Hello MTGSalvation Users and Duel Commander players!
It’s that time again! I will be hosting the 1st Cockatrice Duel Commander tournament of 2016! Before we get into all of the rules, let’s show off the bling:
WARNING: I'm terrible at photo sizes, this is huge.
That’s right! I’ll be sending the 1st place winner of the Cockatrice tournament this NM Foil 7th EditionUnderground River (not to be confused with Underground SEA ). That’s a unique piece of cardboard, look at that shine! UPDATE: An Anonymous benefactor has kindly donated a $50 Digital Star City Games digital gift card to the prize pool. First place will now take home the prize of their choice, and 2nd place will get the other prize. Thank you very much for the donation!
At any rate, let’s move on to some rules for playing in this tournament!
Let’s start with the banlist:
Back to Basics
Library of Alexandria
Oath of Druids
Sensei’s Divining Top
The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
Conspiracy-typed cards (not cards from the set, the literal Conspiracies themselves) are banned.
Ante cards are also banned.
The following cards are also banned from being played as a commanders:
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician
Edric, Spymaster of Trest
Erayo, Soratami Ascendant
Oloro, Ageless Ascetic
Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary
Zur the Enchanter
All normal Duel Commander rules apply:
-Except for cards in the banlist, Duel Commander is an Eternal format. Cards from every set in Magic’s (black or white bordered, sorry UnSets!) history are legal.
-99 card library, entirely singleton except for Basic Lands.
-1 Commander Card. This card starts in your Command Zone and can be cast at any time that the card could legally be cast.
-30 life, 21 combat damage from a single Commander is considered lethal.
-Vancouver (aka ‘regular’ Magic) mulligan.
-Each time you cast your Commander from your Command Zone, they cost (2) more mana to cast for each time that they have been cast from the Command Zone.
-If a Commander is placed into graveyard, library, exile or hand, they may instead be placed into the Command Zone as a replacement effect. (NOTE: A card must go to graveyard for it to have considered to ‘die.’ If you have an effect that matters when your Commander dies, they must go to your graveyard instead of Command Zone for the ability to happen.
-To determine who goes first, roll a die. The winner gets to choose to be on the play or draw. The player who goes first does not draw a card on their first turn.
-Matches are played on a best-of-3 games basis. Please report scores as such. (Example: Player A 2-1 over Player B)
Cockatrice Rules and Tournament Rules:
-You must register your deck Hash (which can be found in the deck editor, it’s a small section above the ‘maindeck’ line) with me and on the thread. Unless someone will correct me, the deck Hash cannot change with the decklist, which means I will NOT need your actual decklist in the normal Swiss rounds.
-You cannot change your deck during the duration of the tournament. You may change your decklist all you would like before the tournament, but once the official tournament starts, you are locked into using the deck hash posted in the thread and PM’d to me. Changes after that time will not be accepted.
-The tournament will be run as a Swiss Event. We will cut to Top 8 after enough rounds have been played.
-Top 8 will be required to submit decklists and deck hashes before the Top 8 begins in a PM to me. These lists will be made public to all Top 8 contestants during the event before their matches and then to the public once it has been concluded.
-Tournament games will take place at any time each week. It is up to you and your opponent to find a time to play your match. Users who are online but not able to make their matches will be given a tie. If a user tries to contact their opponent but receives no answer, the user to make contact with me will be given a win, and their opponent who never responded will be dropped from the event
Miscellaneous Rules STILL IMPORTANT, READ THEM:
-When creating a game in Cockatrice, make sure that it is clearly labeled as such and is under the format ‘EDH/Commander.’ Do NOT allow hands to be shown to spectators, but do allow spectators to view the game and chat. In this way, any replays can be saved and shown in case of any disputes or rules issues. We do not, however, want players to be given information regarding their opponent’s hands. I implore everyone to not give nor be okay with receiving outside assistance during the match. I obviously cannot stop this from happening with spectators allowed but I would rather have the ability to have witnesses to any illegal play OR rudeness to one’s opponents than deal with someone backseat gaming in a free online tournament.
-Being rude to your opponent will not be tolerated. This tournament is being run for the enjoyment of its players. I have a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding this. You may curse your luck, your deities and forces outside of your control with the force of a thousand fiery suns, but you will under no circumstances direct this at your opponent. Anyone caught breaking this rule during the tournament will be automatically disqualified. Obviously, some situations are up for debate but I’d like to think that we’re all adults here. There’s a difference between ‘man, what a F***ing lucky draw on your end,’ and ‘**** you, you are a ****ing ******!’
-This isn’t a rule so much as a suggestion, but do try to save the replays from your match. In case there are any rules disputes or instances of a player being rude they can be reviewed before a decision is made.
Yeah knowing how long these can take, the new banlist and set will pop up right after the start of the tournament, which might be troublesome.
Othewise, count me in!
To address this, I will say that I am very anxious to get started and do not want to wait. We'll say that regardless of any changes to the banlist, this tournament will continue to use the same decklists for its duration. Plus, the earlier we start the earlier I can get the next one going as well
Alright everyone, a quick announcement and a few notes.
1) I'll be moving the tournament back a week to compensate for the Duel Commander Banlist update on January 18th. Additionally, moving it forward means we'll be able to play with the OGW cards as they'll all be spoiled and (hopefully) up on Cockatrice by then. The new start date will be January 21st!
2)Remember, I don't necessarily needs your deck's Commander, I just need your deck hash from Cockatrice. Feel free to not give out any information to your opponents prior to the start of the event

You sonuva... WHY AREN'T YOU LIVING THE SELVALA DREAM!?
Alright, I have everyone currently in the thread updated. That said, there are too many faces I already know listed here C'mon, where's my Dark Horse players? Come out of the woodwork and beat us up (in Magic)! Even if you haven't used Cockatrice before, the best way to learn is to play! Haven't played Duel Commander before? There's no cost to you except your willingness to play a match sometime during the week. I'd love to see many newer players sign up to battle it out!
Additionally, I'd like to just remind everyone to keep their deck hash in their initial sign up post. No need to clog the thread with additional posts if you update your deck hash before the event starts. I will be checking all of them the day of the tournament starts and they will be locked in after that time.
Deck: ??? after the banlist changes
btw,how long will the tournament take? i can't spend over 5 hours...
Each round will take place at any time during the week. You will contact your opponent and schedule a time to play your match. It is impossible to set a specific time for a tournament with all of the timezones online. The actual tournament will play out over several weeks, but you will work with your opponent schedule a match during that time each week.
Alright folks, we're up to 31 players with about a week and a half until the event starts! That's great! Just a few quick announcements:
1) Make sure to include your deck hash in your original post! I will be going through the day of the tournament start and I will have to remove anyone who has not updated their post with the deck hash. As an aside, I would also make sure to back up your exact decklist somewhere either online or write it down - if you have issues with Cockatrice, you can always completely reinstall and re-enter the decklist. The hash will remain the same.
2) A very awesome Anonymous benefactor has offered to donate a $50 Digital Star City Games Gift Card to the prize pool! The first place winner will get their choice between that and the Foil Underground River and the other prize will go to the second place winner.
