So I saw this [Hythonia the cruel][/Hythonia the cruel]spoiled and thought "COMMANDER!" Yes, she's exspensive, and yes, there aren't many gorgons, but there are changelings, like [Moonglove changeling] [/Moonglove changeling], [Ghostly changeling] [/Ghostly changeling], and [Cairn wanderer] [/Cairn wanderer]. Even so, if you can pull off her monstrosity, which you probably could in EDH, shes basically a consistent board wipe on a stick. If any of your opponents kill her, she comes back and clears the board of everything but her. So a ny ideas of how you could build an EDH deck around her?
I think she is pretty damn ****ing awful and a complete waste of a mythic slot. Monstrosity is just such a bad mechanic, way way too overpriced for what you get out of it. Complete letdown IMO.
Well, at least she's better than Polukranos, so there's something for ya.
I honestly would had been happy with her if she had been G/B, because that would encompass all of the gorgons to date. Hopefully we'll get another G/B gorgon that isn't absurdly expensive as a commander.
Anyways, if you wanna try to build around her, then I would obviously just do big mana black. Coffers, mana doublers, healthy amount of artifact ramp, good mana sinks. Stuff like that.

If someone uses her, then this. All day long. But many of the cards for this are unlikely to be found with someone who lacks access to a better mono-black commander.
I think people are hating on her unnecessarily. I think she's a pretty decent commander. Black is arguably the best at generating ridiculous mana, and instant-speed wipes have always been very powerful. Also, at 7 power, she's got that nice 3-hit kill. She doesn't really shore up any weaknesses for black, but she does her job pretty well.
My issue with her isn't that she's weak, but that she's uninteresting to me. For black big-mana, I'd much prefer Geth, and for a board-wiper I'd much prefer child of alara. She's functional but bland.
I think it's silly to complain about "wasted mythic slots". There's always plenty of mythics that aren't playable in EDH, get over it. This card is plenty playable, just not very exciting.

Yeah, she competes with Geth as my monoblack commander of choice as well. I don't think she's a wasted slot, and I do find her interesting solely because she's a gorgon and I'd absolutely love to find a better gorgon commander. My only problem with her is that she isn't BG.

I mean, honestly, I wouldn't touch her as commander with a 10 foot pole. Just use Drana if you want big mana that wipes creatures. Or even Sheoldred would be better.

Those are both different, I mean let's be honest here. Drana snipes single creatures, Sheoldred is a constant Edict. This is a Plague Wind on a stick, and no matter how you slice it, that's unique. Especially with it being available at instant speed.
Yes, it's a bit slow. But as noted before, she does just fine in a Big Black Mana kind of strategy as a way to hold back other decks while working your way up to that Exsanguiate/Other MonoB Kill spell, so as a commander for those kinds of decks, she does just fine.
That said she'll never be a tier 1 general. Nor does she need to be.

K then onto the post at hand personally I think that any mono black general kind of forces you in the MBC archetype. I don't think she is the top tier when it comes to MBC generals out there but repeatable wraths can't be all that bad either...

Whoa, whoa, WHOA. Are you out of your mind? An instant speed boardwipe is worth 8 mana, and the fact that you'll have a 7/9 deathtouch after the fact is pure, delicious gravy. Sure, she's french vanilla prior to that wipe, but having her as a commander is like having a tank with thermo-nuclear missiles on hair-trigger in the command zone.
I've been excited since I confirmed for myself that the ability didn't say "play this ability as a sorcery". My plan is to play control for most of the game by killing everything and using hand disruption, then use her board wipe, equip with Lashwrithe and/or Fireshrieker, win.
As far as the "wasted mythic slot", there are two ways to think about it. A: I love playing janky EDH. Just love it. This is exactly that. I want a foil one. B: At least it's not a chase mythic that you need four of in Standard with a price that will shoot through the roof. All mythics should be this janky.

She's not at the top of my mono-black list, but I could definitely see her be pretty cool. Ramp up, use some nice discard spells to get rid of their removal, then drop her and get rid of their creatures. There you go, board's cleared!
Make sure you use Vedalken Orrery so you can keep mana up for wrath! And Conjurer's Closet lets you wrath every turn if you have the mana.
The tricky part is that besides her wrath, your deck is going to have to do a lot of heavy lifting on its own - it's not like Geth, where if you have enough mana the general can win you the game on its own.
As a connoisseur of fun, interesting matches, I still to this day have not been able to craft that "perfect deck"; the deck that I can play and have fun over time, doesn't get boring, but simultaneously is fun to play against. I honestly don't think it exists. It's like a unicorn. A ninja unicorn.

Implying a 7/9 Plague Wind can't win the game on its own?
Implying a 7/9 Plague Wind can't win the game on its own?
Correct. Some generals, like geth, arcum dagsson, Damia, Scion, Rhys, Drana, etc., can have the deck revolve around them, and lock up the game for you by sticking around a few turns (either via advantage from using abilities, or the ability to easily kill with general damage with little need for equipment). Hythonia gets you a one time plague wind, but besides that she's mostly vanilla; she may get one swing in easy after you activate her, but she probably can't kill someone without help, and she won't take over the game by herself.

Idk, i think she's a fantastic mbc commander. She costs six and has a decently sized butt and death touch. The monstrosity mechanic is just an added bonus in my opinion. She also has the benefit of staying in the graveyard and being reanimated and wrathing the board. Having a board wipe in the command zone is never something to downplay.
I agree. We should all only play g/x decks because they are the most objectively fun and anyone who disagrees does not know the truth about EDH. Everyone should just play their decks because interaction beyond high fiving about how many land are in play is unfun and equivalent to casting Stasis while kicking puppies. I for one will never play with anyone who casts tutors, removal spells, blue cards, things I arbitrarily decide I don't like but will probably cast myself later.

Yes, it is good to note that with even one Caged Sun, Gauntlet of Power, or Nirkana Revenant, you could cast Plague Wind 3 times. Granted, you wouldn't be doing much else, but it's nothing to sneeze at.

On the other hand, it's hard to see how she'll supplant other 'big mana' generals like Drana, or other board wipe generals like Kagemaro.
