Yea, local news is kind of getting to the point where I question if they should start phasing out given how much the internet has sort of taken over for news coverage. I wonder if its just sort of a matter of time.

That kind of loses the local part. Human interest stuff may not really matter and national stories are covered better elsewhere, but there are plenty of local issues that still need attention.

Nothing new. Back in high school, a bunch of kids from my school were in Chicago for an event featuring kids from schools from all over the midwest, and one of the local kids asked what state Iowa was in. Iowa, of course, is one of the states directly west of Illinois. Making it more ironic, this was an event for academic honors kids.
What the hell prompted the large buy out on Divine Intervention, I know it was only printed in Legends, but last time i looked it was under 30 dollars...now it's like close to 100

I believe its on the reserve list. Essentially anything playable on that list especially the rares on the list have a much higher chance to encounter a buyout.

I get that from time to time a card spikes, but that's normally due to being in some deck from a major event, so I guess in this case it's just collectors/investors hedging their bets?

There have been more investors in magic that go after the reserve list in the last few years. If you look at the reserve list from like three years ago a good portion of the list has gone up in value between twice and four times the value it used to be.
I think it was about three years ago that Bazaar & Moat went from $300 price tags up. Bazaar jumped again in the last year or so. Nether Void & Abyss went from low $200s to $800+. These of course are some of the more chase cards of the reserve list who have always had fairly high pricetags of the legal commander playable cards but still it doesn't change that kind of across the board the reserve list cards have just been going up.
It has been 5 years now since I got a LP Tabernacle for $300 on trade credit and it has jumped in price to 10x what I got it for. Even then though, I don't really care what the value of my cards is worth so much as what it costs me to acquire them if I don't have them now. All their current price tags really mean is that I won't be getting more copies. Its really funny though because I was like...... really close to getting an Imperial Recruiter instead of the tabernacle back then as they were about the same cost. I guess I picked right.

Man, when I got into playing Nether Void was like 70-80$ and I thought that was pricey...
EDIT: Even the Collector's Editions have jumped up
Everything RL from the first couple years of the game has gone insane. Both finance guys and players have realized that supply on those is low and the right time to pick it up has always been a couple years ago. The fact that anyone playing as a kid when those were recent is now an adult and likely has a higher income doesn't help the situation any. There's also a theory (with some concrete examples) that a lot of it is coming from early cryptocurrency investors who made a ton of money when that got big. There's lots of money floating around and a small fixed supply.
I have a majority of the RL stuff out there and I picked up a fair amount of it relatively recently - I paid around $700 for my Tabernacle a couple years ago, for example. It's at the point where I wouldn't be able to justify it if I was starting from scratch and I spend a lot more on this game than the average player.

Unfortunately I think there are two big elements in the price jumps of the reserve list cards
1) People are now investing in magic who don't even play the game. These people primarily invest in the reserve list cards because they are seen as more stable than investments in specific cards that can and will be reprinted but to some degree there is also people investing in sealed product as I think that side is a little more stable than the secondary market for singles of non reserve list cards.
2) Commander. Lets face it, this is a popular format and a LOT of these old reserve list cards have sort of unique effects. Some of the reserve list like dual lands and tabernacle are played in legacy but overall the number of them that actually get played there are still quite limited. Commander has caused a LOT of cards to take on prices where they used to not have really any worth before.
If not for commander, I guarantee you I wouldn't own essentially any reserve list cards. I am very lucky in that I bought a bunch of reserve list cards in the last 3-6 years and since the last huge jumps I have essentially put the breaks on buying them.

Yeah, it can be pretty depressing hearing people talk past one another. I understand it though. I used to be the kind of person that would get outraged about everything. I had this attitude about me that if you didn't understand why I was outraged and why my outrage was justified then you were just an idiot. That was seriously unhelpful.
Nowadays, I just want to have an honest dialogue with people, and if things remain civil I'm happy to disagree with people because hopefully those instances will shed light on the situation and everyone involved might learn something. Communicating with text like this can be challenging though since sometimes people can miss the tone of your message and put emphasis in places it doesn't belong. I think a lot of this kind of dialogue relies on people being honest and many posters have found themselves disenfranchised because they've been the recipient of dishonest behavior.

It is interesting to note that sometimes the same price trends are not found in markets in Europe or Japan.
While I was in Japan (3 months ago) I was able to get a lightly played Survival of the Fittest for the US equivalent of $40 with tax included.
Since then the europe average has crept up to 70 euros but it still isn't where prices are in the US.
I remember seeing a Survival of the fittest for like $6 NZD at my local LGS a couple of years ago. I picked up jank instead and have regretted it since. Regardless of the condition it would've paid for itself.
I am somewhat lucky that I have been playing commander as long as I have not to mention that I buy wayyyyyy too much stuff because I have like 4x sets of a LOT of useful cards at this point in time just because at one point I needed another so I got another.
Nowadays I just randomly buy up a bunch of copies of stuff that I think is too cheap. I think it was only like last summer I noticed I could get The Gitrog Monster at like $1-2 per copy so I bought 4-6 copies thinking holy crap that is going up soon. Its up to $8 already.
Just the other day I was ordering things and noticed I could get Kefnet the Mindful at $0.50 a copy. I bought another 4 copies I think just because I like the card, and its a mythic, and really its not half bad in this format. Realistically I suspect that if you give him another 2-4 years he will be at least $5-$10 each.
I guess this is just me on a random tangent. Essentially all I am saying is when I see good cards that seem too cheap I buy up a good stock so I never need to buy them again.

I've stopped picking up multiple copies of things (except by accident), but this is otherwise true of me too. I wouldn't have half of my collection if it wasn't for the fact that I've been picking up EDH and legacy cards since 09/10 or so. I'll also pick up things that I think I might want someday if they're a good price, whether that's new cards or older cards that have fallen out of favor.

Generally speaking though, like if any big expensive commander viable cards get reprinted in a masters set or something I usually jump on getting more copies. I owned 2 Mana Crypts and then they reprinted it and I bought two more while they were $50. That card has already rebounded well above that. When Mana Drain got reprinted I went from 1 copy to 3 or 4 (I cant even remember) once it dropped to the mid $50s range.
I guess this last one I didn't really do much for though. I already owned 2 Imperial Recruiters and realistically for commander purposes I just don't play enough red to need more than that.

I might have to grab a Drain before they start going the way of Crypts. They won't get as high, obviously, but it's nice seeing them hover around $50.
In other news, I saw a throwaway comment on Reddit when Xantcha, Sleeper Agent got spoiled that said something to the effect of, "Well, you could make infinite mana with the old Worldgorger Dragon combo" and I figured I'd give that a shot. Started really putting my nose to the grindstone on it today, and I'm not sure it's any good. I'm playing all of the realistically playable rituals in an attempt to maybe power out a quick combo, but I'm also running Kiki-Jiki + Zealous Conscripts in the event I get blown out. Figure if I go for a quick combo, I won't have much committed to the board in the event it all gets exiled.
The new C18 structures are notoriously low in value this year, and TCG Player has the findings with the Jund deck already available for $24 unopened, and the Izzet one at $28. Yuriko is the only card above $10. The set dropped a week ago.
This is brutal beyond words right now. I feel bad for local stores.

"I hope to have such a death... lying in triumph atop the broken bodies of those who slew me..."
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
Yeah one of my LGS stores was selling a whole set for $110. I'm guessing they sold it so low as to move A LOT of product but get minimal profit from each sale.
So far the low value of the cards making up the decks doesn't appear to have greatly impacted initial sales at least in the local market. Locally, they have sold well in the game stores, while mass retailers like Wal-Mart and Target have mostly sold out their initial stock, with the Izzet and Jund decks being the first to disappear from the shelves.
I expect the sales will sharply drop off from this point, though, which is okay by me, as that means I will probably be able to get a good deal purchasing the dozen or so cards I'd like to have more of than I got by just purchasing the set (mostly a couple of the lieutenant commanders, and Nesting Dragon, which has been very, very strong in Windgrace).
Well, if you want to speculate on a product, this might be the occasion. Unique printings in Commander products have historically done a pretty good job staying unique and driving up the value of the decks over time. People freaking out about lower value reprints are driving down demand, but part of the lower value of the reprints is that many of the cards have already been reprinted in other supplemental products, especially commander products.
If I counted correctly, 59 are new cards, and 134 have appeared in previous commander products, and the rest are first-time commander reprints. More cards in these products are commander re-reprints than first time reprints, including some of the most valuable reprints. 10/19 of the reprints currently worth more than $1 were already printed in a commander product. The issue isn't the decks got worse, it's that the decks got the same. And if that makes these decks cheap, it should drop the market value on older decks by having the same cards... but it doesn't. The cards getting reprinted go down, but the cards unique to those decks still go up. I didn't crunch the numbers all the way, but a quick glance at prices and decklists for older commander decks tells me 3 things: they're all above msrp for sealed products, they're all holding that value or trending upwards, and maybe most importantly, they all have more than $24 in just the cards that were designed for that product.
So the long-term question seems simple to me: are the new cards as fun as previous years? I think yes. I think these decks will climb in value just like every commander deck.
