The ban list is great, waaaaaaay better than RC provides, as I've been trying to convey that they just don't have the time to devote to an ever changing demand. Its WoTC product now and they want to support it as much as they can. So very excited by this turns of events.

You're really stretching to try to claim some victory here championing a 1v1 ban list specifically designed for an EDH environment that is completely different from multiplayer paper EDH games. Their 1v1 banlist for the vastly different MTGO environment couldn't be more irrelevant to paper EDH, especially multiplayer, and they even went as far as to say the changes are because 1v1 is more prevalent online - EDH is not the same on MTGO as it is in paper. They even state the reasons for this change. I feel like your post came out of the mouth of a Magic player at FOX News, because it conveniently ignores the facts of the matter.
Yeah, this banlist is utter garbage for multiplayer. Clearly designed for 1v1 with almost no thought to multiplayer, and admittedly so. I'm sure happy they unbanned problem cards that were widely hated to force this trash on the community.

Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!

WoTC sell commander products each year, its worth a lot of money to them. I can see in the not too distant future, that the list becomes official for their (Commander not EDH) paper game as well. Its up the public to decide if they want to go EDH or Commander list, but of course it just makes sense to follow a list that is actively sort to balance the game for the general buyers of cards and not surprisingly WoTC actually have an understanding of whats is going on, which I've been pointing out RC do not. RC only know something when mob riots break out and only a year after the fact as well. Listen I'm just saying "watch this space"...it's just a matter of time before the change over is done and we can all get on with playing a better game.
You do know that this whole thing started due to changes the French duel folks made, which caused folks in Italy to make their own list and talk to WotC who then said "you're right...MTGO and paper are two different environments blah blah"
...

1. "WotC sells commander products each year, it's worth a lot of money to them." You and they likely have different points of 'lots of money'. I would argue that Commander is still last on the list of money making formats, when you consider Conspiracy and Modern Masters. I'm sorry, that's a bit laughable. What 'makes sense' is a list that's easy to follow. Standard and Modern have them, after all. Even Legacy and Vintage are reasonably easy to follow. And balance is difficult to maintain in those formats as is. Also, while the RC may, as you say, 'only know something when mob riots break out', WotC tends to regularly CAUSE them. Four cards in one Standard rotation that have had to be banned because no one saw the combos? What's the record number anyway...anyone have a clue? Additionally, the RC can be moved faster to action, as was seen with Leovold; I, personally, would rather they observe and consider than rush haphazardly into potential disaster.

I honestly don't care if Wizards chooses to push this banlist onto paper multiplayer Commander. In some ways it is better, in other ways it is worse. It solves some of the problems that I have with the current multiplayer banlist - Fast Mana, Necropotence, Hermit Druid, but at the same time creates new problems - Upheaval, Primeval Titan, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, Sylvan Primordial, and ignores some rather glaring problems - Iona, Shield of Emeria.

Are they for sure getting rid of the established banlist or just adding to it? I couldn't quite tell based on their official post (or I skim read too quickly...)

Probably during Combo Winter Standard (Tempest/Urza/5E) when 10 cards got banned in the course of about 6 months.
And that's to say nothing of what happened to Type 1/1.5 the following September. Dark days for aggro players.

They're replacing it on MTGO only.
Than I completely agree with you - there are some cards added back into the fold that are going to be issues, most notably PrimeTime and Prophet. I imagine emergency bans will take place shortly to address that.
At the same time, I am also pissed that 2/3 of my decks on MTGO (Derevi Bird Tribal and Zur Astral Slide) just got destroyed because the Commanders were removed. I get the issue they are for 1v1, and that even in multiplayer they can be brutal, but applying the same BL of 1v1 for multiplayer is recipe for disaster and I am one of probably few (because I intentionally played 2 commanders as not oppressive) that just lost out big on decks :/
The most positive thing is that MTGO is going to get a meta that does seek to balance itself with banning/unbannings. That's the whole point of having their own list. We just saw in the last standard bannings how they are not afraid to ban a card immediately, and largely based off MTGO statistics. This is what I was suggesting in this thread is that data is important. Sure at the moment its probably non-existent for MTGO commander, but it will only get better. The game will just get better and better according to metas on MTGO. More analysis, feedback loops. RC was just never going to be equipped to understand the changing meta according to new set releases.
RC basically has a policy of "please don't break the game, make decks that are fun and fair". Hmmm, yeah, that's not quite how it works buddies for the entire human population.
Yes the unbanning of some cards is a problem for multiplayer, but at least we know that they CAN fix it. Where as RC just doesn't. It takes a couple of years, before its gets to the point of FFS. WoTC can make changes within weeks and they probably will. I would wouldn't be surprised to see a multiplayer ban list within a few months. It's just that they want to get the ball rolling.
<OMG I'm so happy to be free of RC inability to act and just general lack of knowledge of competitive metas. Bye, bye for good.>
It seems like the biggest issue is online official play. I haven't done it often, but I've been on the receiving end around tables of "oh, you are playing that deck, I'm going to go trade instead" or with friends "I F@$&ing hate that deck! Don't use it!"
Oddly enough, most of the cards I used they hated were oppressive/locking cards, like Statis or Cyclonic Rift.
I understand the hatred towards Mana Crypt, but Sol Ring is an EDH staple. It has been reprinted in almost every commander product AND in Kaladesh Masterpieces. This is like Demonic Tutor or Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth for a multicolor deck with B. You have no reason NOT to run these cards. Sol Ring is MASSIVELY more available than these cards and has, as stated earlier, in almost every Commander precon. I don't see it by itself being oppressive when it is so accessible. Reliquary Tower can also go into every deck and I wouldn't call it bannable.
I do however agree that Iona, Shield of Emeria is by itself oppressive enough to be banned. Everyone seemed to think that BFZ and OGW solved that problem, but they really have not. It took me a long time to even use the card in my competitive deck due to how game ending it is. Painter's Servant is nowhere near as much of a problem with Iona out of the picture. Iona could end a game alone.
If it takes SO long for MTGO to be updated after a change, that is 100% Wizard's problem, not mtgcommander.net, as they don't edit the MTGO servers (WotC does).
As for how long it takes for mtgcommander.net to ban items, remember EDH's inception: a group based casual game. Duel commander was not a consideration and is probably still greatly in the backseat. Wizards typically pushes for more tournament oriented cards and rulings. It took them forever to even make cards that had "opponents" or "opponents' _______s" printed on them.
Lastly on the topic of casual, house rules are still a thing. I've had to correct people on this site that "10 poison counters are all that is needed to lose in a normal game of commander" since they had been playing with 20 counters dealing the loss via house rules so many times. There is one rule about casual magic that is not in the comphrensive rules and is held above THE golden rule: if ALL players (in a casual game[or all members of a casual tournament]) agree to change the rules, redo a play, or gamestate, the change can occur. So if a card is deemed bad by all players, chuck it and keep going. EDH was created as a group casual game, we don't necessarily need someone to tell us all the bad choices we need to avoid. If we are smart enough to make a commander deck, we can make group decisions (and maybe even make them house rules).
The most positive thing is that MTGO is going to get a meta that does seek to balance itself with banning/unbannings. That's the whole point of having their own list. We just saw in the last standard bannings how they are not afraid to ban a card immediately, and largely based off MTGO statistics. A decision to not focus on competitive games does not equate lack of knowledge. They are more familiar with competitive game play that you most likely could ever hope to be.
It should be noted, however, that while this list is designed for 1v1, it's going to apply to multiplayer Commander on MTGO as well.
And just as important to note that, being focused on balancing 1v1 tournament play, the list is not going to take multiplayer "balance" into account, contrary to Darren's assertion.

Leovold hasn't even been legal for a year and the RC banned him and wotc for some reason didn't.
The RC banned him with good reason - he kills games, not players.
WOTC didn't ban him with good reason - in a MTGO banlist, it doesn't make sense to ban a card that isn't on MTGO.
Leovold is on MTGO, was added to treasure chests a while back.
Huh. Haven't checked in a while. I just remembered the announcement that Conspiracy 2 wouldn't be released. In that case, it is odd that they didn't ban him.
Plans have changed. They're now planning on splitting off a separate 1v1 format with this banlist while keeping a multiplayer banlist that follows the RC. Source

Holy *****, this is actually the best possible solution and I'm eating crow over my doubts they'd do this.

I wish they'd put out something wide reaching about the change that isn't a link back to a Tumblr post floating around various social medias and fansites. I've had to explain the situation both before and after the announcement today to so many players in my local community that are confused and scared that their paper decks were getting huge losses. This caused so much unnecessary confusion and is exactly why Wizards needs to keep out of the business of EDH and just let the RC do it's thing. Screw the people with giant hate boners for the RC, this entire thing has been an exercise in why it's not a good idea for Wizards to interject.

The biggest single hit to Standard was 8 cards when Arcbound Ravager, Disciple of the Vault, and all 6 artifact lands got banned in March 2005. This barely beat out the 7 cards of the March 1999 banning of Dream Halls, Earthcraft, Lotus Petal, Fluctuator, Recurring Nightmare, Time Spiral, and the emergency banning of Memory Jar. It also beat out the banning of all cards that were restricted in Standard back in 1997, which was also 7 cards.
The largest total number of cads banned in Standard at one time was 10 when the above 7 cards were banned in addition to Windfall and Tolarian Academy and the were joined by Mind Over Matter soon after.
Giving that list a run for its money was the original Standard banned list when they eliminated Restricted cards from Standard altogether. Mind Twist and Channel were already banned, but this added Balance, Land Tax, Strip Mine, Black Vise, Ivory Tower, Zuran Orb, and Hymn to Tourach to the list making it 9 cards long.
Also coming in at 9 cards long was the Standard with the 8 Ravager bannings plus Skullclamp that had been banned the year before.
So yeah, we've had worse than the current situation of having 4 cards banned in Standard.

Holy *****, this is actually the best possible solution and I'm eating crow over my doubts they'd do this.
Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
