For the past few months, I've been trying on and off improving my deck. After a while, I've decided to show you my current build as well as my old version.
So far, I'm planning to play this deck this month's EDH Sunday and hopefully it'll do better than last time. My old design [see below] consists of lackluster (in addition to my opponent's getting the upperhand over me) play, I have to overhaul everything. Removing the unplayable cards and making sure that they're consistent to my design.
This version is for focusing on 1v1 competitive matches as well adding some cards for multiplayer scenarios. I need help with this design.
Do note that this version is based on the EDH.net's list. In addition, the store forbids any infinite shenanigans or else that's an immediate removal from the table until further notice. The only infinite combo that I know is regarding to Niv-Mizzet (Curiosity, Mind Over Matter and even Ophidian Eye). I'm not fully aware the other infinite combos out there and I have check every variation of this deck.
Thanks
Why Thrax?
If you like Thrax because:
- BR Get's bigger
- R He has haste.
- U Controls the field
- BU Forcing your opponent to close their creatures just to be bigger and as a payment
- B he is a Cruel Edict with legs whenever declaring this as an attacker. Maze of Ith will stop Thrax but the opponent will still have to sacrifice their creature.
Who wouldn't like zombie assassin? He's a built-in haste and control that forces your opponent to make him bigger. In addition, his color combination is what makes him lethal: Red already has sadism and control, Black has destruction and control, and Blue has power and sadism. Despite that "Grixis" color lacks Green and White, they make up with their own unique color combination. So he's a Zombie Assassin who's fast and your opponent has to mandatory sacrifice their monster just to make him bigger!
As a player, I wanted to use a conflicting color :symu::symb::symr: I want something that have control, card advantages and even ramping. Unfortunately, some of the cards goes to and W which is not within my color range. I concluded that I should focus on Blue. To be more specific, Artifacts. With those arsenal available, I can gain enough advantage for :symu::symb::symr: and completely ignoring my color's weaknesses.
Strengths
As long as you get the upperhand, you'll do nicely. Massive removals for hand, field, and graveyard are there for your convenience. If they have at least 1 creature, you can simply run them over for an additional +1/+1 counters using your general
In addition, early turn ramp such as Sol Ring and Signets gives you the edge in either multiplayer and 1v1. I'm pretty much surprised that it could be fast which entire depends on your opening hand
Weaknesses
Since White and Green are their antithesis, the main concern is the early drop removal that destroys and of my resources. In addition, control is the primary concern if you run out of bullets. 0 hand is also the major concern if someone actually played a board sweeper. Hence, I need some draw cards to get back on my feet.
Card Rosters

Explanations Coming Soon:
Creatures
Aeon Chronicler : Iffy on the card advantage. He's good for drawing as well as getting something big. A pick in my mid build.
Chainer, Dementia Master : He's good for a deck with sport removals. Urborg's best friend when it comes to 2+ colored decks.
Duplicant : He's an A-lister removal. Splashable and a major annoyance to any deck.
Greater Gargadon : Big muscles and autoinclude if your opponent has spot/sweeping removals in your area.
Jaya Ballard, Task Mage : Blue's bane of existence via 1st ability. Somewhat slow and she's a powerhouse if you have something that protect from itself from her third ability.
Memnarch : If you're using an artifact-themed like I did when I 1st started building Thrax. He's your guy. I played with him until I realized that I don't have that much recursion like Sharuum
Myojin of Night's Reach : Auto-include in my case. He removes hands which devastate your opponent. I love this guy.
Shriekmaw : Terror with feat. If you have something to revive him, be my guess.
Venser, Shaper Savant : A more expensive Remand, otherwise, he can definitely bounce ANYTHING on the field and stack.
Anathemancer: He's awesome during Lorwyn Standards. If you think carefully, most "competitive" EDH decks have the almost 70-89% of their lands consists of nonbasic lands. To be more precise, dual lands, fetch lands, shard lands and etc. Despite that it's not a lot when it comes to dealing damage, but you're slowly crippling your opponent. Take that $60 Bayou! Take that $11 Temple Garden!!
Anarchist/ Scrivener/ Izzet Chronarch: They're good, they're 2/2 but they cost 5! What do they have in common? They bring back a spell, Sorcery, Instant or even both. They're worth it if you're heavy with those types and with any color.
Nucklavee: Like Anarchist, Scrivener, and even Izzet Chronarch, this one costs 1 more. But with a body 4/4, it's a decent stat to hold on its own. The good side is that it can both bring back both Spells and Instant. The bad side that it has to be a Red Sorcery AND/OR Blue Instant. Multicolored loved this card. However, if you're using Diabolic Edict, Glimpse the Unthinkable, Bribery, Terminate or Wrecking Ball, you're out of luck.
Anger: Unlike Genesis, he needs to be on the graveyard ASAP. If you can't then don't bother. I used him early on but having to force him on the graveyard with Buried Alive or Corpse Connoisseur isn't worth at all.
Arcanis the Omnipotent: A really solid card, makes you draw but he's also slow. I would put him on low tier pick.
Avatar of Woe: Big and expensive. Great removal. In addition, it's cheap enough for BB when you kill enough during our match. Remember it counts EVERY graveyard available.
Bane of the Living: Cheapman's Mutilate. Morph gives him the edge. If your opponent doesn't know what's underneath, then you can clear the board with it. Protection is nothing when it comes to this guy.
Clone: Clone is a utility card. It copies everything right down to that scratch of that card's corner. You can use it to kill the general or use something that gains the etb effect. I would definitely use this guy. Protection means nothing coming from this guy.
Body Double: Clone that hits graveyard. There are so many possible ways to use this guy.
Bogardan Hellkite: Expensive beatstick. If you have enough mana to cast it. I love it but this isn't the place for this card
Dread: I love this card. It's big and whenever something hits you, they die. However, in a competitive scene, I can't seem to make it work. It work on paper but it doesn't do that much.
Twisted Abomination: I used to think that this card is looking for basic Swamp. You can searched it with any dual swamp lands.
Spellbound Dragon: My friend is using this card. However, I'm not convinced this being effective.
Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir: Control mage is awesome. However, I couldn't find any space for him.
Vedalken Æthermage: If you're Wizard heavy deck like mine, you can count on him.
Ingot Chewer: Depends entirely if your opponent is artifact heavy. With heavy recursor like Makeshift Mannequin or even Chainer, you can messed up your opponent.
Kederekt Leviathan: I like this card because it removes anything that's in play. Especially if your opponent has Pro-something
Expedition Map : I'm not entirely sure how useful it is. Not until I've see it in action. Wow! I could search ANY land on my deck. Artifacts love Tolarian Academy and Academy Ruins, Mutilate love Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, and etc! There's so much possibilities to grab from your deck. Definitely a pick
Armillary Sphere: Since I don't have G, it's the next best thing actually. You can thinned out your deck even for just a bit. I'm using that in any of my EDH deck.
Izzet Signet: Just a colored mana. Nothing else is special other than giving you more access to the color that you need.
Rakdos Signet: Just a colored mana. Nothing else is special other than giving you more access to the color that you need.
Orzhov Signet: Just a colored mana. Nothing else is special other than giving you more access to the color that you need.
Mana Vault: turn 1 for 3. Definitely a pick in some decks.
Depends on my mood. I have the choice of adding those cards to a match where combo oriented is abundant. Since I've played players who likes to kill fast, I might as well join the party.
I suggest a fair amount of spot removal, mayby some bounce. You can abuse thrax's ability by making your opponent sac a creature by making it the only legal target.
If this is the 1v1 forum, how do you plan on getting ahead of Vendillion Clique and Rofellos? I see no ways to deal with them under 4 mana, at instant speed. That is going to be problem i think. Also, by "no infinite" is it like... no palinchron + mana flare or, no timestretch + anarchist + some way to bounce, or more like, Grim Monolith power artifact + oona? Cause like, 10 card card combos are not exactly easy. I dunno seems kinda dumb.
I'm trying to figure it out. So far, I've found out that Hex is really a bad top deck to draw when your opponent (Doran, the Siege Tower General) manages to mana ramp me fast. If I can't beat his deck, then that means I'll be having problems with other decks that has some of its utilities.
Why do you run so many creatures? Thraximundar is really the only creature you need, in my thrax build I almost always win by general damage and the few creatures I do run are all utility. I would suggest more spot removal to handle the really fast generals.
After consideration, I have to agree that I have to change my rosters around. However, I still like having 15+ creatures because of the fact my opponent and I reached the part where we almost ran out of cards. I'll have to work things around and adding some Instant removals.
I like my current deck right now and you can see on the 1st post as well.
I'm going to complete the roster cards report asap.
Report:
Yesterday was EDH Sunday. I've updated the list and I beat everyone in pods of 3 people and later on went 1v1 with the winner of the other pod. So yeah, I'm pretty much satisfied when I use Tectonic Edge (not Dust Bowl) to take down his Maze of Ith. My opponent eventually scooped especially when I cast Bribery on two separate people with Emrakul, the Aeons Torns from their decks.
So pretty much this deck can hold 1v1 and multiplayer!
Current Report: I'm having problems with dealing with Enchantments... technically any decks that has access to Survival of the Fittest combo. Despite tutoring like crazy/drawing (Vampiric Tutor, Intuition, Yawgmoth's Will and even Ill-Gotten Gains for suggestions will have to wait for the time being), I'm always on the loosing edge.
Pithing Needle will shut off Survival of the Fittest, at least unless they tutor up a creature like Acidic Slime in response.
The vast majority of Survival abuse is also graveyard abuse as well. Getting Squee, then Genesis, Eternal Witness, Reveillark etc. etc. Graveyard hate is excellent for keeping a Survival player honest and from generating such massive amounts of card advantage, or by just comboing off. Since most players I've seen who use Survival like to dump all their eggs into one basket with it, one well-timed piece of graveyard hate will leave them high and dry.
I see you're already playing Bojuka Bog, but I think you could play something like Shred Memory for additional graveyard hate, and at instant speed to boot. When it's a dead card, just transmute it and immediately replace it with something relevant.
Also consider preemptive removal. Bitter Ordeal has decent synergy with Thraximundar and sweepers in general, and there's also Sadistic Sacrament if you're willing to cough up triple black.
I'm considering Sadistic Sacrament for that annoyance. However, kudos for mentioning Pithing Needle. I didn't realized that it'll work like a charm and it's within Tinkering's range.
However, after seeing through my list, I'm considering this additional cards:
Here's my current built so far. I haven't tested them just yet because I've been preoccupied with other activities, my only complain is that
a) Removal went down
b) Land count went high.
c) Tutors went high
d) Draw cards went down
Been tweaking for the past few days since last week when I lost to a decent RGW Mayael the Anima. And I feel that it's almost at its another level of completion. In addition, I added the "infinite combo" just because the place that I've played are pretty an all out slugfest. If I played at my regular store, I'll simply replace the cards with Izzet Chronarch, Avatar of Woe and etc.
Ver6.0 is a bust. I've used that version against my old friend who used Garza who we have an even match. So far, I couldn't cast any spells because of the mana flood. I guess 38 lands is a bit "too" ooorrr there are dead draws that I haven't noticed before.
Once again, if I removed more than 5 cards, you'll be seeing Ver7.0.
I'll post my updated deck whenever I get the chance. So far, I'll keep some of the new cards but I'll adding more draw spells and controls.
I've returned some old cards (Concentrate and etc) and removing cards (Death Cloud), my deck's performance is back as it's used to be. However, I'm playing my friend's Garza deck once again and it's a close match.
My only complain are these:
* Need something against fliers. (i.e. more spot removal or Paralyze(?!?))
* LD is sometimes annoying. However, I might be needing an additional solutions.
With those questions, I'll be using this as my basis for improvement.
I'll post my current deck Ver6.1 sometime this week.
Bonus question:
Question: For Grixis color, what's the usual target for Intuition? Usually a 3 card win when w of them will be dropped but I'm getting all them back.
Thanks. So far, I'm still on the win-lose situation today with my deck. My friend beat me with Garza a couple of time however, I'm thinking of giving more spot removals.
I've been testing and retesting them like crazy. And continue until I feel satisfied with my build.
What's your opinion with my deck? I'm not using Ver6.0 because of the previous results. It's different than before but I went back to Ver5.0 with more addition to it.
Here's my current deck:
This one is focusing on combing speed and control. Ver6 is a but annoying in regards that I can't do anything in some cases. So far, Tutors are on its maximum range and draw power is questionable.
how is version 7 working?
I'd like to see you fit these cards in for power alone
Nicol Bolos, Planes walker
Cruel Ultimatum
Relic of Progenitus
Fact or Fiction
you may also like Sarkhan the Mad
All of these cards are powerful as u know, Relic of Progenitus is a double edge sword but i also run it in Scion of the Ur-Dragon (reanimater styleish) EDH and it has paid off.
"I don't know why people say a double-edged sword is bad. It's a sword. With two edges." -Kamahl, pit fighter
Cruel Ultimatum does everything u want in your deck, kill, draw, reanimate
Fact or Fiction is just amazing draw at instant speed
Sarkhan the Mad might do well in your deck like i use it in my EDH (scion) for top decking (great combo with any tutor or Liliana). He also says "Target creature's controller SACRIFICES it" so it will trigger your general and get rid of a problem (cause u can deal with a 5/5 dragon right?, you should)
the "man lands" sound good to me and tectonic edge is powerful.

Introduction:
- B U Forcing your opponent to close their creatures just to be bigger and as a payment
Strengths
In addition, early turn ramp such as Sol Ring and Signets gives you the edge in either multiplayer and 1v1. I'm pretty much surprised that it could be fast which entire depends on your opening hand
Weaknesses
Card Rosters
Explanations Coming Soon:
Creatures
Chainer, Dementia Master : He's good for a deck with sport removals. Urborg's best friend when it comes to 2+ colored decks.
Duplicant : He's an A-lister removal. Splashable and a major annoyance to any deck.
Greater Gargadon : Big muscles and autoinclude if your opponent has spot/sweeping removals in your area.
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker : If you're running with more creatures than General. He should be in it.
Akroma, Angel of Fury: She's fun to play. Her firebreathe is good. However, she's tends to be slow.
Flametongue Kavu: Sweet sweet removal to use.
Lyzolda, the Blood Witch: I would prefer using her that contains R or B. She's decent if you have creatures to abuse.
Morphling: Superman himself. Sadly, he's not that super when I used him.
Mulldrifter: Drawing cards with feat. Add him if you can.
Oona, Queen of the Fae: She's a goddess of control. You can produce as much tokens with your heart's content and still mill your opponent's library.
Puppeteer Clique : I'm trying to add this card to my deck. He's useful whenever you have complete field control.
Reiver Demon: Bit expensive. He's one of my initial arsenal until I need something quick and fast for 1v1 matches.
Shriekmaw: Terror on legs. He's awesome if you can keep him back every turn.
Solemn Simulacrum: Splashable manaramp and card advantage. 'Nuff said.
Sower of Temptation: Add him!!! Control is good. If your opponent sac it. It's still good because he'll lose 1 creature one way or the other.
Trinket Mage: One of the reason why I like having U. This card can grab anything from your deck either be a creature, Mana Accel, utilities, equipment and even land.
Inkwell Leviathan: I prefer this card in an artifact deck...
Meloku the Clouded Mirror: Eh at best. He's only good for OTK.
Kagemaro, First to Suffer: Bit expensive and bit iffy if you have no hand to abuse.
Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind: Awesome! Awesome Awesome! One of my MVPs
Fabricate: This card is awesome find your Oblivion Stone and etc!
Concentrate: Draw power is draw!
Frantic Search: This card is love-hate for me.
Earthquake: I love this card because you can spend how big you wanted to be. You can kill your opponent with it.
Chainer's Edict :This card is good! One of the best if you have enough removals to screw your opponent.
Eyeblight's Ending: One of the "cheap" removals. Don't underestimate this card.
Hinder: One of the decent one. I underestimate this card because I used to focus on regular games. On EDH, he's one of the best.
Spelljack: My friend suggested this card... and I listen!
Act of Treason: Control card for red! However, returning sucks unless you have something like Miren, the Moaning Well
Banefire: It's ok if you have enough mana to make it uncounterable.
Banishing Knack: This card is more on the "combo"
Blightning: Awesome in regular games. In EDH, not so much unless you're focusing on hand control
Brainstorm: You must have this card!
Bribery: With Eldrazi and most people putting something big or small in their deck, you can simply grab them for 3UU
Beseech the Queen: Decent tutor! Before you know it, you have ample mana. Too less lands in your arsenal? You can still used it!
Cruel Ultimatum: This card is iffy. Decent sometimes but most of the time I can't cast it.
Cryptic Command: Awesome blue control!
Damnation: Black Wrath! Awesome!
Decree of Pain: Expensive as hell, but awesome when it resolves!
Diabolic Tutor: Decent Tutor
Demonic Tutor: Cheaper Tutor!
Divination: Decent Draw card.
Incinerate: Not that good
Lightning Bolt: Eh!
Makeshift Mannequin: Quick draw revival!
Mutilate: A must for any one who used b! A must combo if you or they control a single Urborg
Mystical Tutor: I prefer tutors that goes side by side with drawing an addition card. If not, putting it in my hand immediately.
Plague Wind: A decent one-sided removal. Although, it's expensive.
Profane Command: It's ok. I've tested that card and it does so little in my case. It's your call.
Rise from the Grave: This one is decent! That's because you can pick any creature from a graveyard.
Slave of Bolas: Awesome spell! Control AND removal!
Sudden Death: It's decent removal. Split Second helps it making it good.
Time Stretch: People actually using him along with sacking Anarchist-like effect. Infinite turns
Decree of Annihilation: Complete reset card. Most people would waste their counters on that. It's cycle-effect is 10x worst.
Wildfire: Decent sweeper and land control.
Washout: You have to think of which color is more benefit.
Terminate: cheap spot removal.
Earthquake: love this card. A decent sweeper (won't work with fliers and pro-reds) and win-con.
Grixis Charm: Versatility card!
Crosis's Charm: Versatility as its basis for BUR
Wrecking Ball: Cheap land destruction especially with cards like Maze of Ith
Buried Alive: iffy card if your opponent's doesn't use grave-hate.
Barter in Blood: Awesome 2 creature removals. Make sure that you forced them to sac your intended targets.

I was thinking of adding more removals... something like... Eyeblight's Ending, Barter in Blood, Fleshbag Marauder, or even Innocent Blood.
Right now, I'm leaning towards the Barter.
Updates:
Replacing:
Vedalken Shackles with Chainer's Edict
Hex with Eyeblight's Ending
Hex is really a bad card even in multiplayer because of some of my massive removals.
I couldn't find the Barter in my collection but sooner or later, I'll put them asap.

I iz proud! :3
Deck list will be posted later today.

However, after seeing through my list, I'm considering this additional cards:
* Lavaclaw Reaches, Creeping Tar Pit and/or Dread Statuary
* Barren Moor, Forgotten Cave and/or Lonely Sandbar
* Crucible of Worlds
* Nevinyrral's Disk
* Crosis's Charm
and the most lethal and possible addition to my arsenal:
Lethal Vapors

a) Removal went down
b) Land count went high.
c) Tutors went high
d) Draw cards went down
Been tweaking for the past few days since last week when I lost to a decent RGW Mayael the Anima. And I feel that it's almost at its another level of completion. In addition, I added the "infinite combo" just because the place that I've played are pretty an all out slugfest. If I played at my regular store, I'll simply replace the cards with Izzet Chronarch, Avatar of Woe and etc.

I'll post my updated deck whenever I get the chance. So far, I'll keep some of the new cards but I'll adding more draw spells and controls.
What say you guys?

My only complain are these:
* Need something against fliers. (i.e. more spot removal or Paralyze(?!?))
* LD is sometimes annoying. However, I might be needing an additional solutions.
With those questions, I'll be using this as my basis for improvement.
I'll post my current deck Ver6.1 sometime this week.
Bonus question:
Question: For Grixis color, what's the usual target for Intuition? Usually a 3 card win when w of them will be dropped but I'm getting all them back.

What's your opinion with my deck? I'm not using Ver6.0 because of the previous results. It's different than before but I went back to Ver5.0 with more addition to it.
