We have had some requests to have an offtopic thread for users to chat and have some fun with other regulars to the commander forums. I decided to open this up and sort of see how it goes so be on good behavior and it might stay around.
Some general rules for this page:
Dos:
Have fun
Chat and get to know your fellow commander contributors.
Follow forum rules
Donts:
Break the rules. We will not accept that something was being jokingly discussed. Everything you say will be taken seriously by the moderators so do not jokingly name call or break any rules.
Move discussion from other threads here. Banlist discussion is one of the biggest offenders. Please try not to push conversation between multiple threads. Keep it fun and keep that stuff out of here please.
Discuss topics of sexual nature. This sort of topic can make a lot of people feel awkward. Its also really not much of a PG 13 based topic. Please refrain from having discussions on sexual based topics such as: sexual preference (homosexual, straight, bisexual), sexual modification (transgender), or really just random discussions of yourself or others having sex. These topics easily make people feel awkward about posting here and the nature of these discussions just doesn't really need to happen here.
This is intended to be a fun environment so if you cant follow the rules I will either hand out warnings / infractions and or close this thread down completely. That being said feel free to talk about video games, movies, life problems, how lame your family is... ehhh whatever.
My hope is that this sort of a thread will be a nice, fun thing for everyone. I think it could be nice to have this so we will see how it turns out. Worst case I can always hit abort and archive it lol.
EDIT: well lets start the offtopic stuff now, anyone else play League of Legends? I just sort of started getting into it a bit more of late. I only get a few games in a day but it is fun. Feel free to look me up ingame ISBPathfinder again. I just hit lvl 18 like last night but I like playing Ashe a lot.
I heard DOTA 2 was in beta... isn't steam doing it? I am sure it will be interesting to see how different it is from LoL. Let me know if you ever want to try it out bob. I wouldnt mind a few more people to play it with.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
Dota 2 is in beta, it is being developed by Valve (they own steam), who have hired Icefrog (DOTA's maintainer for the last... 7? years...).
Blizzard Dota has not yet been released to the best of my knowledge, but I haven't logged into SC2 in a while. It will be an officially released custom map mod for Starcraft 2, pitting heroes from all three of their major brands in battle. Expected release date, last I heard, will be either with, or shortly before the Heart of the Swarm expansion. This may have been delayed further than I expected, since Blizzard is not hosting Blizzcon this year, in order to focus more on their games.
I keep forgetting to sign up for the Dota 2 Beta, so hopefully I remember to take their survey on steam tonight when I get home.
Either way, I'll probably join it when it launches. My biggest gripe with SoTIS and HON is the distinct lack of Pit Lord. =D
I dont have starcraft so I might end up missing out on blizzard's version. However I can see some potential issues with that just from the aspect that it will be harder to get balancing and such issues addressed since it will be a blizz official game type that they need to maintain.
I am not so knowledgeable with acronyms in gaming as I used to be... what are SoTIS and HON?

I'd recommend picking up Starcraft 2 when you can. Alone, it's a great game with fun single player, and can be a fun strategy game as multiplayer too. Also, with the depth Blizzard puts into its mapmaking tool, the number of custom maps created for it is simply astounding. During tech week, blizzard was offering the game for $15 as a digital download. Physical copies are still pretty pricey, and the current DL page only says SALE with no price tag on it. Shouldn't be too hard to pick up a copy at an opportunistic price.
HON and SoTIS are two more DOTA spawns.
HON (Heroes of Newearth) is a standalone game by S2 that branched off from DOTA to have a stable dedicated engine and stat tracking. It was initially a purchase, but with the threat from DOTA 2, which promises better support than they could ever give, they gone to a free-to-play system with purchasables in store (different hero skins, annoucer voices on kills, etc). http://heroesofnewerth.com/spotvid_splash.php
SoTIS (Storm of the Imperial Sanctum) was the first major DOTA port into Starcraft 2. It's made and maintained by individuals, and my first attempts with it showed me that it was still unrefined compared to other systems. That was a long time ago, but I haven't picked it back up. Supposedly it's quite nice now. http://www.playsotis.com/
I expect the Blizzard DOTA to actually be fairly polished overall, but it will probably be lacking depth. I don't think its meant to be a serious competition, rather just an available side game to get a fix for that genre. Adding more breadth to SC2 so to speak. I expect it to be low on the updates and extra heroes, though balanced.
In terms of timeline, everyone sports DOTA as the original (it's not, just the biggest explosion). When DOTA started up, it was termed an AOS-type of map, based on a SC1 custom map called "Aeon of Strife," themed around a SC1 backstory war. DOTA was introduced in WC3 custom maps, and was the most successful AOS type map, due primarily to the most updates. There are also a lot of hacked versions of the early maps floating around. Eventually, the addition of a website with official latest releases allowed them to eliminate spoofers and competition. During the later points of DOTA, S2 released HON, as a way to provided stat tracking, have a dedicated platform, and reduce leavers and other undesirable play habits. LoL formed around the same time. The other reason for these was to provide a DOTA style map (later given the abbreviation MOBA, Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) off of the proprietary Warcraft Platform. SC2 game out next, and of course many people wanted to capitalize on the new market and SoTIS won out there. Now Valve has hired Icefrog and is making DOTA2 to take the market of players away from Blizzard.
I played a few of the very early DOTA maps, and may even still have some of them around (balance issues rampant), then have a big empty blank, and then picked back up more seriously after it managed to get to be a bit more official, and they locked down their map. My friend bugged me into playing HoN, which I didn't like as much (a bit different pacing), but is a fairly good clone, which then added a bunch of its own ideas. I haven't played either in ages though, so I likely suck now.
Wow, that is a welth of gaming knowledge you have there bob. I was aware of League of Legends and DOTA 2 in the mix as well as the original DOTA but most of the rest of that is news to me.
Is there any reason in particular you never picked up on League of Legends as it seems like you play / have played most of the others.

Mainly because I was playing with friends, so we either always had DOTA or HoN on hand. Anytime I wanted to just play a few games, since I already have those available, I never got around to DLing LoL; although I hear it has made its own diversions from DOTA, and some of them sound rather interesting.
I suppose that is understandable. It has been a while since I have played DOTA so it is hard for me to really place some of the changes to LoL however I do like LoL a lot more after playing it a bit. I feel like they stay on top of balancing as well as adding new features regularly.
The talant trees and rune system opens up sort of a personalization feel to characters as well. It has been fun so far but you definately feel the difference when being low level due to the restraint of lower level runes and less points for your trees. However it isnt real hard to level up and it sort of makes you appreciate the different setups more I think.

used to play DOTA back in the day, so when I was informed of LOL, I naturally jumped on board.
Favorite chr is probably Ryze as he can hit like a brick, though of late I've really been enjoying Caitlyn and Ashe for their lane sustainability.
Trynd has got to get nurfed; endless rage too powerful. -.-
Ooooo I love Caitlyn and Ashe. I only got to play Caitlyn for a week when she was free however I intend to save up to buy her as my next major character purchase. Currently I am saving my points for new runes for when I hit lvl 20. I am sick of having half assed runes so I am going to trick out my Ashe play first then work on unlocking Caitlyn.
I hate playing against Ryze... he owns Ashe when he locks me down

Seems we have a fair amount of gamers (besides Magic, I mean) on the forums. So,
What do you typically play?
I typically play RPG's (role-playing games). Recently, both Dragon Age games and Elder Scrolls: Morrowind/Skyrim have been my go-to games. I like having a customizable avatar of myself in the game world, and in these games, what race you play as definitely changes how you interpret the world.
I'm not a fan of MMO's, 'cause I don't need to have someone slowing me down in game, and if the game costs money/month, I'm out. I'm poor enough as is, thank you :p.
Grew up on Nintendo systems, starting with the original, still have em all, and they still work. Have a $40 LED projector that works perfectly fine for those old graphics, and I play Battletoads on my ceiling. I don't actually own any of the current gen systems though, oddly enough. Probably because of WoW.
Otherwise, been pretty good on any of the Blizzard games, though I played very little of diablo 1. Mainly SC, D2, WC3, SC2 (from beta), and D3 (beta!). I also played WoW, and have successfully quit... for the 3rd time now.
Liked the Final Fantasy series a lot, especially FF4(2 US), FF6 (3 US), and 10 (though saddened by the loss of freedom). I like other well written RPG's, I've enjoyed a decent amount of The Witcher. I have a fair collection of various PS2, and GC games.
Tend to not do so much with FPS'. Usually tends to go strategy->Comp, RPG->console/comp.
I recently bought a laser tag system for my house (It was on sale, don't judge me!).
As far as card games go, I tried Spellfire way back when, but I was young, so I never really saw the balance issues other people talk about now. That said, all my spellfire cards also fit inside a ziplock bag, so I guess I wasn't terribly invested. I also played some Starwars CCG, apparently there are multiple versions though, so all I can say is that it came out with Episode 2, and dear gosh, even I saw the balance issues. Had a blast in college with a Pirate themed card game, Seven Seas. Local store decided to get rid of them, and gave me a box of precons for something like $20. It was a lot of fun until I discovered that boarding was really useless, and modified a deck to abuse my cannons, and then the game wasn't so fun for everyone else anymore. For a while I collected those little platic pop-out pirate games (that come with those tiny dice), but never got to play it. I just liked the ships. Played the Beta of The Spoils, thought it was interesting. Local store at the time gave me their beta set (they weren't using it), I still have all of the unopened packs; no one ever wanted to play.
Tried DnD a few times, usually ended in failure. The one good/organized group I found, my character fell into a blob of man-eating jello and I died. Then half the group had to quit because they were in ROTC and apparently they aren't allowed to have fun.
Currently I'm mainly playing EDH in magic... and revisiting old classics, especially the ones I missed, as long as they aren't worth 3 and a half fortunes on ebay (looking at you Shantae).
I cant wait for it to be released. I think they are taking a lot of good things from WoW and leaving off a lot of things I didnt like about it such as new equipment releases all the time. The pvp experience is going to be really along the lines of what I wish WoW had been. I always hated that I needed better gear to even attempt anything good in wow...

I just hit level 20 in LoL. Picked it up about 6 weeks ago. Seem to mostly have a thing for tanky dps, the one major exception being Talon.
Otherise, just playing some KOA:R (see Other Games thread), and waiting for Mass Effect 3.
By the way, does anyone know whether there's any truth to the rumours I heard about previous PS3 exclusives being released on Steam? I want to play Infamous and Demon/Dark Souls, damn it!
Yeah, the laser tag system was on steep discount, so I went ahead and got 6 guns for the system, I have yet to test them, but I'm hoping to invite over my nephews this weekend and have at least a 4 player match or so, if not the full 6. http://battle-tag.us.ubi.com/
Supposedly each receiver can handle 8 players, and you can daisy chain receivers to handle up to 40 players. That was a bit out of my pricerange, but this deal had the starter kit of 2 guns, receiver, +extras for cheaper than the typical price of 2 extra guns... so I have a few spare receivers now. I figure when I go get my masters, it should also be fun in a dorm/apartment/campus environment too. And also while drunk. Though to be honest, everything seems like a good idea when drunk.

A quick google shows that Valve is giving steam support on the PS3: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/116/1161617p1.html so it might not be too far a stretch to imagine a reverse. Have to wait and see, if an alliance does happen, it'll be really interesting. Valve is the next major video game company I respect alongside Blizzard.

whoops, accidentally double posted there for a sec =P
As far as gaming goes I go back to the old NES days and have been gaming all my life. This generation of consoles is rapidly becoming one of my favorites. I find that developers have gotten comfortable enough with designing games for 3 dimensions and are cranking out some truly incredible experiences much like what the SNES/Genesis generation did for 2D games.
I got a real soft spot for turn based strategy games with Valkyria Chronicles and Fire Emblem. I am absolutely in love with the Mass Effect games that I discovered this summer after a long stretch of not caring.
The only other card game I ever got into besides magic was the Star Wars card game by decipher based on the original movies. The problem that game had was that episode 1 came out around when they were in the middle of the sets based off of Empire Strikes Back so they made a separate card game for episodes 1-3 which really limited the potential growth of the game. It also suffered from sets being somewhat parasitic where if you had a deck with based around cloud city cards you were much better off keeping them on cloud city than sending them elsewhere to fight someone else which made the game a toss up between fighting at a disadvantage or getting milled which kinda sucks
Im also extremely excited for diablo 3 I so look forward to attempting to pay for the game with that real money auction house making the game basically free

Every rarity gets good cards. That means that some mythic rares will be tournament quality as will some commons, some uncommons and some rares. My promise wasn't that mythic rares wouldn't get good cards but that we wouldn't limit the good cards to only being mythic rare.
Bear this in mind the next time a powerful mythic rare is spoiled
Thanks to chaostheory90 for finding this quiz for me
I loved the first few Fire Emblem games, too. Around the start of the Wii releases I just couldn't keep up with the series, between the console it was on and school, etc.

It seems like it has been a while since a good Fire Emblem was released... I loved the one for game cube but the followup one on Wii was extremely dissapointing in my mind.
Out of the bunch of them though I think the ones on GBA are my favorites. I really wish they would release some more titles for Fire Emblim.
