One thing that was pointed out to me that makes him slightly better and I might consider him in 1v1 competitive is that if you pay X=0 he still comes into play with 3 +1 counters. Still horrible for multiplayer though.
> Hates your own graveyard
> Doesn't give you attack triggers
> Can't sacrifice the token or use death triggers
This is easily the clunkiest and most awful commander design we've seen.
you can sac and use death triggers. Just not as beneficial.
A) They exile themselves, so they don't give you death triggers on their own
B) You can't use anything sorcery speed or even make use of stuff like Ashnod's, since its at end of combat.
You can use Ashnod's Altar just fine. You just need instants/flash/mana sink if you want to make use of the mana it generates.
Considering Gyrus only makes 1 token when he attacks, though, missing out on 2 is hardly the biggest problem. The point would be to get the death triggers of the creatures you're making tokens of.

token doubles and craterhoof. Token doubles and vorinclex. Heck even getting back an ibex for a turn could be the game ending combat.
My issue with these cards is that I can't decide who should helm my next Wildfire deck.
Xantcha, Sleeper Agent comes out quick and survives Wildfire, ready to wreck shop on an empty board before anyone really gets to play Magic. On the other hand, Lord Windgrace is slower and potentially douchier, and lets you upscale to Death Cloud and Destructive Force. There is no way someone should have to decide between those two things.
While I fully recognize Thantis the Warweaver isn't a great card, I really love to force my group to attack each turn. So he's definitely going to be my next deck. Time to brush off those Repercussions.

Did some plotting with hydra. I see great potential now. And those who do not means less decks with him meaning I can be original.
There is no potential here unless your entire playgroup is Centaur tribal and vorthos decks built based on card art. Playing coy about some "grand strategy" does nothing but showcase your obvious inability to recognize how bad the card design is.

Warning for Flaming. Please refrain from personal attacks.
I don't totally get the hate directed at Gyrus. He's an X/X for X at basically any point in the game, and he reanimates (albeit temporarily) for free. He's not cEDHable (most likely) but he's a solid card. He's cheap and his ability is free, he hits hard and scales well. Only real complaint is that he doesn't really interact much with lands as a type.
Gyrus should have, at the very least, been "When it attacks, return a land from your graveyard to the battlefield". That's a Hydra I would have loved to play.
Looks like the best commander in that deck is Black Panther, and even that's dubious. Hopefully the Bant Commanders look interesting or I might just sit this round out.

Oath of the Gatewatch; the set that caused the competitive community to freak out over Basic Lands.
Nah, spider is cool. Checks the Jund spider box and the force-attack legend. The problem is they hyped this deck as "land matters" when the legends don't all have the word "land" on them.
We don’t know which deck Treasure Nabber is in yet, right? I just imagine it as an anti-artifact card in Windgrace....for even more mana. But wG seems to want to just use lands for all sorts of different things.
I am really liking the Lieutenant cards this time around. Green one goes automatically into a couple of my decks (Anafenza, Atraxa). I just hope the white one does something more interesting than giving you 3 lives.
Overall the new cards for the "lands" deck don't seem as strong as for the Izzet one, or to particularly reinforce the "lands" theme of the deck. Which is a major disappointment.

It was spoiled during the UR deck's day, so I imagine it'll be in Saheeli's deck.
Is it just me or is the Hydra even worse than the spider? Like seriously can someone explain how the Hydra is a thing? Like, what a terrible reanimator general. I'm actually kind of upset. Jund is my fav combo and all 3 were disappointments. At least I still have Prossh
Gyrus, Waker of Corpses? I like it, well a lot better than everything else. It's almost a colorshifted Alesha, Who Smiles at Death. It's ability is weaker as it doesn't bring the actual creature back, but you also don't have to pay mana for it and it's based on how much you payed for him instead of just being 2 power or less. Honestly, with the access to token doublers and the fact that Gyrus is going to get bigger as the game goes on, I think he's actually stronger than Alesha. Imagine casting Gyrus for six the turn after a doubling season, swinging with haste, and making two Protean Hulks to sac at end of combat. I think Gyrus has the ability to be pretty nuts, and doesn't need voltron cards to make it big enough to be able to attack late game.
Gyrus is actually the second commander spoiled that I actually want to use. Really hoping Varchild is in the Jund deck. Though, I am wildly disappointed at the fact that the only deck that has an actual theme is the Izzet Artifact deck. Honestly kind of wishing they had stuck to tribals for a few more releases.

The red, artifact-related lieutenant was spoiled today...
I have, and I am pondering if a Jund pillowfort voltron deck is possible with it, with a +1/+1 theme so Thantis could use Retribution of the Ancients right after the trigger to kill attackers. (And let No Mercy handle the rest, add more counters via Blade of the Bloodchief)
It's not a land theme general and not a spider general either, but Thantis is the first of Jund that could force combat on every player. Add Echo Circlet and Vanguard's Shield to block more.
Crash of Rhino Beetles is nothing but a stupidly large creature when you have excessive numbers of lands. Its name is equally stupid.
I love it.
Xenagod decks will like that
No they won’t. It’s a 5/5 for 5 without protection. And if your deck functions even a luttele bit, the game is over long before you reach 10 lands.
Also, finally a Jund hydra! I’ve been wanting to make a Jund hydra deck for a while now but was always contemplating between going red green for more options or use black for cabal coffers. With this deck, I can finally build this. Only thing that’s to bad is that it’s ability nonbo’s with half of the hydra’s available..

The secret to enjoyable Commander games is not winning first, but losing last.
If my post has no tags, then i posted from my phone.
Should have advertised it as Land-Matters-Battlecruiser, because our default assumption for lands-matters is either combo or card advantage-grinding-midrange.
Spider > Hydra for me anyway, adding Vigilance and two whole colors would make a Fumiko strategy plausible now (instead of being outright bad most of the time), while Hydra is just the slower battlecruiser cousin of Karador, Teneb and Alesha.
Just to reinforce the point it's a battlecruiser deck, my Horde Lands deck can't find anything new for it to play with, while my battlecruiser Animar at least found a Rhino Friend to play with (it's admittedly slow, but I'm up for anything that makes the menagerie unblockable).
The red, artifact-related lieutenant was spoiled today...
Yes, but iirc, the uncommons are in any deck that can use that color identity. So that one will be in both the Jund and UR decks.
not always. Garuntee Treasure nabber will be in Izzet, jund might have it. (Jund deck is already disappointing but i may still pick it up.
Izzet is the only deck that interests me right now and even then, I have an Izzet deck so it is tough to decide if i find it worthwhile to build a second. (Even for a completely different approach)

as-is it's pretty underwhelming, and it can't even do hydra tribal well because it doesn't play nice with other X-cost hydras.
