The other problem is that its a lot of work to jump through hoops to try to play and win by turn 3 with it where as something like Tron assembles by turn three a lot more reliably. There really are a ton of sweet decks out there that mostly don't get played much because there are more consistent decks that regularly post tournament results.
Just because a deck isn't one of the 10 you see all the time doesn't mean its not a cool or sweet deck. Those decks can win plenty too so as long as you don't mind that your win percentage might not be quite what those other decks are I don't think there is anything wrong with playing something else. Especially if you get more enjoyment from those other decks.
There is also something to be said when nobody else really knows what is in your list or how to sideboard against it.
It's the nature of the format... or rather, the game if the general lack of 60-card casual formats is any indicator. I mean it took EDH to literally rewrite a format structure from the ground-up along with making the format on the "clunkier" side so optimal streamlining isn't very optimal to begin or end with in order to establish a generally accepted casual format and even that didn't stop a competitive variant from forming its own subsection.
It's also harder for people digest a lower win-rate for something they know they need to spend in (regardless of whether you can get your money back later or not). I played janky, fun decks in f2p online card games with full acceptance of subpar win rates because I know it costs me nothing, but it's hard to say that of MTG because even if the cards are on the cheaper end, they still cost some plus I still need to put the effort them to find them in the first place... and the effort to sell them off later if I decide to.
It's also a major reason why some new players are terrified of EDH - I mean I already had a pretty established hoard by the time I came across the format, so EDH as a format became sort of like a f2p game of its own to me, although that's partially on my laziness to expel my hoard to begin with. Throw in the leisurely rate of the format, even buying costlier cards to improve EDH decks feels much more enjoyable on its own because you know you can take your own pace and it isn't a necessity.
So this sucks. 5 weeks ago I ordered a Leyline of the Void off Tcgplayer. Like a dumbass I forgot to update my address. Well long story short my card is lost in the mail system now. I got a refund so I'm not out the cash, but the price has gone up almost $10 so it will cost me more if I want to take a second attempt at a copy.
About last week I was starting to wonder if this thread would stay silent for a month, but guess it's a week short after all.

I go to the movies to be enteratined and I know full well that I spend money with no expectation of anything in return other than 1-3 hours of entertainment. I look at magic that way in a lot of ways as well. I regularly put money into said game but I also generate enjoyment from building and playing those decks. There is also the possibility to sell said collection later if I want in magic which is saying something.
I do feel bad for new players in magic playing against me. I know how daunting it can be at least in EDH they are likely to be the last one I come after and they can gang up on me if they want (and they usually do).

Its likely that a lot of the expected modern cards that didn't get reprints in ultimate masters jumped. Manamorphose for example is a card I bought a playset of probably a month ago not really thinking about a potential ultimate masters reprint and that card has jumped 30-50% since then.
Leyline of the Void sees a LOT of modern sideboard play and its price tag definately reflects that its been a while since it got a reprint. That said, they might be waiting for another core set to reprint it since its a cycle of card where only 3 of them really have a price tag. That cycle is also not that good in draft, so it makes sense to not print it in an expensive draft set.
Well my issue is that I need the Guildpact version for my cube. I already have the M11 one in there, this is strictly an upgrade. But yeah, I have watched the price of the card fluctuate up and down.

I never noticed that the character in your signature was holding Magic cards until just now ISB.
Unless you are looking at it closer its easy to miss that. I had Kelzam make it for me a few years ago. I think originally he was holding a book or magazine or something.

Got the jackpot pull from one of my UMA box toppers - Liliana of the Veil. Platinum Emperion is less exciting but I really couldn't lose after Lili.
Plural on box toppers......
Congrats on pulling one good one at least though. As a random side note some people will do Madcap Experiment into Platinum in modern so I guess there is still valid use there. Some people will play it in commander as well but I think its kind of clunky and not so impressive there.

I know I was all about Emperion until I realized that it doesn't stop Commander damage. I stopped playing it almost immediately, and offloaded it when the Madcap Experiment deck became a thing and the price spiked.

Yeah, picked up a couple boxes to draft with my group. They typically have enough value that I can unload things afterwards and recoup the majority of it if there's nothing I want to keep (even if I've gotten lazy about this). I usually just grab one, but this set looked like a nice draft set and there was a convenient confluence of eBay deal and year end bonus so #2 was an impulse buy.
Emperion is an entertaining card at the very least. My group is more likely than average to end a game with finite, non-commander damage so it might even see some use. We're also likely to hang onto removal, so it probably won't stick in the deck for very long.

I'm very pleased with Ultimate Masters, but not for the typical reason - I liked seeing the community literally agree that the MSRP was blatantly high in terms of actual action and not just words. Generally speaking most sellers just went below (there are always exceptions across the globe, but you can see the visible agreeable unity to go below for UMA) and even when the rest of the set was previewed to be pretty dang good (especially considering the typical bulk of goodness was already released prior to day 1), sellers didn't really bother jacking up prices (again with minor exceptions around).
Even the pre-order prices for singles showed a pretty dramatic hit from the get-go. Sure, you don't have to explain to me that we're going to return to square one once time passes (especially that when this is the "last" Masters set), I know how the market works, but I'm infinitely pleased that the market still behaved the way it did for UMA. If UMA happened 2 years or so ago, people would be stubbornly refusing to drop prices on "last" Masters hype and they fact that they want to drive the price even more ridiculously up in the future rather than let it drop and recover naturally.
Sure, some parts of the market still moved unfavorably (especially on unreprinted cards), but it was still a great contrast to how much the hype often made the already insufficient impact of Masters even worse for the market rather quickly. On paper we always complain how WotC keeps bashing on consumer confidence recently but in action it almost feels like we were overconfident prior to the bashing instead and said bashing finally cooled the Secondary Market to operate more reasonably instead. Sure, WotC still did stupid things like MSRP that gave them bad PR, but even that became sort of a contrast to how good it was to see the Secondary Market operate nicely.
I need to remember to pick up my own box from my LGS (who also sold below MSRP, not as cheap as the best deals online, but hey it was reasonable enough for me to support them). Usually logic dictates I should draft it, but I really just want to open it to mirror how I opened MM1 boxes (I only drafted my one MM2 box back then and ever since then I didn't like the direction Masters were heading due to both WotC and the Secondary Market so I stopped buying packs save for 1 EMA pack). The Masters ride might have been quite a trainwreck, but UMA actually feels like a pleasant way to send it off, even if it did take bashing consumer confidence to attain it.
That being said on a personal level, my apathy to the game overall probably is still pretty high at the moment, which is why I'm still lazy and unmotivated to have not picked up my box on the first day immediately.
Interesting. Honestly I would like something to shake the format up a little. I feel like we have been just kind of playing it safe with the banned list for the last few years. I am trying to remember the last thing that happened on the banned list and the last thing that comes to mind would probably be the unban of P Hulk which was what??? 2 years ago now?
(I don't count that brief silver boarder allocation stunt)

The format doesn't need to be shaken up. WotC already does that enough when they make God awful commander cards.
Welp. Turned out my box was one of those fabled double-Liliana boxes (regular + box topper edition). It's going to sound brag-gish no matter how I word it, but I really do find it ironic to get this box considering I sold my Innistrad Lilianas (which I never really used since I opened them way back then) last year so I finally could get my foil Vampiric Tutor. Only opened 1 foil rare in the box, but thankfully it was Phyrexian Tower.
The box is like one of the oddest curveballs - in my ideal situation (of laziness of just opening what I want directly) I'd get Demonic Tutor as my topper and Phyrexian Altar was my most desired rare foil. Not complaining I got generally better value than that (since it could most definitely be worse), but when it's sort of a parody to a series of deals I did almost exactly one year ago it's almost baffling.
Either way, it was a good closure for me with regards to the Masters Series (which didn't amount to much sealed product-wise considering it was 2 MM1 boxes, 1 MM2 box and 3 EMA packs I actually really ever opened in the entire series prior to this last UMA box).
My friend got two boxes with store credit at my LGS. Opened one, and the topper was a Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, and the two best pulls were Karn + Foil Karn. I, on the other hand, snagged the 5 cards I wanted from the set for $45.
In other news, I had so much fun building my last casual deck, which was Nissa, Vastwood Seer Nissa Tribal, that I think I'm going to try again with another deck. This time it's Brigid, Hero of Kinsbaile Kithkin tribal. I wanted to do another mono-colored deck, since it would be pretty inexpensive, and Kithkin seemed like a good choice because I didn't play back when Kithkin was an insane standard deck. My friend actually took the deck to a States tournament years ago, and he seemed to think he was the only person playing it.
