Do you buy extras of a precon? My store ran out of the Vampire one, and with the going price of Teferi's Protection of around 30$, they will start selling it for $50 when next shipment comes in. I have the precon already, and picked up a second one at ShopKo for $30. Was just curios on your opinions on the matter.
I have an extra to trade to others so they won't have to pay the $50 price for one. If all else fails, I have a second copy of the Protection.
I no longer buy commander products at LGS. Walmart and Shopko sell them for MSRP. And they always stock them. I've even found Commander 14/13 decks at Shopko.
Wal-mart and Toys 'R' Us sell MTG products where I live, but only months after they come out. If I want to get the pre-cons from them I probably would not be seeing them on the shelves of wal-mart until februar if I am lucky. So i buy them at my LGS
Teferi's protecting is 35 Bucks in Canada, but i bought the pre-con for 50 bucks. I want to sell the other cards which if I sell them as singles, I should be able to fetch a few bucks, maybe 20 if i trade in everything. Which I feel is fair. I didn't want the vamp deck, i just wanted teferi's protection.
Yeah the price gouging is ridiculous. We have 1 store in town to play at. Half the commander players are on a really strict budget/poor. And the store doesn't even sell product online to justify gouging the price. I will take my spare to Commander Night tonight and trade it to one of the less fortunate players who wants it. See if they have some of the recent cards that just spiked in price for the Sisay deck I want to build.

I wanted a second Draconic Domination to add its exclusive dragons to my dragon collection binder, to horde even more Scourge of Valkas, and have some more Kindred Discovery and Fractured Identity but then it somehow turned out to be the most popular (and most marked up) of the decks despite having the least value >_>

Yoj could also try amazon could you not?
Problem with amazon is it takes forever to arrive unless you pay for the Prime Membership. When I'm wanting to build a deck or get the new product, I don't like waiting a week to get it.

I thought only Vamps got marked up. Oh well my LGS is still selling all 4 for MSRP

Strange, i get them within a week. Then again I also only play 1 day a week (2 if I am very lucky) so maybe i am just more patient due to that. if I have to go a week or two without a new deck that i want to play, so be it. It just two game nights i don't have that deck.

We play once a week, a 2 game night where pod winners of the second game wins the promo's. So I build decks I wish to play the next week. So TCGPlayer for the ones i am missing. However, If it involves the new pre cons, then I prefer to have it in hand before I start modifying it, so I can see how it feels. I like to have it all sleeved up and ready for when the singles come in. Will proxy and gold fish the deck while i wait.
While the LGS I buy from seems to mark up some of the decks the prices don't seem to out there and are comparable to the big box stores if you total all of the decks, however they offer a deal if you buy the box set which essentially discounts the cheapest deck
I have looked at wal-Mart since and everyone I've looked at has been sold out of vampires though even back in the jeleva days I still came across one periodically on the shelf at walmart but I probably stop by walmart more often than most as I would be picking up my roommate from work, so keep your eyes open and good luck
Since the price markup usually comes from value and demand disparity between the precon decks from each set (e.g. the store has to buy all four at a time, one deck doesn't sell while another sells out immediately, so they modify prices so they're not sitting on hundreds of cat decks), Here's a couple of options that may help if you can't find single decks at MSRP:
- You can ask your local store if you could just buy the deck you want minus the expensive card. I did that with the Jevala deck when it came out, got the whole thing minus True-Name Nemesis for like $10.
- You could buy a case of all four for MSRP. You get the most cards from this but obviously not everybody wants to spend so much money at once. Still, it's an option if you insist on getting the decks for MSRP and you can't find them individually.
I'm just happy about this not being a common ocurrence outside of the US.
Think again. Here in NZ, my LGS is selling Teferi's Protection as a single for $40, and the price of that particular deck is rising. I have another LGS run by a much better guy, who only wants to do well by his friends. But he's definitely not the norm.

Oh, that sucks. Here in Spain(Or at least where I live) there are no big retail stores that sell MTG product, but most LGS have the Commander decks at MSRP(At least 1 of them ordered only the ones needed to cover reserves though). Heck, one of them was selling the Kaalia precon at MSRP 2 years ago.
I'd heard of LGS's around me selling the Breya and Atraxa precons for $75-85 apiece last year. Absolutely criminal if you ask me, and it's likely to happen with the Edgar Markov deck this year.
Teferis Protection is like $35 here and vampires deck is $55 already and sold out so it'll be at least $60 come restock. Reminds me of atraxa last year (which I luckily got for msrp) and that's more then $100 here now

This is like 2013's Grixis all over again. (With true-name Nemesis)
