X-Cost could work, but its not inherently land-centric, if they wanted that they might as well have thrown Rosheen Meanderer in there for good measure.
The other issue is while it might have had a Bojuka Bog, Forge of Heroes and the odyssey cyclelands, but that is all it has for utility in the lands. The rest is slow fetches, bounce lands, basics, and refuges. Especially when the total land count is 43.
Land decks take a bit of rewiring in the head to wrap your brain around. Your graveyard is like a second hand and its where you can make use of a variety of utility lands for later. Land decks can also throw their weight by slamming into someone with their lands they turned into creatures for the turn. Land decks also provide a powerful amount of draw even when not factoring Windgrace. Land decks have an obscene amount of tutors to find specific lands for when in a pinch. Land decks can also use their lands to fuel other effects to shift the game into their favor by sacrificing them.
To any other deck, lands are just...there. Sure other decks might run a few utility lands, but its obviously not the main focus or even secondary focus of the deck.
But please, please, upgrade the freaking mana bases. They are largely embarrassingly terrible. Does anyone anywhere at this point need another Vivid Grove?? Are they trying to test how many crappy CIPT duals it takes before you would be better off just running more basic lands? I would much rather have another version of the new art cycle basics we got from Guay and others a couple years back than more CIPT draft chaff.
I think I can kind of imagine what's going on at wotc that they build the manabases this way. If they just did all basics, people would find color screw annoying and would complain that their manabase doesn't look anything like a "real" edh deck. But they also don't want to use rare slots on fixing lands because most casual EDH players don't care toooo much about lands and they only have so much reprint value to burn. So they throw in a bunch of cheap fixers that kind of look like a real manabase if you squint, while making it easy to upgrade. Just replace the etbts with conditional etbts or better etbts, and then eventually with fetches or whatever.
I was about to play a game against my new local meta (I'm living in Cambridge now - anyone want a game? Anyone on here live nearby? No?) and one guy was making a new deck. It might have been 3 colors, but I think it was just 2, and he was throwing together the manabase. And he says "oops, I almost forgot to put in evolving wilds! That card goes in every deck." or something to that effect. And I thought he must be kidding, but he was serious (and then I felt like kind of a dick for laughing). All those trash etbt lands do get played by people. Most players - especially casual edh players - do not know how to build a manabase well. They don't see etbt as being a big deal and they'll happily throw in a dozen of them to avoid getting color screwed. For those players, the manabases are probably pretty close to what they're used to, even if I cringe every time I see a vivid in a 2 color deck.
yea, the manabases being upgraded would be great, especially for newer players. That being said, i think sprinkling some of the ETB tapped ones in can still be good, just to show newer players the value of tempo. I'd wanna see them reprint things like karpulsan forest and the like, just 'cuz they really aren't all that bad.
Actually, a pseudo-karoo like simic growth chamber that you can play during an opponent's turn could be awesome though. ramp a land, save a land from destruction/targeted effect/reuse ETB triggers even if it comes into play tapped could definitely be a good thing to see.
I didn't see any hints as to what the themes of the decks for c19 were going to be. any ideas? or is there a place where they've been listed?
My only hope is we see a similar pattern to last year's introduction of interesting 2 color commanders in 3 color decks (see Yuriko, Xantcha etc). That way a Jeskai deck could also have a much needed Boros general. A spells-matter Jeskai deck with a cheaper variant of Firesong and Sunspeaker would be great, but its also the color combo I'm positive will be in 2019.

Really oool idea, i hope they will do it.

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
