SCD: We haven't actually talked about this card, right? Probably not good enough on it's own but the cost reduction is saucy. Making Kaalia cost 1R is pretty grand tbh.
That card came up after some friends challenged me to build Kaalia with only multi-colour cards (artifacts being a gray area of necessity and violating the idea of the approach) and I came across this guy in my search and it did make me think. We probably don't have enough clerics for it (two, the other one is Grand Abolisher for W although Mom and the new Kor Mom would both be free). I recognize it doesn't speed up the clock to lay Kaalia down, but the ability to drop her for 1R and still have mana up for a LD effect, removal, disruption, tutour...or just play a set of fancy footwear on the same turn is strong.
but the problem is that it costs 3CMC.
Which means Kaalia will be coming in at Turn 4 (maybe with haste if we have Greave or Dragon Tempest) - This is something we achieve already with consistency by dropping a Turn 2 Rock ---> Turn 3 haste enabler.
So the only reason we would run this is if we are somehow looking to be even more consistent with a Turn 4 Kaalia with haste.
Btw the Kor Mother of Runes sadly does not protect herself, which also imo just slightly does not make the cut
I knew I forgot something. I was writing so long and excited I finally figured out the WGD route it just slipped my mind!
I updated to shout you out as well, and my thoughts on the stax route as it relates to Kaalia. Sorry I overlooked that.
I am well pleased with the shout out. I too recognize that Stax isn't everyone's cup of tea nor is having a super streamlined list, but it's proven the most effective strategy for a cEDH/High-Power playgroup.
In regards to Edgewalker, I like that ire reduces the colored mana costs of Kaalia. It makes me wonder if there is a strong Cleric package that we could run alongside Kaalia that would make the 'Walker get full value in the decklist.
Omg it's happening, it's finally happening! I yelled for it for years, always falling on deaf ears. But in a decade of yelling, we're finally getting them. *sniff*
White Beast Within and enemy-colored Talismans are crazy hype!
Have you considered Leonin Relic-Warder for the "Razakats" combo in your multiplayer list? I mentioned it in /u/benjameenbear 's primer but here's the relevant excerpt for convenience (original credits to Bad_Dog from the cEDH subreddit):
Requires 1 creature (Kaalia) and 1WWB (this can be shortcut by 1 if you have two lands and a rock in play).
Cheat in Razaketh off Kaalia. Sacrifice Kaalia or another creature (-2 life). Tutor Leonin Relic-Warder. Cast Leonin Relic-Warder (WW). If you have a mana rock in play, exile it. Otherwise, target something you don't like. Sacrifice the Relic Warder (-2 life). This will either bring your rock back untapped or, if done in response to the ETB trigger, permanently exile the problem card. Tutor Animate Dead. Cast Animate Dead targeting Leonin Relic-Warder (1B). Leonin Relic-Warder enters the battlefield. Target Animate Dead. Animate Dead is exiled, sacrifice trigger goes on stack. Sacrifice the Relic-Warder to return Animate Dead, creating a loop where you can repeatedly tutor for -2 life. Tutor up one of your combos and enough fast mana needed to cast it (-2 life per activation).
In your case you could grab a couple fast mana pieces, Entomb, and Necromancy for WGD combo win; if you have B open then all you need is Entomb with the Relic-Warder trigger on the stack. The main cost would be finding a spot for Leonin Relic-Warder, which I think is a reasonable if unexciting card outside of the combo. Seems like it would be a great fit given that you've already included WGD combo, being able to win from Kaalia + Razaketh with 4 open mana and no cards in hand is pretty powerful!
Hmm. I think, if I have Razaketh, I can already find my combo itself so the cat isn't really enabling anything my deck can't already do. I don't really need infinite tutours this way since my win-cons are already so compact and I play the whole dearth of hard tutours anyway. Although I do certainly appreciate the ingenuity of the interaction itself.
In regards to Edgewalker, I like that ire reduces the colored mana costs of Kaalia. It makes me wonder if there is a strong Cleric package that we could run alongside Kaalia that would make the 'Walker get full value in the decklist.

...some friends challenged me to build Kaalia with only multi-colour cards (artifacts being a gray area of necessity and violating the idea of the approach)
As the challenge connoisseur that I am, I went ahead and took the first stab at this deck. Kaalia: Oops, All Gold if you wanted to take a look. My initial assessments being it loses a step without our dearth of tutours but it does get to utilize more of the typically stronger multiplayer cards. And, I've even got a few sweet uses for Feather, the Redeemed going on here! Could be a fun deck to break out when you want to play this but don't want to play all in (hilarious that MoC and Sire are still a thing).
It's of note from this project that I discovered Righteous War too, which I believe has implications to replace the seven year running Earnest Fellowship. That's a pretty significant change.
So let's draw out the pros and cons of Earnest Fellowship, an absolute corre card for the past seven years, and the older Righteous War
Cons
- Three mana instead of two.
- Takes two colours to cast.
- Kaalia doesn't get protection from 60% of the colour pie (no prot. R makes her vulnerable to pyroclasms again).
- Less effective with mono-colour creatures.
- Doesm't do anything for our dragons and anything else that's mono-R (although we can go back to playing Mother of Runes/Giver of Runes as they're not as hindered as they were vs Fellowship).
Pros
- Not symmetrical. We don't have to worry about giving opponent's commanders lots of protection too (looking at you, Animar.)
- We no longer have to play just mono-coloured removal to minimize the chance of our enchantment blocking our own spells.
- Giving Kaalia prot W&B is still the most important defenses since the majority of hard removal is W and/or B.
So the biggest note against it is lack of natural prot. R, but the biggest gains are both not being symmetrical, and being able to play powerful multi-colour removal with impunity once again. Idk if it's confirmation bias on my end, but I believe we have a much stronger case for Righteous War to replace Earnest Fellowship.
In regards to Edgewalker, I like that ire reduces the colored mana costs of Kaalia. It makes me wonder if there is a strong Cleric package that we could run alongside Kaalia that would make the 'Walker get full value in the decklist.

Its true, it doesn't, but for what it does offer, I think wanting t2 Kaalia on top of that is a bit greedy, imho. I know I for one would really dig the applications with Alms Collector, even without the discount.
And on my end, making a three drop Rector is incredibly relevant - Moat, Contract, Stranglehold, Sneak Attack if you wanted...that's some prime real estate. Havoc Festival if you want to go head on like me, and then Debtors Knell if you wanted to go late.
We play snow lands. Why not play this guy to freeze permanents down? You can even swing into what would otherwise be a block by freezing said would-be blocker by retaining priority after this Kaalia trigger but before moving on to declare blockers.
I think the support needed is low (just one snow land and we run three) with the ceiling being pretty good.
I'll be testing the mana base and deck with the snow upgrades as I leave for vacation this week. This looks and feels...different. but, I think in a good way. Some interesting ideas I'm going out on a limb here for, to keep you interested;
-1 dismember, +1 generous gift
-1 lightning bolt, +1 skred
-1 mox diamond, +1 arcum's astrolabe
-1 defiler of souls, +1 rimescale dragon
-1 fellwar stone & chrome mox, +1 2 talismans
-1 REB/pyroblast, +1 on thin ice/gelid shackles (my friends I'll be seeing don't necessitate enough of a blue base to justify these)
-1 3 fastlands, +1 2 canopy lands & mouth of ronom.
-1 shadowborn demon, +1 adarkar valkyrie
-1 canyon slough, +1 tresserhorn sinks
Coldsteel Heart still couldn't make the cut but you know the talismans are in. I'd like to give Corrupted Grafstone another run because I think it's better than it appears.
I'd like to believe Smiting Helix is good but can't find a spot for a four cmc sorcery helix. Someone change my mind or concur with my assessment.
I'll also be testing Crucible of Worlds again with the added canopies and mouth to complement my fetchlands and enable strip lock. It might still be too slow, but there is an exponentially higher amount of intrinsic value now.
Suspecting Idyllic Tutour might be a cut. It's slow and for the same cmc as Grim, is far more limited. Though with the addition of snow enchant removals, it's stock may have risen and I'll need to re-evaluate.
So, as you can see I've gone ...ALL IN... on the snow idea, sans Dead of Winter which I think is suspect.
But why is it tacked on an etb trigger... but as long as we run 22+ ADDs, we should be able to get one into hand.
EDITE: If it was an activated ability
WBR: Look at top six...
I would be super excited
I think it's a bit more in the fair realm since we have to pay costs still, but there might be something here. I'm thinking, something midrange disruptive like the old Doran decks, with creatures like Resto angel and herald of torment. Kaalia refills our hand and we maximize our threat count with every card being must answer.
Yes! I was also thinking of putting Restoration Angel back in.
We can use it to re-use the new Kaalia's ETB trigger as well as Rune-Scarred Demon (Realizing now that I don't run many Demons and Dragons with ETB abilities)
My current Creature suite is as follows (for multiplayer)
Found this thread on google and decided to join. I was going to ask the author if they were alive and looking at the new Kaalia. Both of which have been thankfully answered when I saw this super long thread of 171 pages. Beutiful.
I'm new to magic and got into it because of MTG: Arena and found Kaalia when I got whooped in a Commander game by a more experienced player, *****ing to a friend in my D&D group, and then being told 'play this if you want people to hate you'. I only wanted hate from that one guy but not a whole group and then decided: I suck anyways so even if I pick this card it'll still be even
And so after so much rummaging I found the (Holy/Unholy?) place for Kaalia advice. Thank you to 3drinks and everyone who's participated and allowed for a new player to find a place in the MTG Community.

All things said I like the new Kaalia but I feel that in standard we'll need Green Mana to ramp up and in commander I just can't see popping up my card count without getting the mana in place to actually cast things. Unless there's some cards in the plast that have a 'if you reveal a card you can play it' or something I don't think Kaalia Zenith Seeker will all too good.
That said what about picking up both and putting them in the same deck? OG Kaalia as Commander to play cards with New Kaalia to pick up cars. At 7 mana it's hella expensive but the synerguy is there.
P.S I don't know how to use the color thing on the forum. Tried putting green and it game a ton of other symbols in the brackets.
However as others have mentioned the Angel/Demon/Dragon count needed is quite high and paying mana for each one is a steep cost. There's a serious question as to whether any deck running baby Kaalia as commander would just be better off with OG Kaalia at the helm. Overall I don't think she will be a better than OG Kaalia but at least offers a potential change of pace.

Ahem.
I just don't see the new Kaalia fitting here, I think what she wants to do and what we're actually doing is too far apart when we could similarly replicate her effect in this deck with painful truths and ancient craving. However FWIW, I'm feeling her and I'm surely going to be writing a primer and covering her in depth too because her synergies are real good (scroll rack, making us into a sort of miracle deck), and caring a bit more about etb than on-damage triggers and not needing to worry about Flameblast Syndrome.
Obviously that's still some time away, so all I can really say to you is stay tuned.
But the new Kaalia's power level is pretty low compared to our current Kaalia.
Imo the gap is quite big.
Do you think its worth slotting new kaalia into our 99 as a way to find our ADDs? theoretically we should always put 1 into hand.
And in our colors, card selection is not often found

I do think the gap is large, but I think you can build around it and close the gap with a lot of virtual CA (my deck building niche, heh). As to why I wouldn't play her in this deck, its because we're looking for a specific card more often than not which is why we have so many Universal tutours. Just fishing for random value drops isn't so in-line with what we're doing here.

Kinda thinking about it but prob not. After last post I got thinking and I wondered if you could get both on hand the field quicky if that would mean faster monster draw and it dosen't. They simply can't play off each other even though there the same card doing something very similar. You also run into a not having enough mana issue.

Hmm, there are some good cards in that list. I certainly think it's worth exploring. I particularly like the Remorseful Cleric, the Sanctum Prelate, Doomed Necromancer, Leonin Relic-Warder, Glowrider, Ethersworn Canonist, and Alms Collector. That's a really decent pile of Clerics right there, so perhaps [CARD}Edgewalker[/CARD] does have some applications for Kaalia.
The only thing that I don't like about it is that it costs 3 CMC. The 'Walker doesn't directly power out a T3 Kaalia like I want it to, sadly.
