I've encountered a new variant in Cockatrice utilized by a player named Hotcho. It's a very interesting version, the list is the same as any other combo version but I got his permission to see your reaction.
So far, he removed Garruk, Caller of Beasts for Elvish Mystic (pointed out that he's missing 1 of the 6 essential manadork) and having Imperial Recruiter is not needed despite it give a lot of CA. From a spectator's pov, it acts like a regular Marath minus some key cards. According to him, Linvala stopped his deck... but having those mooncards stopped his Marath which is like 50/50 chance of screwing the other. On the other hand, it still sucks against Iname in a race.
To me, it feels like a Imperial Animar... except for the obvious difference.
Apparently not... yet. I've self-tested it and it's pretty efficient. I added Recruiter and it's feels complete since it can do a lot of things to make the combo faster. Bit hard to decide what other cards to remove.
That's why I showed you guys this version, I've seen it action and it's doing okay online. Self test (actual field test in few days), I haven't found the problem EXCEPT drawing lands. I want use this deck and point out the problems OTHER than being on paper since it works well for HotCho to use him against the common decks on Cockatrice. It still has the usual problem. According to HotCho, he has problems of drawing lands and haven't got problems just yet.
For Ivy Lane, it's your call. Nest is iffy on my list though, but it's nice to see a variant with the token combo.
Blood and Magus- are there for mirror match since that's one of the common weaknesses with regular Marath. I guess, he utilized that weakness which is completely understandable on him adding them. Since that deck has more basics than regular version, it fun to use those Moon cards without repercussions.
Land Tax- I've watched it on early, mid and late (although the latter sucks as expected) but it does compensate for having less lands in the deck. Remember, his deck has more basics.
Council- Don't dissed it. It's there... I've used it and so does Lyserg which gives out a lot of removal that we need.
Fiery- it's there for mirror match and against annoying weenies.
Bloodbraid Elf- Eh on that. Some Marath players have it or not. It's nice to see him utilizing free digs.
Elder- agree on that and removed him in my version. Although his reasoning for using that Groot is Pod use.
Path- I told him WHY he doesn't play it. It's good to nab that missing basic for Earthcraft or removing some annoying threats.
So this enchantment, plus Marath means some interesting plays. Marath can target himself (yes 'Target creature') meaning that at the end of turns you can really pump your marath up or spread counters over to fliers. Also, its dirt cheap so think of this as another mana dork basically. Looking good 8)

It would work but I would have a dork there. Potential is high but for playability in a long run, bit low.
Courser of Kruphix has been on my watch/cut list for awhile. I really like the card, but it competes with when you want to cast Marath normally. Plus the card advantage is varied. Unlike Oracle who can literally run through your entire deck if you get lucky with shuffles. Along with the old cuts of the Angel lifegain combos, Courser isn't as strong to me recently.

For me, it's an eh not too good nor bad. On the brightside, since the regular Marath has 40% land and runs along with Oracle, thinning the top deck is essential.

OH, Marath can target himself! So this card usualy reads: 1: put +1/+1 counter on Marath, it can be pretty big deal! Imagine turn 2 Marath, turn 3 that enchnament, so Marath can be 6/6 at the end of turn, then 11/11 on turn 4. And little bonus for Ajani´s ability and Gavony Township or Devoted Druid as wel...
Let's see what other cards they can offer. The new enchantment is nice but it really need a lot testing when it's available. It's really good on the -38 land deck so far lol
To me, it needs more filter with Council since I've messed up Geist's Godhead. On the other hand, Ajani still an annoying powerhouse with my games but I've discarded Garruk Caller in my regular Marath since I've playtested the 33 land version without Garruk.
Some Marath players started testing HS on trice' and they're still not sure what to say about that card. On paper yes... on the field, meh, not so much.
What you guys think about cut the ajani, and garruk 6 manas for ooze and aven mindcesor?
07/09 i played a tourney here in brazil with 57 people.
r1 win against zegana 2-0
r2 draw with the rafiq that win the champ, i have kiki-jiki- and imperial recruiter in the table but can only combo in the next turn but the 5 turns end in her turn. 1-1
r3 draw against zegana 1-1
r4 win against prosh 2-0
r5 win against meriek reaniamtor (the same list as the oloro reanimator of BOM 2, but without oloro) 2-0 (zealous steal the griselbrand ftw xD)
r6 lost to maelstrom- g1 i lost to greed cause i have gaddock in play after tutor him with chord, and marath too, but in the next turn i become full tapped to play a purphoros and the last card in mael hand is a mystical tutor that searched for anger of the gods.g2 i mull to 5 on the play, search the gaddock but again he have the anger, in this las round i need 1 more mana to win with survival, karmic, kiki and bell ringer but didn't draw the mana :|
Finished 3-1-2 in 17° place, the prize is for top 16.
This is the most strange top 8 i ever seen in the 4 camps that we have here in São Paulo, but i have been motivated that we will have a edh french list national here in Brazil soon
I really tough you did better last sunday, Tutu, after you ran over the Zegana round 1.
Played on the same tourney as Tutu, went 3-1-2 as well but gave the win to the guy I tied with b/c I wanted to go home, had a headache. My losses were a 2-0 to a Animar that managed to combo turn 4 on game 1 and got mana screwed turn 2; and 2-1 to the Jeleva player, he Armageddon'd me turn 3 game 1 and next game I was going to combo him out on turn 5 but he killed me a turn earlier.
If survival were ever to be banned I would straight up change commander.
Yisan requires a few turns until you can combo off and 9 mana on the turn you go off, Pod requires a couple of turns and creatures, and recruiter is slow and expensive to combo on a single turn. Survival requires that you have a creature in your hand and 3 green mana on their end step, and can fetch you the answer whe need right then and there.
Losing our best enabler and the best tutor we have on this deck that's filled with useful answers would be a very big blow to the entire deck. But it is indeed only one of 99.
Well without Survival, Marath can survive without it because we mostly don't draw it from time to time (especially someone denied us casting hint hint). We still have other options.
This weekened, if time permits, I can actually test some of the new cards in actual game! Hardended Scale is the first to test it.
Without turn-1 mana dorks Marath also can survive. Sometimes we don't get them, sometimes they eat a bolt. The real question is if the deck's core would be shaken without it.
A combo-oriented build usually use the white tutor to fetch survival, and if they counter it we then witness it back up. If survival is our fastest way to win, which it is, then it's the decks main plan. If we were to lose it Marath would still be a strong deck, but not a fast combo one.
What I said about ditching the deck is that losing survival means we can no longer win turn 4-5 effortless, which makes other decks that usually can't compete stronger by comparison.
