Personally I don't really care if people proxy something, as long as it can be read clearly and understood what it is easily. I've had people just stick a piece of paper into a sleeve that reads "Cruel ultimatum" and that can get annoying because I have to look up the card on my phone to read it. If it's clear and easy enough to read then I don't mind at all, for whatever the reason.
I do have one gold bordered card that I have in a single deck that rarely sees play. It's a very weak chaos deck and the card is a Chaos Orb. Obviously this card is also banned in the format and I always ask before playing it and explain that I have a real Alpha Chaos Orb and will show them if requested. I just find it a funny card and most people are fine with letting me use it because it's so unique. That and usually I flip it terribly and it ends up destroying half of my board.
honestly these are the only proxies that i'm okay with.
they look exactly like the real thing, and generally take a little bit of effort to get anyway. someone in my group once compared them to just printing out card images and slipping them in sleeves, but i disagree given the limited availability of these things. they dont' exist for every card ever, and some are worth money.
I am okay with the collector's edition cards. They still represent an investment in the game, and proxies for powerful cards like Timetwister and Gaea's Cradle are not exactly cheap, except in comparison to the actual cards in question.
I am also just fine with proxies so long as people actually own the card in question (maybe they want to play it in multiple decks, but don't own multiple copies), or they are trying it out before seeking out the actual card. Even in other cases, I don't really have a huge issue with proxies, and especially not when people with limited budgets are proxying for things they just can't afford and which lots of other players have (fetchands, for example), with one exception. People proxying power cards they don't own and don't have any intention of getting, that annoys me. I don't run proxies in order to use cards I don't own, and I don't think there is any reason for people to do this in regard to "power" cards since this isn't meant to be a competitive format. I have still, in all the games I've played, never seen an actual copy of Imperial Seal, and it seems to me there is no reason to proxy for it, since there are more accessible options that do the same thing.
My proxies are of the "temporary nature" in the sense I only proxy-play cards I intend to get the foil of eventually, but at the same time to keep my MTG budget lower to the best I can it's not only a matter of waiting for the scarce card to pop up (on top of pledging not to buy nonfoils so I don't have waste time cycling the card out later on), but also waiting for a reprint for cases of cards that are absurdly expensive due to a lack of reprint, so that Adarkar Wastes is going to be quite the long-term proxy, especially since I've already since how well reprints dented prices in the enemy-color counterparts (Which I obviously acquired already).
I've been working on foiling out my Mayael deck for a few years. I was wondering, how do you decide which foil version of a card to get? Do you prefer the foil version of the original printing? Do you get the most expensive foil version regardless of the printing? What if there isn't a foil version of the original printing, do you still get the original non-foil or a more recent foil version? What if a more recent foil printing has better art than the original foil version, which would you choose? How do you feel about promo foils?
I just dont want to buy a 400 dollar collecters edition twister and then get hairy eyeballed by other people.
I don't mind if people play with gold bordered cards. Also, I can't believe the Collector's Edition Timetwister sells for $400.
Highlander Tournaments allow for Collector's Edition cards which is a large part of what keeps them having as much value as they do (at least for all the power).
