I keep mixing this card up with devour in shadow. It's strange, but i'm old enough to find red or green cards with the word 'shadow' in its name to be somewhat jarring (because shadow was a w, u, b ability).
In-game though, this card is a house. I don't think it's a card that should be allowed to resolve, and if it does, unless you can split second kill that player, i'd be very wary of it!
Many times I have either been on the giving or receiving end of a game-ending Vicious Shadows. My experience with it is that it either gets removed quickly or ends the game quickly.
That it triggers on any creature and not just your own or non-tokens makes it pretty amazing. I've got this into Damnation same turn for this win before. It is pretty vulnerable though and a bit slow.
I feel like I used to see this more often. It's been replaced in decks that try to go infinite or close to it by purphoros and the like. If your trying to loop sacrifices, etb will happen as often as dies, isn't shut off by gy hate (but is by torpor orb effects), and it doesn't matter how much you do per trigger since you'll hit enough triggers for a kill whether it's 7 damage or 2 each time. Purphoros is just less vulnerable and significantly faster.
The big draw of Viscious Shadows though is when you aren't comboing. It can kill boards with relatively little setup.

Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
This is, without a doubt, one of the messiest cards ever printed, and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a unique experience.
Not to distract from card of the day, but I'd like to ask this crowd's opinion on something. Another thread got me thinking about doing something like this thread but with people's decklists. A "random deck of the day" thread conceptually, where we designate a decklist thread to raid with feedback. The list to randomly select from would probably be by submission, as dumping into any random thread on here would either be needlessly aggressive or wasting our time with a dead thread most of the time. Daily might be a bit too much turnaround for a whole deck, weekly might be to slow to keep people interested. And then there's options for this concept, it could be its own thread, or I could amend this thread and just link a deck thread beneath each RCotD. Having its own thread would be take up more forum space and be little more than a directory (as ideally, people would comment in the deck threads themselves), but it would keep this thread cleaner and get more visibility from people who don't participate here. Basically 3 questions:
Would you participate in a Random Deck Thread concept?
Would it be better as its own thread or an add-on here?
Does a daily deck seem too fast?

Upwelling actually came up in a recent discussion on the best ways to store excess mana, and with the removal of mana burn from the rules this is THE best way to store up excess mana. It's even better than Kruphix, God of Horizons in that the mana keeps its color.
As for the deck of the day concept, something like that was tried once (thread can be found here). I really liked the concept and the feedback I got for my Uril Enchantress deck was excellent, but I think one deck per day is probably a lot. Maybe call it "Deck of the Day" but really have like 3 week (Mon, Wed, Fri).
Seems a decent include for Kruphix, God of Horizons or Omnath, Locus of Mana. Could be fun otherwise in general, but weird enough that it probably wouldn't be a shoe in for much else.

I already expressed interest, I think it's a really good idea. Besides, I enjoy offfering my opinion, whether it's asked for or not
I think aesthetically and in terms of keeping lines of communication clear it's best to have a new thread for it. The mods could sticky it like this one.
Weekly seems reasonable, otherwise OP gets inundated, and before any feedback gets responded to everyone has already moved on - sometimes these things need discussion.
In terms of inclusion I'd say it would be something to discuss with mods and see what's feasible - scoeri might have some sort of script that could randomly pick a thread from, say, anything active in the decklist sub in the last 6-12 months. The logistics of something like this is best run past mods at any rate I guess is the point.
Seems a decent include for Kruphix, God of Horizons or Omnath, Locus of Mana. Could be fun otherwise in general, but weird enough that it probably wouldn't be a shoe in for much else.
Why would you play it in Kruphix of all places? Omnath is at least semi-reasonable to kill so the redundancy is kiind of justifiable, even if it being symmetrical makes it much worse.
Mostly both those cards imo reveal how overcosted and bad upwelling is. They made this cost 4, do nothing else, AND it's symmetrical. Omnath is asymmetrical, costs 3, and gives you a huge fat body too.
I'd consider contributing to the random deck plan, but honestly it takes a lot of effort to get involved in someone else's decklist. I don't mind contributing on someone's beginner deck where it's easy to give advice, but when people put up fairly tuned lists and wonder why people don't have specific feedback on a list that .01% of people are playing and they personally have sunk dozens of hours into working on...well I mean, what did you expect? There's a reason I don't really solicit feedback on my most tuned lists, it's just not realistic to expect someone coming in cold to be able to find things you haven't already thought of, if you've sunk a sufficient amount of time into it.

Man am I not observant at all today. I had thought this thread was stickied. Welp, goes to show that it's good for the community here.
Mostly I recommend getting in touch with the mods I guess just in case anyone has issues with their deck being involved? I can't see why you would but you never know. Also, they've been super helpful in the past with providing relevant info for primer committee stuff, and scoeri manages the decklist databases really well here, so it'd be a good way to get a reasonable list and a decent way to randomise it.
I'd consider contributing to the random deck plan, but honestly it takes a lot of effort to get involved in someone else's decklist. This is the hardest part, cause I can't necessarily control what other people do, but I feel like there's a lot more discussion you can have about a deck than just recommendations. Have you played with a deck like X? Have you played against a deck like X? Did you enjoy playing with or against it? What is your favorite card to draw in a deck like that? Is there a card or card synergy in the decklist you'd never considered before? Certainly, telling someone their mana is messed up and there are other cards they'd enjoy is productive, but it's not very exciting or interactive, and I can see why people wouldn't be very interested in that. But I think if we could take the way people comment on cards in here and broaden it to decks, it could be fun, as well as rile up some activity in the decklist subforum.

I like how everyone thinks this card doesn't (didn't) get rid of mana burn when it says it does in the reminder text.
And I'd say a deck of the week, give us enough time to digest what the deck does.

I'm personally not interested in Random Deck of the Day. Random Deck of the Week is more appropriate to my rhythm and engagement with the forums, but I'm also not particularly interested in that.
Random deck could be interesting. A day is definitely way too quick. Commenting on a decklist is a much bigger ordeal than simply commenting on a card.
Perhaps something like "coment on a change" could be interesting. Say you have a decklist bu are thinking about some alternatives for a few spots in the deck. Then you wouldn't need to comment on the entire deck but you have that to see what the deck tries to do and can then comment on the specific cards that is considered for the spots and their pros and cons.

An all-star in Ib Halfheart decks. Sure, you can use it to just force their entire defense onto a 1/1 as you alpha strike them, but where's the style in that?
For the record, this card was printed right after banding disappeared.
And thank you all for the responses.
I've never seen this used before, but i can imagine it plays really well with baton of morale (which i assume is nearly unplayable before)
Oh also, i'd be willing to give that deck of the bi-weekly thing a good shake.

Anyway, Invasion Plans is great for block triggers or a few other triggers. (Think things like Rot Wolf.)

Legacy|4fun|4fun|Modern|Frontier|StandardI've never seen this used before, but i can imagine it plays really well with baton of morale (which i assume is nearly unplayable before)
Oh also, i'd be willing to give that deck of the bi-weekly thing a good shake.
Legacy - Solidarity - mono U aggro - burn - Imperial Painter - Strawberry Shortcake - Bluuzards - bom
The baton is useful on the defense. Having a creature with banding can save your ass against Blightsteel Colossus or some of the scarier super tramplers (Spinebiter, Thorn Elemental, Tornado Elemental, Spinebiter, Spinebiter) But without a card like False Orders, banding is rarely useful when attacking.
Anyway, Invasion Plans is great for block triggers or a few other triggers. (Think things like Rot Wolf.)
