They got the flavor down with Yawgmoth perfectly, I’m very impressed. He’s also incredibly strong, as he should be (even for his pre-god form). I might just have to change my mono-black deck to him and Vorthos it up.
Talismans are all I ever wanted for the past decade. Now that we have them, they're so beautiful. *sniff*
*dabs corner of left eye with kleenex, sniffles* I am so happy! Unexpected to see these quintuplets, but welcome for sure!
These are really the first cards in the set to get me excited. I have played the Mirrodin Talisman cycle in almost all decks that could since I started EDH. Now I have a set of ten to jam into my commander "Cube".
Yawgy boy is going straight into my Meren deck. Essentially free sac outlet that draws cards and hinders opponents boards, plus a discard outlet on the side? Yes please!
Also thank goodness enemy Talismans are on the table now, I play enemy color combos way more often than Ally!
I want to like Yawgmoth, I mean its freaking Yawgmoth but I hate unfocused cards like this. Cards that are trying to play with 2 different archetypes that don't have a lot to do with one another. He's a sac outlet so you want to play tokens or aristocrats but then he proliferates which is a totally different thing. The only way I can think of to reconcile the two is to play black walkers that make tokens but there aren't enough.
Seems good in the 99 of Hapatra but I'm just not seeing him otherwise.

Wouldn’t versatility be a plus, since it can go into almost any deck with black? I like commanders who could do many things, work with many types.

i don't think he looks all that unfocused.. i see a 'combos like a boss' all over! chuck a couple of undying guys there, and it's a yawgmoth's bargain. I think the proliferate part is sorta like how i chuck in clockspinning in most of my blue decks, since it interacts with a surprisingly large number of things. you wouldn't think it, but it even interacts with endless scream.

I guess? It just seem tricky to find a way to build around taking advantage of both abilities. If we want to just focus one one and treat the other like a cherry on top I guess thats perfectly viable. It drives some inner Johnny part of me crazy but im sure it's viable

Ya, I guess. It doesn't interest me personally yet, maybe if I saw a full decklist
He's obviously meant to support a token deck that uses Bloodghast and Ophiomancer and friends to fill its hand with cards and shrink down enemy creatures with counters, and then uses its full hand to discard to proliferate and shrink down those creatures till they're dead, freeing the way for the rest of Yawgmoth's creatures to attack. You can even run cards like Drana, Liberator of Malakir, Necropolis Regent, and Unspeakable Symbol to pump up your tokens, and then proliferate those counters to pump them further.
Black Market, Spawning Pit, Yahenni, Undying Partisan, Smokestack ... there's a number of artistocrat and even stax-type cards that Yawgmoth's proliferate works very well with. Really though, all you need is tokens and repeatably resurrecting creatures since the combination of card draw + mass -1/-1 counter distribution + discarding cards to kill those creatures en masse is already strong, even ignoring the further synergies he enables.

Ya I guess as long as there are enough Black Market type cards that care about both creatures dying and running counters. I just didn't think there was enough to build a decent deck but I could totally be wrong, maybe there is. Generally speaking Token/Bloodghast decks don't care about proliferation (or perhaps Im just ignorat and they actually use them way more than I realize) thats what I mean by unocused. It makes me want to jam cards that use counters into an archetype that doesn't generally care about counters.
Also, neither of Yawgmoth's requires a tap, and all resources required (life/creature/black mana) come easy in black. And since Yawgy doesn't have a designated direction, it makes it all the more fun to brainstorm around him. Not all legends should be some boring one-dimension powerhouse.
I am extremely pleased with both Yawgmoth and the number of ninjas that they will be printing for Yuriko decks.
2 ninjas, not really a lot.
I don't really count a tribe as a tribe until you have 20 creatures of said tribe available.
As a limited archetype it will have more than 2 cards supporting it. Just wait.
I would like more ninjas. i loved ninjas when i got back into magic back in betrayers. When yuriko was released i was so happy to be able to play a true ninja tribal deck, but there were not enough ninjas to make it tribal. Now with 16 (And hopefully a few more coming) I can make it a yuriko ninja deck that is not just "Draw big stuff and do big damage" i am hoping to do a bit more with ninjas than just poke. But i will use time magic for some damage dealing.
I also need to get a true name nemesis, (And when i have Xenograft, Conspiracy and Arcane adaptation, my unblockabale creatures do count as ninjas.
You know what, Im warming up to Yawgmoth. Thanks for the discussion guys. I think I was just too blinded by the proliferate and thinking I want to play superfriends or Infect. Its really all about building around the sac ability, not being too concerned about building around the second and just treating it as icing for anything that happens to have counters. That sounded lame at first, but really that sac outlet is really pushed on a mere 4cmc body. He would be good even without that last ability.
