Just found Dread. Higher CMC, but a pretty sweet "don't attack me or else" card. That with ghostly prison should keep people off your back... the only downer is actually the shuffle back into your library mechanic. In this deck you want it in the graveyard to get back.
Im kinda curious how Stensia Bloodhall has been playing in your deck it definitely has a usefull effect but the cost for it seems a bit high. I was playing my version of this deck against a friend and he suggested a couple of enchantments I haven't thought of yet and was wondering what you think about them, Debtors' Knell and Necropotence.

Every rarity gets good cards. That means that some mythic rares will be tournament quality as will some commons, some uncommons and some rares. My promise wasn't that mythic rares wouldn't get good cards but that we wouldn't limit the good cards to only being mythic rare.
Bear this in mind the next time a powerful mythic rare is spoiled
Thanks to chaostheory90 for finding this quiz for me

I had it in play a couple times in last weekends games. It never won me the game, though there were a couple close games where I noticed "had it been in play, it would have won". And it never held me back. It doesn't come in tapped and has no drawback other than not producing colored mana, so I'm viewing it as a "why not" case for now.
I was playing my version of this deck against a friend and he suggested a couple of enchantments I haven't thought of yet and was wondering what you think about them, Debtors' Knell and Necropotence.
Imo, great cards generally speaking. Knell goes in every other BW deck I run but in this deck I have a pretty low creature count so I think punishments are more useful. If your Kaalia build has a lot of etb effect creatures, I think it's very much worth it (especially with Academy Rector and Enchantment recursion in the deck).
Necropotence - Amazing card draw. Drawback in this deck being that the additional life loss can run you out of life a little too quickly. And there is always the possibility of getting mindslavered that makes me hesitant.
A note from the weekend games:
Played several multi and several duels. Multis went well finishing strong in most and winning one. In all cases my deck sped the game along which I liked. Games that would have probably taken much longer finished up rather quickly because of the mass damage going on.
The duels were mostly against fast/constant pressure aggro decks (Rafiq), and I never seemed to be able to get "set up". Always using resources to survive another turn and just "hang on". I might need to work on that.
One epic play from a game - I was testing out Reverse the Sands. I had Spiteful Visions in play. My opp (Karador) was at 20something life and I was down to 4 having taken a beating from my own punishments and his beaters. On my upkeep, Visions took me to 2 life, played Sands switching life totals with him, he died at his upkeep from Visions.
I'm seriously considering giving Sands a permanent slot. It was a lot of fun and very useful on a couple occasions. It's always fun to watch someone's face go from "I'm getting ready to finish you" to "oh crap, I'm dead".
My mistake re Ghostly Prison... been looking at so many Kaalia decks, and have it in mine. I think the more traditional Kaalia build works better for duels because the aggressive strategy of quickly cheating out fatties has less hate to deal with and can gole out 40 points of damage pretty easily. I think the whole point of the punisher build is to spread the heat around a table of players and keep it off you.
Have you considered Rakdos the Defiler? Kaalia gets around his attack trigger, and if he hits he really hurts your opponents board! Lovin the deck!
He was in the original build, there was just sooo many times I was unable to use him. Once I started dropping creatures and adding punishments he just couldn't make the cut.
I'm still tempted to have a seperate Angel/Demon/Dragon Kaalia deck sitting around besides this punisher build. No other deck plays/feels quite like Kaalias basic strategy and it's fun.
I think it'd be fun to have both so you could mix it up a bit. Play the Basic strategy first, and then switch to the punisher deck as a 'sideboard' of sorts.
Hey Blackjack, just wanted to let you know I had a fun night with my version of the Kaalia punisher machine. First game I was doomed from the start as it was me against two mono-blue players with plenty of graveyard hate in their decks. I just made it my mission to be a thorn in their side the best I could. Had Ghostly Prison, Stranglehold, Michiko Konda and Painful Quandary on the board which induced quite a few curses from them. I was just proud to sneak those cards past their counters.
The second game was friendlier to my deck, and I was able to tutor up and drop Goblin Bombardment as well as Karmic Guide and Reveillark. Fun times. I like how flexible the deck is. You can play multiple games and never do the same thing.

Just a quick question, Blackjack, as I have been inspired to play a Punisher style deck in my local EDH League: Do you think the deck would be viable with a slight strategy switch and general switching to Tariel Punisher with a small reanimation support package? There's a player in the league that already runs Kaalia so I don't really want to play her as the general and not be able to play the deck at the same time, etc..
Perhaps this is better left to a PM, but as I was inspired by yoru deck list I figured I'd ask you. Thanks for any response, PM or otherwise
Very impressive deck. This is a fascinating way to take Kaalia, one that I had not considered, and looks like it would be fun to pilot as well. I am currently in the process of designing a Kaalia deck. I call it "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due." (Named after a Megadeth song, you should add it to your playlist;)) Mine revolved primarily around making Kaalia nigh impossible to remove with spells like Grand Abolisher, a couple swords, Darksteel Plate, Mother of Runes, Lightning Greaves, Deathless Angel, and a ton of recursion. I think your deck could be more fun and less repetitive while also being more resilient. Very cool and inspirational.
Current EDH decks: RAshling the Fire Starting Pyro Pilgrim GWRhys "There were just too many" the Redeemed UBOona, Queen of the Fae, Hater of Decks UBRLord Tresserhorn and The Walking Dead
"I think that they should ban all mana producers, including land, since mana lets you do all of the most broken things in the format..."

She'd be fine. Her ability seems like a pain in the butt to use, but it wouldn't see really heavy use in this style, the commanders more of a color-enabler than anything. Since you'll be going a bit heavier on recursion, of course Life's Finale immediately comes to mind to stock yards for Tariel. You might have a look at the Ghost Council deck in my sig, after the decklist is a section with a TON of combos/mini-combos/reanimation tricks that might give some ideas.

Thank you sir, much appreciated. She has been a lot of fun for me. Ghost Council will always be my baby, but Kaalia has worked her way into my #2 fav spot.
I call it "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due." (Named after a Megadeth song, you should add it to your playlist)
. Oh, I'm familiar. When that was released was about the time I started playing guitar, can't believe I forgot about that. Added, and "Symphony of Destruction" added as well.
Had a couple good games with her tonight, very fun. Pulled a win out of my butt on the second game with Vicious Shadows and some sac fodder killing two players the turn it came down, and the last player on the next turn. That card is amazing!
Hi Blackjack, got a few questions on your Kaalia deck as I'm building one and I'm trying to understand your deck concept. Sorry about the point form, as I try not to miss out on any questions.
1. Dual lands aren't on your decklist. Is it only cos of price?
2. If you were to put in the 3 duals, scrubland, badlands and plateau, which lands would u remove from the list? Basic or vivids?
3. How bout vindicate? It's strictly better than mortify.
4. Would you remove mortify if vindicate went in? Or would you keep both?
5. What do you think of swords to plowshares?
6. You removed anger from the list. Do you have any thoughts of putting her back?
7. You removed savage beating from the list. Do you have any thoughts of putting it back?
8. This deck has alot of high cmc cards. Any thoughts of putting in cards like gilded lotus?
9. How often do you find strip mine useful in your deck?
10. This deck relies on alot of high cmc enchantments some of which also damages you. How would it fare against fast creature decks?
11. This deck has quite afew enchantments. Would you consider putting in Enlightened tutor for them? Or you could use it for early ramp if you're mana screwed at the start.
12. What do you think is the weakness of your deck?
13. If you had space to put in say... 2 to 3 cards. What cards would you choose?
I have been working on a punisher build ever since I saw your list, BlackJack. It's pretty much completed to my liking (minus an Ankh of Mishra because I refuse to play with a white-bordered one and FBB is hard to come by). Just wanted to drop in and say it is quite fun.
I have been considering adding "tax" effects like Ghostly Prison and Windborn Muse, but since they only affect me I've held off on that. We need to punish everyone equally at all times. To that end, the best tax I have located is Isolation Cell.
1. Dual lands aren't on your decklist. Is it only cos of price?
Yes, If I had'em they would go in.
2. If you were to put in the 3 duals, scrubland, badlands and plateau, which lands would u remove from the list? Basic or vivids?
Probably Vivids.
3. How bout vindicate? It's strictly better than mortify.
I only have one Vindicate and it's in my Ghost Council deck.
4. Would you remove mortify if vindicate went in? Or would you keep both?
I'd probably remove mortify
5. What do you think of swords to plowshares?
Some of the best spot removal in the game, hands down. In most of my decks, I prefer running a lot of targeted spot removal, as opposed to lots of sweepers. But in this deck, not having a lot of creatures myself, I've found keeping the sweeper count pretty high to be very beneficial.
6. You removed anger from the list. Do you have any thoughts of putting her back?
No, but only because I rely so little on creatures attacking. If I was heavier in the "angel/demon/dragon" thing, I'd put anger back in a hot second.
7. You removed savage beating from the list. Do you have any thoughts of putting it back?
Same as Anger. I totally love this card, but it needs to be in a more combat damage oriented build than mine is.
8. This deck has alot of high cmc cards. Any thoughts of putting in cards like gilded lotus?
I always think about adding more mana help as well as more card draw. There's no doubt the deck is lacking in both and would benefit from either. The only problem is that to add more of either, I have to take away from another category and as of now, I'm fairly happy with the balance. Lol, all I need to do is find a few punishment cards that also draw me cards and ramp.
9. How often do you find strip mine useful in your deck?
Always, and for every deck I play. Just last night I had to tutor for it (with wayfarer) to kill off a Cabal Coffers that would have ended me the next turn. I can't imagine running a deck without it.
10. This deck relies on alot of high cmc enchantments some of which also damages you. How would it fare against fast creature decks?
Someone going aggro early on me hurts really bad. It's not a great deck for 1v1 for that reason, though it can hold it's own given you draw the right cards. In multiplayer you can make up for a lot of that with some political skill. Lately, I've been including Reverse the Sands in the deck and I've really had good luck with it. It's pretty funny to have someone steadily beating on you, a couple punishments in play hurting everyone, be at a couple life left and switch life totals with the guy that's been beating on you. I think I'm going to make that card a permanent inclusion.
11. This deck has quite afew enchantments. Would you consider putting in Enlightened tutor for them? Or you could use it for early ramp if you're mana screwed at the start.
Solid card, I like it.
12. What do you think is the weakness of your deck?
Definitely fast aggro. Or getting hit with an early Sorin Markov.
13. If you had space to put in say... 2 to 3 cards. What cards would you choose?
Hmmm... More draw, ramp, or sweepers would be really welcome. But so would more defensive stuff like No Mercy.
As for draw, since you already have phyrexian arena, I can only think of wheel of fortune for red and bloodgift demon for black. Dark Confidant will hurt you too much heh.
As for ramp, maybe mana crypt. But that would hurt sometimes too. How bout an orzhov signet for additional ramp. I noticed you left out that signet. Also, might you consider a darksteel ingot not only for mana ramp but also for its indestructibility against your jokulhaups and obliterate?
For sweepers, was considering nevinyrral's disk and ob stone. And since you put in hallowed burial, i guess you could put in wrath..etc. But im leaning on the ob stone and disk currently since theres not too much white in the deck.
What are your thoughts on Jiwari as opposed to Earthquake?
On a different note, what are your thoughts on Dragon Tyrant?
Jiwari doesn't really do it for me from just looking at it, but I've never tried it. Seems like most of the time you're just going to want him as a sweeper spell like Earthquake, only he'll cost more to do it, and he won't get the life totals any closer to zero like Earthquake will. The possibility of recursion is nice, but I'm not sure it's enough to make up for the rest.
Dragon Tyrant, he's good when dropped in behind Kaalia, but without her his cost is pretty high, plus the RRRR upkeep would be hard to pay at times in a 3-color deck, and definitely wouldn't leave you much R to pump him with. I think Kaalia has better "followers" available.
Have you tried looking at Desolation or is that too weak, especially late game?
I would say so, yes.
My build is different than BJ's (and needs updating as well), but I prefer to play Kaalia and drop mass LD as quickly as possible. Getting rid of all your opponents resources as you cheat in large creatures that they can't keep up with is the best way to play aggro Kaalia, imo.
Hey BJ, I've recently decided to get into Commander, and I'm creating my variation of your Kaalia build as my first deck. I was hoping you'd answer some questions for me.
First, I'd like to put in a few more beatstick angels in the deck, to keep things interesting. I was considering thinning out the recursion/sacrifice engine for it. Would you suggest doing this, or would you take something else out? Can you think of any cards that would be really good in here, going with a mid-game punisher/late-game angels and demons feel? I know I want Anger back, for example.
Secondly, I notice you're missing a lot of the staple white removal cards such as Swords to Plowshares or Path to Exile. Why no love for them?
Finally, AVR is fully released! I want to suggest some cards, and will you tell me what you think of them in this deck?
Avacyn-a 7/7 beatstick that makes your permanents indestructible. I really like this card because Kaalia drops angels in the declare attackers phase, before damage. So you can attack with her, drop Avacyn, and make her indestructible.
Griselbrand-in a punisher deck, lifegain seems cute. Also, just imagine the sheer awesomeness of having Avacyn and Griselbrand join forces against their will, under the might of Kaalia.
Bonfire of the Damned- Not sure about this card, but I figure it could be some useful red mass removal in a pinch
Slayer's Stronghold- I like cheap haste, yes I do. I figure I could replace the Bloodhall for it.
Bone Splinters- Not sure if it's worth a slot in the deck, but one mana for a sac engine and a spot removal attached seems ok.
Exquisite Blood- LOVE. Mana barbs sapping your life away? Cast this and have it all back, plus more by your next turn!
deck and i put in some cards such as Avacyn, Angel of Hope (already bought the single, already shipped!), Darksteel Plate, Aegis Angel and Shelter to make Kaalia of the Vast indestructible/protected so that i can keep hitting with her until i have enough faties on the field to win the game and i found this to be way more effective than trying to keep her hidden till late game. Also, i found Grafted Exoskeleton combos beautifully with It That Betrays in this deck as i can switch users for the exoskeleton from Kaalia to the fatties without losing her and kill my opponents in 1 hit.

Exquisite Blood- LOVE. Mana barbs sapping your life away? Cast this and have it all back, plus more by your next turn!
