Introduction: In a second posted deck, I'll be trying to use Dream Halls to power out Progenitus and other fun spells in to cause shenanigans and mayhem. I would like to stress that this deck is a work in progress, and I usually post what I am playing. I'm also under-powering this deck a bit, locally, due to my meta.
I'll post an optimal deck in addition to my current deck. I think that its important to show how decks can change based on metagames, who you're playing and their strategies. I wont own all the cards for the "ideal deck" (Keeping it realistic however.) It's meant to show, in a vacuum, what the deck is truly capable of.
Selection of the Commander:I feel that Progenitus is a scary general. I've chose Progenitus over other 5 color generals due to awesomeness. Reaper King costs between URBGW and 10. However, if I'm cheating things into play, I might as well make them pretty good.
Child of Alara is great. He/She/It makes a good general, acting as a sweep, and using sac outlets and cards such as Cauldron of Souls allow you to regenerate your field while making it difficult for opposing players. The mana cost is affordable, but the idea is rather boring.
Which left Progenitus as my go-to choice for ridiculousness. He has protection from everything. Seriously, everything. Sweepers and counters are the only things that remove him (and sacrifice effects). He also has developed intelligent thought, telling Nicol Bolas to "fly off and meddle away from his rampaging." Progenitus has protection from Nicol Bolas. Take that.
Interview with Progenitus Progenitus is a needy general. He demanded to be interviewed.
Q: What was it like being worshiped by some of the meanest Commanders being played
A: It was funny. While my puny, harmless peons like Sharuum the Hegemon cannot hurt me with their combos, Rafiq of the Many once tried a campaign for my many heads. [snickers] That didn't end well.
Q: Nicol Bolas is a very powerful planeswalker. What was it like knowing your home was manipulated by the most evil one?
A: I hated it. I tried to eat him once. He planeswalked away. Come back puny dragon. I have no mind for you to shatter (not that you could, Protection from Everything) and I exist solely to make people tremble from my presence.
Q: In your opinion, what are your biggest weaknesses?
A: I hate shining lights of white and black light. God's Light is also annoying. Few other things make Progenitus tremble in fear.
Q: Do you always speak in third person
A: Only when I'm about to devour someone.....
Q:Who are your best friends?
A: Volrath introduced me a place of Dreams and the Convergence of Alara made me delighted. Memnarch is my best bud too. He gave me the Infinity Gauntlet as a birthday present many suns ago. HAHAHA. I'm so funny. I also like anyone that lets me come into your mortal realm to cause havok for free. ROSEWATER! I DESIRE MORE OF THESE FRIENDS. BRING THEM TO ME. I HAVE PROTECTION FROM YOUR PUNY TREE FORM
Q: Can I call you Brogenitus
A: Only if I can drink Natty Ice and have my own "Scumbag Progenitus" meme.
We'll see Brogenitus, we'll see....
Can I ask you a question?
uh...sure
Where does Norin go when he disappears? Norin appears to be a tasty mortal. WHERE CAN I FIND HIM.
Well, apparently he has a room. Gaka often shoves him in there. You could eat him, if you can catch him before he goes to his room.
Brogenitus hungers for his flesh.
Deck History:
I've always wanted to build a Progenitus deck. I've always thought that Dream Halls.dec in Legacy was cool, using a few cards to get a majority of the deck. The idea of using cards like Iona to lock a player out seemed pretty cool.
My friends had started to get out of hand. Norin the Wary was giving me a sufficient break from the monotony of attempting to stop 3 people with a Reanimator style The Mimeoplasm deck. I was wasting too many resources trying to stop shenanigans because other people had differing, sometimes twisted and admittedly stupid priorities. Ghave, Guru of Spores comboing out was a non-factor. Someone else started playing Ghave exclusively, and I inevitably ended up as a target. I was also starting to get bored with the idea of the infinite combination.
Someone prompted me to finally stop being a wuss and just build my Progenitus deck. I'd been working on the land base, mostly through trades, for nearly a year, being 2 "checklands" short of a full 10. I built it and it's provided a fresh relief from the boredom that I was experiencing. With the metagame stagnating into general posturing and idiocy (Exiling Veteran Explorer, realizing that other people's threat evaluation is lacking. Hint: Kill Animar instead of the Conquering Manticore+Norin the Wary+Cloudstone Curio because HE can combo out and I can only steal a (1) creature a turn >_>) Oh hey, Brogenitus here. I'll be in italics. CAUSE I'M AWESOME. Commenting as I go.
I found Progenitus to be fun. It was exciting, fulfilling. I intentionally put in elements of group hug to keep people happy, away from me. Edric, Spymaster of Trest, Vision Skeins, Veteran Explorer, and Hypergenesis were all to help keep people off my back, while helping me draw, fix my hand, and plop important pieces onto the field, uncountered. I'm also getting a chance to play 5c cycles, such as the 'Command' Cycle from Lorwyn (Cryptic, Primal, Austere, Incindiary, Profane). I'll probably add other cycles to the deck for fun.
The Deck: Without further jabbering on about why I'm playing this, here's a current build of what I'm playing.
Optimized Decklist: Here's an envisioned decklist for the future, helping to shape future acquisitions with an emphasis on streamlining, accelerating, and adding more cycles. (I like themes)
Coming Soon! (Top secret research is being conducted into the optimal build)
Land Breakdown:
I've never wanted an expensive landbase. The Shocklands from Ravnica block were acquired for their ability to be tutored for by certain land tutors, discussed further down. I acquired the M10/Innistrad 'checklands' because they provide further mana fixing, while feeding off of the Shocklands, allowing them to enter play untapped. Halimar Depths is good for setting the top of my deck. That's it. It's a very solid card however.
The Alara Trilands are solid alternatives to several other lands to almost all other lands. They tap for three colors, with a draw back of CIPT. I'm willing to take a tempo loss and augment my plans in other areas with some Hippieness. Hippies are nice people, I think. Progenitus told me they taste good. Meteor Crater is a great color fixer that makes it funny because I get mana based on my opponents, and in 5c, it is always tapping for colored mana. Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse are used to power out some basics and fix my colors. I've included a few more forests and islands than mountains/swamps/plains due to the card draw and fetch spells in Green/Blue. Those two colors are powering the underlying portion of this deck.
I like lands....Sometimes I like burning lands....Especially if they continue to burn......
Artifact Breakdown
The most important piece is Fist of Suns or the Infinity Gauntlet. Progen er...Brogenitus loves to be played for cheap. Yeah buddy. (Please tell me this wont be a thing..)
Other artifacts, like Gilded Lotus are there to create gobs of mana. This deck needs colors mana like I need oxygen. Create all colors of mana, enjoy it. The borderposts are in the deck for this reason. I may remove them for more useful cards. The tempo loss is a bit unbearable, and there's only one, good, bounceable land. Wayfarer's Bauble will become an Expedition Map, because it allows me to grab any land. Similar upgrades will be made elsewhere. Brogenitus likes efficiency
Crystal Ball I enjoy over Top in this situation. With few true responses that are needed, I prefer the to-the-bottom abilities of the Ball. A top may be added later for extra cycling potential on EOT's.....
Nihil Spellbomb and Elixir of Immortality are two different effects. One regenerates my graveyard to my deck, allowing for extra shenanigans, and the second gets rid of a pesky graveyard. Of the two, the Elixir can be subbed for a Tormod's Crypt depending the situation.
Creature Breakdown
I realized that the main problem with this deck was the lack of a win condition. I can get Brogenitus into play, but he takes 3 turns to kill someone. Hence a previous enemy of Brogenitus became an ally. Brogen, meet Rafiq of the ManyWHAT? I dont want to fight that idiot. I ate his best lieutenant. I thought he was a breath mint.. Shut up! Deal with it. Back to the conversation, Rafiq allows Progenitus to do 1-turn kills. Double-Strike, Exalted is brutal, and by brutal, I mean awesome.
Jhoria of the Ghitu is important as well. She allows a 4 turn Delay on any large card in my hand for 2. Anything except for Brogenitus. Pretty slick.
Taurean Mauler is simple good stuff. I play spells, you play spells, and no one has a dedicated Werewolf EDH deck. Rosewater hated werewolf legend. Silly Rosewater, even Brogenitus likes werewolves. I eat you now.
I wanted to play one of my favorite engines ever, Soverigns of Lost Alara. It's pretty cool. He gets auras and attaches it to a creature if its attacking alone. Works great when Brogen hasn't hit the field yet, and helps as a secondary strategy. Auras to be discussed below.
Mossbridge Troll is great. It also serves as another alternate win condition to Brogenitus beats and Sovereigns shenanigans. We'll discuss the combination a bit below, but most people will be familiar with it.
Veteran Explorer is a group hug card. Simply and easily great fun. No, you ranted about people hating it earlier Yes, well, I like it. It makes games faster. Yavimaya Elder is also extremely useful in this road, and he draws me a card most of the time. Brogenitus likes card draw. Me likey
Bloodbraid Elf is nuts. Absolutely nuts. It allows me to grab anything with cmc 3 or less and cast it. Not much in 3 or less that I'll be unhappy seeing casted at anytime. Cascade is insane. It truly is. Run it and be amazed. Brogenitus like Cascade so much, it was made keyword later in his block.
Akroma, Angel of Wrath is a shiny I've had sitting around for ages. She's cool, I like her. Old-School Giant, costly angels are win.
Edric, Spymaster of Trest and Mulldrifter are important to get me cards. Edric allows other people to draw cards, making me everyone's best friends. That's the idea, then I turn around and Brogenitus well....he's not a bro.
Next comes some removal. I've opted to go with some stalwarts on this front. For creatures, we have Flametongue Kavu. He's Legit. Kinda cool. Burns things. My kinda spicy treat.Winged Coatl is cool. Flash, Flying, and Deathtouch oh my! It's Keyowrdific.
Wrexial, the Risen Deep is not a key component of the deck. He was added for extra shenanigans with other people, to make things crazy. I love crazy. Added bonus due to islandwalk.
Two other tutorable threats include Sphinx of the Steel Wind and Enigma Sphinx the artifact typing is pretty cool. One is an extra Akroma with different protections, and the second has Cascade. I've mentioned earlier that Cascade is bonkers. Accept that it is.
Treva, the Renewer is pretty cool, but fairly weak. I expect to cut it relatively soon. It was the first rare I ever pulled too.
Rounding out the end of this section is some minor recursion. Oh shut up. Brogenitus here. Introducing Kozilek, the Butcher of Truth. He draws cards, he beats things, he annihilates things. He's like the Muhammad Ali of Zendikar. He's a mean sucka. I went toe to toe with him and lost my lands. And Genesis, the guy's practically a god. Seriously. Did I mention one prevents me from retarded losses, and the other one regenerates all my little friends? Including Rafiq. Stupid rafiq.
Enchantment Breakdown
Some of the best cards in this deck are enchantments. Prismatic Omen and Mana Reflection help fix mana, and accelerate the deck. The needs for these two cards are significant. I cannot understate enough how awesome Progenitus is. I'm the bees knees, yo!
One of the most important pieces is Dream Halls. It basically reads "Discard something, Play Brogenitus." I love the land of Dreams because it is the hallway to eating tasty mortals. SHUT IT Progenitus. I'm talking here. Sorry. I'll shut up for a paragraph.
Maelstrom Nexus is the other super important engine. Cascade, as discussed earlier, is bonkers. It's like playing with fire that you get to burn everyone ELSE with. It's hilariously fun. It forces other people into bad countering situations, compromises them, forces hard decisions. It's how you play fun magic, at least for you. I'ma Cascade now.
An added bonus of 5 colors is supporting some of my favorite cards. I enjoy the auras. Bear Umbra is coming, helps create shenanigans but the ability to grab Armadillo Cloak and Eldrazi Conscription will help me deal some damage when Brogenitus isn't out. He has protection from Auras too. Diplomatic Immunity is pretty awesome, mostly because I can go all Lethal Weapon when I play it. BUT I HAD DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY! Curiosity draws me cards. It'll probably be cut soon. Brogenitus isn't curious.
Privileged Position helps protect things. Highly important. The deck features little recursion, and protecting your pieces is important, as well as the built in redundancy. Sterling Grove does this as well, and helps tutor for things like Dream Halls, and is coming very, very soon. In a similar vein, Collective Restraint protects me. 5 is a fun cost to pay. Attack others! Enjoy Edric! slay yourselves. Brogenitus loves scraps....
The removal enchantments include Oblivion Ring and Faith's Fetters. They shut off annoying things fairly well. Like planeswalkers and other people's engines.
Spell Breakdown
The first inclusion was the 'Command' cycle. Powerful effects, I wanted a signature cycle to help personify the idea of the deck. The varied effects give me access to a wide range of solutions to problems. Brogenitus does nto like problems. I hate problems I can't eat.
Demonic Tutor, Idyllic Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, Tooth and Nail, and Conflux all help grab pieces. There's many things that Brogenitus needs at any given time to help him, or his lieutenants succeed. Brogenitus likes next level plays. While there is no "dedicated" TnN package, I liked the availability of options. Conflux allows me to grab 5 cards, and can be used with things like Dream Halls for added fun.
Ancestral Vision and Vision Skeins are group hug like. I can target the Visions, or let people Reverberate and Twincast it allowing for more fun for everyone! Card Draw is super important. Brogenitus needs to get to his pieces quickly and efficiently.
Hypergenesis and Rite of Replication are two "bomb" sorceries. I wanted a few spells that could swing the game while doing awesome things. They're both fun while letting me do hilariously awesome things. I've never been disappointed when either of these show up. They're fun for everyone!
Rounding out the spells we have spot removal and non-targetted reanimation. I'm forced to discard a large beater early game? Lemme bring him back! Some creature absolutely getting on your nerves? Brogenitus hasn't hit the field yet? I charge a high per the turn cost of tasty mortals. StP is your answer when you can't pay Brogenitus his high turnly rate of delicious mortals.
Thread Changelog
6/23/2012: ProBrogenitus spoke. There was a thread. From nothing, something was made. The multiverse quaked, children cried, and Norin had a bad feeling.
