i have recently decided to take the challenge of building a commander deck purely from my collection during quaratninte, aside from the commander itself. i am looking for a commander who can be built from mostly bulk commons and uncommons. what ideas do you guys have?
high value stuff just helps hone a deck, makes it more consistent, but ultimately it just serves as a means to run with the ideas already present. so what exactly do you want the commander to do, like what kind of gameplan do you want?
the list of strong cheap builds i've seen is staggeringly long, but fine here's some highlights: krenko mob boss, marwyn the nurturer, meren of clan nel toth, ephara god of the polis, derevi, mikaeus the unhallowed, prime speaker zegana, talrand sky summoner, saheeli the gifted, jhoira weatherlight captain, purphoros god of the forge, edric, inalla, the list goes on and on and on and on...
I'd stay mono colored to help keep the mana base cheap. I think you could build a good Kamahl, Fist of Krosa deck and just fill it with cheap mana dorks, efficient beaters, and ramp. The commander eventually will win the game by using his Overrun ability, turning all your early game chaff into lethal evasive damage. As an aside, Kamahl also gives you the ability to attack on a different axis - you can animate enemy lands and, if you include mass damage (probably from artifacts in this deck), you can take out enemy mana bases as a backup plan.
