I am getting an Xbox for my kids for Christmas. I have no idea what that means except that it's a video game system and $350 seems to be the target price at most of the stores. Any advice?

There's a stupid deal at Kohl's where you can get it for like $250 Friday

That would mean going to Kohls. I refuse to do Black Friday anything and Kohls is a terrible place - it's like a department store for people who think that khaki shorts, tucked in shirts, and Crocs are okay.
EDIT: I'll look on Monday to get it online though. I can handle that.
(Also, thanks for the tip. Despite my crust I do appreciate it)

You can threaten to take it away to make them do stuff. My parents used that to good effect with me. They even made me do enough chores to pay for my Super Nintendo which took months. They'll be going to retirement homes when the time comes.
The console is sort of non-negotiable. Not sure why but they both insist on Xbox ONE.
And yes, I fully plan on manipulating them with it... I am losing power very quickly and realize that I need to up my leverage game.
Because kids are sheep to the shepherd of popular opinion, and their friends likely all have or want an X-Bone. The quality of the system and games are largely irrelevant, leading to the paradoxical situation where highly praised Nintendo games are owned largely by adults or kids that aren't allowed to choose for themselves.

Probably. But you know who cares even less than they do about their video games? Me. If I had my choice I would go with the Wii U, but I've just heard so many things about how it's failing and isn't getting supported any more.

Oh, yeah. I'm definitely not suggesting going against the Hive Mind. In the age of online entertainment, getting the other console means they might not be able to play with their friends at all. The Wii U is freaking awesome even if they never released another game; having bought it for myself as an adult, I feel no regret in my purchase. But if you want to give your kids something expensive to play with while wishing they're friends would join them, you can just pass them some magic cards.

They have plenty of MTG cards already... And they're getting a recon for Christmas from Santa already.
It's weird though. They are at a weird age (6 and 8) where a Wii would be perfectly fine since the younger one is still pretty oblivious to what other kids are doing. The older one is already starting to figure out that he is a weirdo and older kids pick on him for it. We are also moving them schools next month so I want to make sure I get him the most invisible system that other kids won't think twice about when they see it. I suck at this though. I was always the kid wearing awful clothes and getting ridiculed for my general lack of social acumen. I'd like to help fix some of that in my branch of the family tree.
Maybe this goes without saying, but don't forget an extra controller. And a charging station for said controllers is cheap and handy also.
Yup. I was looking at all the different bundles and not one of them came with 2 controllers. Like, where's the "I plan on having friends over" bundle?
The bad thing with most modern developers/publishers/whoever-is-making-this-decision is that graphical fidelity is so high, making split screen "not cost effective enough". That's why practically no games even have Split Screen anymore.

Oath of the Gatewatch; the set that caused the competitive community to freak out over Basic Lands.
The target market for an Xbox is screaming obscenities at the Asian kids beating them in Call of Duty. This person does not need a second controller until he breaks one during a ragequit.

I'm trying to convince them that a Wii U is the way to go with the very simple and true argument of, "You need to share and if all the games you want are 1 player then you get half as much time playing."
They seem to be warming to the Wii U, especially since they recently announced that Minecraft will probably be on there.
I guess the "get a job and buy it your damn self" doesn't work when they're 8, does it? I feel tour pain though. My daughter wants the handheld Wii, whatever that is. (Yes I know Google is a thing. No I haven't done it yet.)

Tell them you will buy them a second game when they finish Bloodborne.
