Just went over to EDHREC. Looked at the decks and most had a Legendary as Commander, not a Planeswalker.
I'm new to this game and wondering why that is?
What's the advantage to using a Legendary?
Well, the biggest advantage is that you are following the rules that way
Commander does not allow Plaenswalkers to be commanders (unless the Planeswalker says it can be the Commander). Other formats, such as Brawl, allow for Planeswalkers to be commanders, but Commander does not.
On a bit of a side note, there are a lot more legendary creatures than there are planeswalkers so there are a lot more things that can be used to build around when using a creature vs a planeswalker.

It isn’t that it’s an advantage, it’s just literally the rules (and even the foundation) of Commander. Every commander deck must have a legendary creature as its commander/general. Or one of several legendary planeswalkers that possess the necessary rules text that allow it to serve as a commander. If a commander deck has any other card as it’s commander, then it’s outside of the official rules.
Commander/EDH has always used Legendary Creatures. The planeswalkers were pretty much a one time thing (With the exception of the Kenrith twins) So you have 7 planewalkers that can be your ocmmander.

Twelve. Kenrith Twins and two cycles.
It's actually only 11. One of the cycles only had four given that they switched from 5 decks per year to 4.
Legendary creatures also have the added benefit of being able to kill your opponents after dealing them a total of 21 combat damage. No matter their life total, if you deal them 21 damage over the course of the game with you commander, they die

Planeswalker commanders can still kill people with commander damage if you can animate them!
Granted, none of the existing planeswalker commanders have an ability like any of the Gideons or Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker, so you need to involve other effects. But something like Enchanted Evening-Opalescence is totally within the realm of what I would expect from an Estrid deck.
