MTG Salvation

I am playing in a creature heavy meta, and I am having a hard time getting the "pulse" of the meta. Game after game I can either play a combo deck and feel dirty, or I just get run over with any other deck (Ninjas, Elves, Goblins, etc).

So I am looking for a deck that punishes players for playing creatures, and screws up everything to do with turning creatures sideways.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

you can go either "pillow fort" propaganda/solitary confinement/glacial chasm

Or you can just go super heavy control with child of alara/gift of immortality/phyrexian tower.

I think just off the top of my head, those are pretty reasonable ways to go. Or maybe you can even go elesh norn, grand cenobite with helm of the hosts?

One deck that I had used aaaaages ago was a mono-white stax deck.

Ninjas, elves and goblins don’t tend to have a ton of recursion so running reasonable removal should be fine. My Dralnu build is mostly a spellslinger build, and there’s some decent stuff I run that just totally hoses these sort of decks. Night of Souls’ Betrayal, Archfiend of Ifnir and Void Winnower are all excellent there. It actually stubs me how few decks run Archfiend because it’s been absolutely devastating for me wherever I run it. That being said if you’re not into looting Massacre Wurm, Demon of Dark Schemes or Massacre Girl could help.

I’m not even sure if those are in your colors though - Norn could help, Ixidron, Insurrection, Alpha Brawl, Thalia, Heretic Cathar too - surprisingly in that last case. Obviously it’s not removal but it does slow those sort of decks down nicely. Constant Mists, Arachnogenesis, Spike Weaver for green - although to be fair I can’t think of anything off the top of my head in terms of actual removal for green.

I'd say run more early board wipes. Anger of the Gods, Toxic Deluge, Slaughter the Strong, ...
The other route would be going full blown creature hate. I'm currently building a creatureless Keranos, God of the Storms deck of that kind, that utilizes Aether Flash, Dingus Staff, Dream Tides, Overburden, Repercussion, Smoke and about every viable red board wipe. If you want to be an utter d*ck, add in Burning Sands, too.

My mono-blue deck runs Overburden. If you play black you could run Spreading Plague. Both of those cards are extremely difficult for creature decks to beat because they can never establish a board.

Did someone say creature hate? I'm pretty sure someone said creature hate.

My Erebos list is pretty good at blowing dudes up. From Damnation to Tainted Aether to Smallpox, it does a good job of removing existing creatures and preventing newly played ones from becoming too relevant. If your meta is virtually nothing but low to the ground aggro decks that focus you I would make some adjustments, such as playing lower cost spot removal and edicts as well as Night of Souls' Betrayal and other cards toc mentioned, but otherwise it should do well fresh out of the box.

Dealing with creature heavy metas is probably best done with a lighter touch.

Just play a little Propaganda and keep them focused on each other.

If you go full ham on the sweepers, edict crazy, or whatever, you're just gonna turn into the archenemy.

I think that the best way to go is to play the control role in either an Azorius, Dimir, or Esper deck. There are enough board wipes and/or mass-bounce spells to buy enough time to try and run the creature decks out of resources, after which you can take over the game with CA engines while they sputter with synergy cards that require multiple creatures in play.

That's part of the fun.

Horobi, Death's Wail is an absolute nightmare in a creature meta, and is made on a super cheap budget.
