But I think this card is the hidden gem of the set for those blue controlly types who play legacy formats like commander. I know my Azami, Lady of Scrolls deck immediately slotted it in. A one drop 1/1 flying wizard who can protect master and our Lady or the Lab Man?
In other decks i can see it as a solid addition. It has evasion, as you mentioned at least one creature type that comes with a lot of interactions and can counter stuff. 5/7.
He has potential in a deck focused heavily on creatures like Animar or something. He triggers Kefnet's Monument and Animar, Soul of Elements, even though he benefits from neither.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

Yup forgot about the Spiketail cycle. I like them because they don't need to tap to activate. Very useful. The others that need to tap to counter as part of their own activation cost have a niche somewhere I'm sure but I don't run any of those because of the aforementioned tap activation cost.
It's also arguably the best pirate for admiral beckett brass. Dude has a solid type line.
I like this sort of effect in multiplayer. Unless you're significantly ahead, it's probably enough deterrence to send that targeted removal at someone else's creature, rather than actually absorb removal itself. But it's not lightning greaves where it becomes a problem that must be dealt with.
Fits nicely into Marchesa, the Black Rose - he's evasive, so can easily get a counter and gives you a repeatable way of protecting your creatures. Probably not quite as good as Spellskite but a useful card none-the-less.

I know it's no Cursecatcher. Or Martyr of Frost. Or even Voidmage Prodigy.

Gold.
On behalf of Edric, Spymaster of Trest players around the world i can confirm that Siren Stormtamer is strictly better than the other 3 in Flying Men builds.

(I became familiar with creatures that counter because decks with a lot of creatures need them.)
Anyway, Siren Stormtamer's a soft counter (like Rebuff the Wicked and Turn Aside), but a useful one. I like him and Spiketail Hatchling in my Derevi because they pass the Sun Titan test.

Mmm Sun Titan test.
