Has anyone tried playing the 2013 precons agains the 2014 ones?
I'm thinking of getting a range of precons and not modifying them (or maybe just a little) in order to have decks that aren't too over the top but work well against eachother because as my playgroup has evolved we don't spend a lot of time buying and researching like we did in our younger days.
It sounds like it could be a nice fallback (balanced decks with different playstyles for different players) every now and then all while having decks to hand out to anyone interested in joining in
I played a few 5 players games where everyone had one of each of the 2014 Precons and they were a lot of fun, I'm wondering if this would be true if the mix was 2 2014 and 3 2013 decks and if anyone has tried something along those lines
I feel the 2013 decks were in general too much between two thoughts. They had two seperate gameplans that didn't always mesh particularly well, even if they did have some strong generals and a few all-star cards in them. This is something the Blue 2014 deck also kinda falls prey to compared to it's competitors. I'd probably start with the Prossh deck to test it out, that one's probably the strongest one straight out of the box and might hold it's own, but I have my doubts.

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
The 2014 precons were made by an EDH player and just looking at the land base shows you why. The 2013 precons were created with a few "good" cards for legacy with the idea that more than just EDH players would buy them. It is a terrible strategy, and I hope they continue away from the mentality of including a few good legacy cards in EDH decks. Also, when it comes to decks with more than one color more of the rares need to be in the landbase resulting in less good cards that are actually playable.
I have the Counterpunch 2011 deck, the Power Hungry 2013 deck, the Evasive Maneuvers 2013 deck, and the Build from Scratch 2014 deck. My buddy owns the Heavenly Inferno 2011 deck, the Eternal Bargain 2013 deck, and the Forged in Stone 2014 deck. We have played them against each other in small groups. Our experience (with the decks we have access to) is they are reasonably balanced among their published year, but the earlier sets don't play very well against the later sets. The 2011 and 2013 commanders are very strong, but you'll need to refine the deck lists a bit to make them competitive with the 2014 decks.
