cradle has a very real risk to playing it. you have to overextend in order for it to have value, and after a wrath your left with a land which doesnt produce mana. toxic deluge plus other wraths make the card beatable, and in somesituations make you lose the game.

If crucible were to be unbanned, Fastbond would have to be banned instead. Its one or the other, because with both, a single fetch gets your lands out your decks for however much life you have.
The biggest problem with NO when it was legal was that T3 NOs -> Primeval basically won you the game on the spot because you either fetch Wasteland/Tech Edge/Rishadan's Port and lock you opponent out for the next turn. Then, your opponent MUST immediately response to it or risk losing tempo and falling too far behind to recover.
So, how are we banning things when there are hardly any tournaments on which we can base our findings? Am I missing a good site that is posting regular tournament results? Because they seem sparse on, say, mtgtop8.com.
Anyway, I agree with the bannings this time around, although I think the Esper color combination is more of a problem than Oloro. We will see in time, I suppose. I am just afraid a new top general will surface, and then get banned, and that this cycle will continue ad infinitum, making the format unsafe to play, and unwelcoming to new investors. Seems to be the cycle lately. Though, with Oloro gone, Aggro gets better, so Geist gets worse, or at least different, so he is likely safe for awhile. Wanderer is probably fine since he is always a crapshoot. Marath and other generals that get better as you kill them are bad for the format though. Prossh is only ok because of his initial cost. I predict Marath being a problem though, especially since he gets much better without Oloro. Wonder if anyone will try a new Esper guy out just to keep the colors alive...
I think 2 players went home before the tourney started because it was getting late. And those two I think are playing Marath and Geist.
Top 4:
2 Doran
1 Wanderer
1 Jenara
I always Crucible was banned soley due to the ease of getting an early Wasteland lock going. Though, with it banned, I don't see much of point in having Strip Mine banned.
I would think that strip mine is banned because wasteland can be played around where as strip mine cannot. However maybe it could be safely unbanned. More games would end due to a lucky wasteland into strip mine hand. But maybe not with the frequency one would assume?
What are others thoughts on this?

I finished second, piloting Jester's Imperial Animar with some minor changes, other Animar in top 8 was also Jester's combo version. Winning deck was a sweet brew with some combos. I think we've had quite diverse and somewhat surprising metagame (I expected a lot more Wanderers). Decklists on mtgtop8 should follow.
As a combo EDH, Animar is too stable. Since Oloro has been banned no deck can put enough board wipe to stop Animar.
I think we should ban Animar as well.
Seems like this weekend was a great time to be playing Duel Commander Thanks for the reports everyone, seeing the varying metagames and commander use is really neat.
An interesting trend - in three different locations around the world, only 2 people played Geist of Saint Traft?!
There were 2 Geist players if I remembered correctly, last Sunday in Manila. The meta was very diverse, where some non-blue decks made some appearances. Namely: Tajic, Olivia, Kaalia, and that Krenko deck was madness! I think some Oloro players boycotted the tournament, as I didn't see 3 of them last weekend. And I also noticed that the one person who was previously playing Oloro, just switched the commander for Sen Triplets, but kept the same reanimator 99-card deck along with the new general.

Yeah, a player at our tournament did the same thing. Seemed less broken in general as players were able to wear them down well enough. I didn't have a chance to play against or spend a long time spectating his matches, though.

What would you all think if WotC took over duel commander? Would it have a net positive or negative impact on the format? I could see it being positive as it would probably bring a lot more popularity to the US. I suspect the banlist would grow a bit. Has this been discussed before?

WOTC would have to take over multiplayer Commander's banlist first. They have already made it quite clear they have no interest in maintaining it - they left it in the care of the Rules Committee for Multiplayer.
I think that the Duel Commander RC has done a fine job so far, so why change it?
