...I would probably just suggest that play whatever seems fun, dodge the obvious staples and expensive modern/legacy bombs n' such for said general/color combo... and you still have some three to twelve thousand cards to pick from, depending of colors.
Most commander-goodies aren't that expensive anyway once you step out of the in-every-deck turf, especially if you build a general in a nontypical way and/or explore janky mechanics.
Plus, you get the giddy feeling when you play a card that everyone has to pick up and read. Let alone if you get to do it a lot.
Good questions to ask yourself: "What can do mostly the same thing as this staple, but in a more flavorful/synergistic way?" "What is the obvious/most done way of building this general, and what else can said colors do?" "Is there a mechanic in one set/block that I liked that would make for a curious deck?"
The card pool is deep for this lovely format, and it's so sad at times to see people going for the same powerful cards every time.
