far removed from a tuned build. Of course, the biggest problem I've found with Azuza is that it cannot defeat Arcum Daggson decks. They just fetch their Darksteel Forge, and there is nothing Azusa can do to stop them, unless there is something I am missing, I really don't want to have to run Splinter to have an out to that combo deck.
For one thing, Hornet Queen. While it does give you five fliers, you are paying 7 mana for it. With as much mana as Azuza can dish out, a better card would be Ant Queen, because it combos extremely well with the absurd amount of mana you do have. Caged Sun stands out as another card. While Caged Sun does add an additional green for all your forests, and pumps your guys, I prefer Mana Reflection. I'm not going to say Caged Sun is bad though, however Mana Reflection doubles all your mana from any permanent that taps for it.
Dryad Arbor. You have Green Sun's Zenith. While it may not seem like the best use of Green Sun's Zenith to tutor up Dryad Arbor turn one, going turn 2 Azusa is one of the best things this deck can do. Dryad Arbor gives you another way of doing so. Burgeoning is also a key card in this deck, and one I like way better than Rites of Flourishing. Burgeoning is another way to accelerate Azusa out, and oddly enough, sometimes renders Azusa pointless as you got all your lands out already.
about the ant queen thats true but i had many problems with flyers so i took in cloudthresher and hornet queen for extra blockers with deathtouch.
of what i can say about this deck, it needs draw draw and draw cards cause i empty my hand in a few turns. thats where Rites of Flourishing popped up for me i think its great !
i updated my deck now let's see how it goes !
Azusa wants to be the agressive deck at the table. Hornet Queen, but does nothing with the aggro nature of the deck. I had it in at 1st, but all it really does is put you on the defensive when you want to be attacking. Silklash Spider really is the best answer to fliers Azusa has at her disposal.
I run Mwonvuli Beast Tracker in part to help find Silklash Spider or Cloudthresher. Additionally, I find Fierce Empath to be an invaluable tutor most games.
The single best way for you to improve this deck IMO would be adding Crucible of Worlds and a few fetchlands. When you run out of your hand, you can start replaying your feches from your graveyard to continue growing your mana base. Additionaly, if you have out Rampaging Baloths or Avenger of Zendikar along with Azusa, you can get six landfall trigers by playing a fetch from the graveyard 3 times. Crucible of Worlds also has an infamous synergy with Strip Mine to blow your opponent's lands away.
Harmonize and Garruk, Primal Hunter are two great options available for card draw. I've drawn over 10 cards several times with big Garruk. I don't personally run Cloudthresher, but its not bad. I would just run the one Cloudthresher, and with the absurd amount of tutors available, that ought to be enough. Though to be honest, there is honestly no better feeling than going 2nd Turn Natural Order for Vorinclex. I've done it twice off of Ancient Tomb and a Green Suns for Dryad Arbor. But this is also possible off a 1st turn Burgeoning in a multiplayer game as well.
I caught a Misty Rainforest cheap and picked it up tonight before it goes up any more. Been meaning to do that for a while. I added it in for a Forest.
So, I've neglected this deck for a while, but its time to start looking at refining it again now that I should have some fundage available. I was looking at cards the other night and Natural Order looks like a cards I want. Ancient Tomb and its partner Crop Rotation also want desperately to work their way into the deck.
After Primetime is banned its not as good, but Tooth and Nailshould still be worth an inclusion. Worst case, I can fetch Regal Force and Avenger of Zendikar, or two eldrazi. With that note, I probably also want Regal Force for more card draw. Garruk, Primal Hunter has also been on my list for a while for more cards draw.
i played some games last week but i had problems with drawing cards again people destroyed my draw engines all the time. i think we need more stuff like solemn simulacrum cards that draw you a card and do something else. maybe you guys with good results can post your decklists too ?
Pretty much everything gets blown up when I play Azusa so I know the feeling, lol. Harmonize and Soul's Majesty are decent draw options that can't get blown up. Soul's majesty can easily draw 10+ cards if the deck is doing what its supposed to. Garruk, Primal Hunter is another draw option that is harder to deal with.
You have such a sweet curve, why not use Birthing Pod?
I have a Birthing Pod laying around so I'll have to try it the next time I use Azusa. I can see it having value, especially if I cater the deck towards it.
So I got Garruk, Primal Hunter over the weekend, at long last!!!!! Now, I have no idea what to swap it for. I'm thinking I may could take another Vanilla beater out for it, but I don't want to lose too many creatures yet either. Harmonize and Soul's Majesty both come to mind. Soul's Majesty can be vrilliant, but is also dead without creatures.
So I had a totally crazy game playing Azusa the other night.
On turn 7 I was able to sweep the field playing Triumph of Hordes and Overwhelming Stampede together when I had Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer's large butt on the field to make everything get +10/+10. 1st time I've ever used Azusa for an infect kill, lol.
How much use do you get out of that Sol Ring. It seems not so good after the first turn.
Yeah, Sol Ring is great turns 1and 2 and maybe 3 and basically useless after that. I have a Crop Rotation sitting on my desk that I many replace it with. That should help find Eye of Ugin early to help facilitate Pre-Primetime banning shenanigans. At some point I need to hunt down Ancient tomb to keep the same basic functionality that sol ring had, but in land form. It will likely be the next card I pick up for the deck unless you guys have a better suggestion.

This is actually a very valid point. Once Azusa runs out of gas we are in big trouble. The deck shrivels up and dies. I ran quite a few test draws and smaller creatures as you suggest, made it perform much smoother and more consistently. Regal Force is probably the second best draw engine after Horn of Greed

Yeah gas is a huge concern in this deck. We don't deal with top deck mode quite so well. I generally haven't had issues with card draw, but when I play this multiplayer, I also player slower unless I have a kill-the-table combo in sight. Early game, Horn of Greed is the best bar none. Late game, Recycle is probably the decks best draw engine. At first I thought the cards was terrible, but it grows on you after you refine the deck a bit Recycle will draw you as many cards as you can play, with the penalty of a smaller maximum hand size. With Seedborn Muse and a flash enabler, recycle can get completely absurd in what it lets you do.
Regal Force is a card I've been meaning to pick up, but for whatever reason haven't yet. Its the top option for Tooth and Nail, but I'm not running that right now. Generally it should draw for 2-3 and when tokens are out out 10+.
When I started the deck I had all the 7-8 cost wurms and other big beaters, but I found really quick that lowering the curve makes the deck more consistant. We need a few places to put our big mana, but otherwise, it likes a lower curce like any other deck.
A End of the turn Avenger of Zendikar into Triumph of the Hordes/Craterhoof Behemoth/Overwhelming Stampede is a nasty, game winning play
Chord of Calling looks great. I will definitely have to give that a try.
I'm probably going to pick up a Tower of Calamaties and add to the deck per a suggestion to bolster its card draw abilities. Its seems insane with Seedborn Muse in the deck.
That new Skarrg Goliath looks like a tasty possible option for the deck. Not sure if I like it over anything else in the deck, but 9/9 is no joke. Not sure I would ever use the combat trick, but it is discussion worthy.
