A discussion about Havengul Lich turned naturally to comparing it to Necrotic Ooze. We had some difficulty justifying the Lich over the Ooze, considering the extra mana investment and similar function.
I think most combos to be achieved by Lich that the Ooze can't do would rely on controlling two creatures with the same ability. Ooze can get that with a Kiki-Jiki in the graveyard, though, so let's aim for a combo Lich can pull off that Ooze can't using the same cards. (With no extra cards that Lich doesn't need for its combo.)
For the sake of argument, let's say you can have as much mana as you need, but an opponent has just landed Leyline of the Void, so no re-casting Triskelion forever.
Considering Ooze can't cast creatures from opponents GYs, I find it a weird comparison.
Ooze gets activated abilities of creatures in all graveyards. Lich gets activated abilities of the creature(s) you cast from any graveyard. I think the comparison is apt.

Also Havengul Lich + Ornithopter(any 0 cmc creature) + Ashnod's Altar for infinite mana
Havengul Lich + Mana Echoes + Phyrexian Dreadnought is infinite creature etbs/ltbs/deaths/casts which is gg with a blood artist effect
I could probably think of one or two more but there arent many
Again, doesn't help with the leyline issue, but is a funny combo deck I used on MTGO that no one ever saw coming...
