Working on a list of my upgraded Edgar preco to bring to my lgs and I was wondering how many vampire cards an Edgar deck needs to work at a minimum. Because obviously I want a good amount to trigger eminence and other tribal effects but then there’s non vampire creatures and non creatures with effects that are useful like my avacyn and purphuros, eldrazi monument, draw and ramp spells removal etc.
So I’m wondering about how many vampires the deck should have at a minimum to function properly. I’m going for an aggroy midrange as I like to play lots of distruption and or card advantage in my aggro decks and they end up a bit like midrange.
A lot of people support(and I agree) that it's just as much the CMC of vampires as the amount...it might even be MORE important.
I have 29 in my decklist, and it works out pretty well. The expensive vampires like Butcher of Malakir and others in the 6+ CMC should be pitched for guys like Viscera Seer and even Gatekeeper of Malakir, or Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle. That said, I do believe I could benefit a bit more from MORE vampires. Given that I doubt you have or will get some of the cards I have in my decklist, a viable run might be to start with 30 and go from there.
I think between 25 and 30 is a good baseline for the card type your deck cares about, whatever that might be (instants and sorceries for Niv-Mizzet, Parun, and vampires for Edgar). Higher can be even better, but once you're at 30, you don't need to force more at any cost - also keep open spots for stuff like ramp and control which can't be always be had in the exact form your deck would like.
Is the butcher worth keeping if there a bit of a sacrifice sub theme involved. Sacking a token to a viscera seer or indulgent aristocrat or my elderly monument to make everyone else sack seems good. And I don't have grave pact or dictate atm.
Every one drop vampire is playable, and then most of the two drops. Ideally you're wanting around 42+. It's like the Mardu Edric. Anything else is a much more horribly inefficient deck than it could be.

If you can split the difference well enough, it COULD...but if you have enough aggro in the deck(and with cheap vampires, it's pretty easy to do so), you could find yourself often not seeing him before you win, or holding him in your hand as you do other things. It won't trigger Markov's eminence, but if you want to go that route, put in some options like Entomb, Buried Alive, and combo them with Unburial Rites or Reanimate, even Animate Dead.
Do you think a slower more midrange version of Edgar with more draw recursion and protection pieces for staying power. would work better if I currently don’t have access to the stax pieces and fast tutors. Trying to dip my toes into edh at my lgs as I like the community there. putting together a basic Edgar list as vampires have been one of my main decks since I started playing back in m13 so have a good amount of cards already and like the theme. Not sure if he’s the deck I’ll continue with from there also like kaalia/tariel(depending on meta) and liliana heretical healer.

Why? This sounds like just a worse Edgar. The whole point of him is to abuse his free bodies spawning ability and you can't do that with a body here and there. You don't even have to go Stax (though I'd highly recommend Contamination anyway since you fetch it via enlightened tutor and it's so painstakingly easy to lock with it here). If you want midrange, ease up on the tribe and go Mathas for a generalized strat that can go over the top better.
Edgar is cool and all, but he is literally one of the most linear decks to build. He doesn't have a 2nd or even third gear.
I’m sure you could get away with less, but then you’re not taking full advantage of your Commander. Edgar is heavy suited for an aggro build, due to his eminence ability. If you want to run a midrange vampire deck, I’d recommend these commanders:
Also, having a Necropotence to recover from board wipes is nice. I’d keep the Eldrazi Monument to protect from board wipes. These are some other artifacts and enchantments that I play that stay around after a wrath of god:
I don’t run too much interaction in my build because there’s no card that I’m scared of, outside of an infinite combo. The deck can recover from board wipes, and even a ensnaring bridge can’t stop the damage for long.
Wasn't really set on mid-range just a little nervous about going to aggro in multi-player cause I hear go wide just gets stomped by board wipes.
I mean, it's not really gonna be a great strat in multiplayer. It's fast on that one person but it's gonna wail ineffectively towards the rest. In 1v1 it's obscene and over powered, however.
The best card at 5 mana and over isn't even a vampire, but Gray Merchant of Asphodel still plays out ridiculously.
I would disagree. Playing that in non-mono B decks puts Gary at a diluted risk that increases exponentially the more colors you add in. It's the same reason I question playing Vampire Nocturnus in an Edgar deck...the risk of having a dead top deck is too great, until you can manipulate the top with stuff like Skullclamp or Necropotence.
While it's true that wraths can and will ruin your day, you should have ways to quickly rebuild. Necropotence especially, but also Ad Nauseam, Wheel of Fortune, Champion of Dusk, just draw into a pile of extra vamps and resume normal service. They'll run out of Wraths before you run out of Vampires.
