I love counters, I love clones, so it's natural that Volrath #2 is the first legend that makes me want to build a deck around, and he is VERSATILE.
1) Volrath drops -1/-1 counters that goes well with proliferate and various other Amonkhet/Lorwyn mechanics.
2) Volrath can copy any creature with a counter on it, it doesn't have to be -1/-1, which means you could go Simic +1/+1 too.
3) Volrath can three shots and opponent regardless of his "shape". Invisible Stalker is an obvious include.
That said, Volrath can go so many direction it's hard not to brew him. I will create and continuous to update list of cards
One cute feature is his ability to immediately copy things that come into play with counters. For example Anthroplasm is kinda cute, if janky. Makes it easier to get to a nice round 10 for infect at least.
It's still a bit clunky and could use a lot of fine tuning but some of my favorite interactions are with stuff like Cephalid Constable or Needle Specter or Cold-Eyed Selkie. If Volrath can connect bounce/draw/discard x7 is backbreaking.
I'm also interested in finding some way to make him a Sultai Kraj deck. Any good creatures in black with tap/untap abilities?

Will look at your deck when I got time. The first suggestion I could think of is Necrotic Ooze since Kraj would be able to use all activate abilities in all graveyard. Then there's Helldozer and Infernal Denizen.
I feel the need to speak up for Vhati il-Dal. I built a deck with him at the helm with lots of funny -1/-1 shenannigans. It's a flavorful include in the 99, too.

something that is interesting as well is copying consecrated sphinx because volrath stays a copy till your next turn. hellooooooooooo card draw!
You're mean!
I think any combo done by Experiment Kraj could be applied here with Volrath, such as the usual infinite mana elf + an untap. Kraj deck lacks an X spell, Volrath has black that allows Torment of Hailfire, Villainous Wealth, and Exsanguinate. Even after a board wipe, Necrotic Ooze becomes a secondary Volrath/Kraj.
yeah i figured that was that was the route to go too. My meta is not so keen on infinite combos so i was hoping for something more elegant not just infi mana + x spell. The problem is also that kraj forces you to run a lot of garbage cards just to get the combo off. I'm not inherently opposed to infinite combo but i'd my deckbuilding style is such that i want to make sure that every card in the deck is playable.
I like the idea of seedborn muse and being able to do osmething gross multiple times a turn for every players turn.
You could also run stuff like magus of the abyss and co and get double triggers and then change to something else eot before your turn.
I think you create token that's the same as whom Volrath is the moment combat damage is dealt, which could only be Spawnwrithe or Giant Adephage themselves, so you'd just create a token of Spawnwrithe/Adephage.
as i understand it you create a 7/5 Spawnwrithe with Volrath's ability. Cards like permeating mass and stuff with myriad is probably also worth considering. nacatl war-pride.
isareth the awakener is also a cute way to get back a critical creature from the yard in the combat step
On a separate note since this deck seems to be really mana hungry i think Kruphix, God of Horizons is probably worth including since it allows you to store mana for future turns as well as protect volrath.
Idk if this is smart or not but im thinking of using a lot of doing a voltron thing. 7 power is a great floor for power cause you only need to hit 3 times. Just copy an unblockable like Slither Blade to swing as an unblockable and try to use +1 counters or even stuff like Thornling/Aetherling/Endling to pump him up for bigger damage. The lings also have protective abilities too.

I was thinking the same thing and including Heroes' Bane or Chameleon Colossus. End of your turn, copy Heroes' Bane and pump Volrath. On my turn, do it again and spend one more to copy the unblockable dude and swing.
I don’t think him copying certain legendary creatures is terrible. You could do it before the creature is killed or in response to an effect. And then there are some like skithiryx or Ulamog that would give you value for attacking
I always wanted to attack with Nacatl War-Pride and, with the trigger on the stack, cast Cytoshape to make it anything else with a crazy ETB so all the tokens would be that. Now I have to try that with Volrath.

Power Conduit is fun if you want to change the -1/-1 counter to +1/+1.
Experiment Kraj also seems like a must, dumping counters to fuel both its ability and Volrath's.
I wonder if any Level Up creatures would be worth it. Lighthouse Chronologist, maybe?

i plan on keeping a lot of mana open each turn. Or get Seedborn out.
I don;t want to run this deck as super competitive though (though It will not be jank either)
