I think it's fine to take things away from lists that are posted on the web. That's why we post them, isn't it? So other players can benefit from the experience we've had with certain cards?
When I go about building a new deck, I'll do one of two things: I'll either throw a random pile together (an "outline" for what I'd like the deck to end up being) and work towards a specific deck purpose on my own (taking into account others' suggestions), or I'll check out a list built by a player I respect and choose certain aspects to emulate. If I choose the latter, I'll always try to use different cards than they did in order to accomplish similar purposes within the deck - it really challenges my memory and knowledge of older sets and obscure cards.
Admittedly, I am a Johnny. Any deck I build or "netdeck" inevitably turns into some sort of combo deck if I spend enough time with it. That's what I love about Magic: regardless of specific card choices or synergies may be identical or similar, two different players' lists will always be played and understood differently. Copying another player's list for the sole reason that it works well or wins games is stupid (especially if you have no idea how to use it), but emulating certain aspects of another player's deck because they appeal to you is never "wrong." While pure netdecking isn't the "spirit" of EDH, neither is a blanket statement that says the Magic community can't or shouldn't benefit from the experience of its veteran EDH-ers.
Like people have been saying, this is a casual format. there is a very small probability that this will EVER become a sanctioned tornament style format, because the game isn't fun untill 3+ people are playing. Honestly, playing 1v1 EDH is just a little sad if you think about it. Anywho, there are soo many Legendary Creatures in exsistance, and soo many ways to play the certain generals, it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to netdeck, seeing as you have access to every card ever printed (except for the few that are banned, etc) and more than one win condition in a deck.
That's my 2 cents on this, and I've only been playing a few months. Whenever I build a deck (I've built like, 3 maybe) usually I cruise the threads here, get a general understanding of what people do with the general, and find cards that are fun in spirit and playstyle (Playing Grip of Chaos or Warp World isn't fun when you take an hour for a turn, nor is playing Hive Mind and a Pact of Negation...)
I think that this thread is actually beneficial to the edh format. Approaching a format with limitless possibilities is intimidating, and I know when I first thought about creating a deck and particifipating, I was turned off by the amount of decisions I would have to make just to be able to play (i.e which colors, which general, which cards, what style etc.)
Because of threads like this I was able to see what other people had created and use that as a jumping off point. My first deck ever was card for card a deck list someone had posted on the forums. After playing with it a few times I realized there were a lot of cards that just felt like they didnt belong, and other cards that I had played with before that I thought deserved a spot. Now approximately 4 months into the format I would say the deck is about 50% netdecked and about 50% my own. In addition, I have built an entirely new deck that is 100% my own that originated from something I was trying to do with my old deck, that expanded into its own strategy.
The point I am trying to make is that having a resource like this is incredibly valuable to newer players, and even older players looking for new ideas.
As a side note, Im tired of people knocking on 1v1 edh. I dont understand why people are so intent on having their version of what is fun, be the only version of what is fun.
