Discussion About Creating A Commander Rules Discussion Subforum
Many years ago, the Commander mods brought together all of the banlist discussion together in one thread in order to keep the conversation in a central location, rather than flooding the main forum with a multitude of threads with a common theme. Throughout the years, as certain topics became a highlight of conversation they have split off into their own discussion thread (Such as the Emrakul, Primeval Titan, and Color Identity threads), such that banlist discussion could still take place in the main thread.
As always, we are always seeking ways to improve our forums, and facilitate the communications and topics that take place here. What worked then, may no longer be enough now. Several voices of the community have expressed a desire to be able to separate the discussions that take place within the main Banlist Thread. However, we still need to pay attention to the lessons of the past, and avoid the problems caused from a flood of threads in the main forum.
The Commander Moderator team has discussed these problems and have considered a few options to improve this experience. One of our potential solutions is that we have looked into the possibility of creating a unique subforum for the discussion of format specific rules. The purpose of this subforum would be to address the new needs of Rules Discussion, while avoiding returning to known problems of the past. We are now soliciting community feedback to gauge interest in this potential course of action, as well as soliciting any other ideas you may have to improve the experience in this matter.
What this proposed forum would be:
We would create a new subforum to the main forum, titled Commander Rules Discussion.
All existing MTGSalvation rules, and Commander Forum Rules, would apply to this subforum. Also, in the same vein as the banlist discussion thread, flaming, trolling, and other such misbehavior will still be held to a strict level. We expect all users to be able to discuss and participate in a rational and respectful manner.
Existing relevant [Official] threads, such as the banlist discussion, color identity, and tuck threads, would be moved into this subforum.
A number of the current [Official] threads, such as the banlist discussion, would be stickied to serve as the "general discussion" thread.
Any number of new threads, [SCD]s, [MCD]s, etc, can be created within the forum, in order to focus discussion on a specific aspect of the rules. We do not expect for there to be multiple [SCD]s on the same topic, so check first to see if there is already a recent thread on the topic you wish to discuss.
1v1 Formats and other Variant format rules are also welcome for discussion, though we ask that you please label it with the appropriate tag to help people identify your thread more easily.
Any Rules discussion thread created in the main forum would be moved to the Commander Rules Discussion forum.
What this proposed forum would NOT be:
A place to get rulings, or answers to rules questions. Those still belong in the Rulings Forum.
Please discuss your thoughts on this proposed change here, as well as any other ideas you have to improve the banlist discussion experience. We are always looking for ways in which to improve the forums, so if you have ideas please always feel free to share them in the helpdesk thread, or to PM any moderator.
Can we preemptively ban all discussion of Sol Ring? Or at least confine it to one thread so those of us who find the wedge issue tiresome can avoid it?
If people are sick of reading about stuff just stop taking part. You have 100% control over what you read. Simic Ascendancy isn't going to get banned just because you didn't tell someone to shut up on the internet.
Our intent is to give each card on or off the list its own SCD thread, as well as create additional official threads to streamline discussion. Hopefully, that will keep conversations more focused than they can be currently, as well as give users more freedom to participate in what matters to them while simultaneously avoiding the dead horse thread.
Because we don't want to rush into this if we have misgauged the community desire for something of this magnitude. Undoing all the work that will go into creating this will be harder than simply creating the sub. We also are still working on a few sticky threads as well as starter threads.
I think after all that's happened in the past few days, we need a rules subforum now more than ever. Focusing ALL the discussion on the banlist in a single thread has caused a lot of frustration and miscommunication on both sides (with a lot of scattered arguments on various cards and ideologies thrown about). I can see the subforum (and more specifically the SCD on banned cards and potentially bannable cards) working to spread out the heated debates to allow for more focused (and hopefully constructive) discussion on the banlist.
Some possible outcomes of this I hope to see:
1. There'll be an [SCD] for every card currently on the banlist. I think the less debated cards will mostly be left alone (i.e. - Power 9), and it'll result in a more focused discussion on the heated cards on the banlist.
2. [SCD]s for cards that people want to see banned. This category has the biggest potential of running out of control as there are TONs of cards that people want to see on the banlist (fast mana cards, abusive wins, lock-out feelbads), but even still, it should relieve a lot of confusion and chaos of putting all discussions in a single thread.
3. This is a suggestion, but as we'll potentially have [SCD]s to actually discuss cards for the banlist, instead of simply moving the current banlist discussion to the new forum, could you create a new official thread to discuss the philosophy of the banlist? It is obviously a very heated topic that is currently being discussed, but I believe if that if people are given the chance to start over on a focused discussion (without constantly throwing in card discussions inbetween), it might provide for a better environment for a constructive discussion. Perhaps even considering moving/combining the thread on Casual vs. Competitive as well.
The idea is that we'll have SCD's on every card on/off the list that people want to discuss, and discussion threads for broader topics as well, such as the philosophy, tuck rule, etc. All applicable existing threads will be moved to this sub, and the existing ban list thread will turn into a catch-all topical thread that can be about whatever.

Yep. We (the mods) will have a bunch of stuff in there to get the ball rolling, but we very much want this to be community-driven in the long run.
