The budget constraints are certainly interesting. Wasteland, a card that probably should be in almost every deck, is quite a ways down the pile yet Strip Mine is one of the most-played lands. I find this interesting as in most cases the extra functionality of Strip Mine is not what the cards are being used for (problematic non-basics). Of course, Strip Mine can be had for $3 and Wasteland is $30+.
Also, no ABUR duals made the list, but most of the shocklands and fetches made it.
This would seem to indicate that the decklists on this site are skewed to the slightly-more budget conscious.
And yet, Mana Crypt, which is hard to be had at less than $70, makes an appearance.
Well, for 1) Strip Mine > wasteland; not only budget wise, but function as well. The budget considerations would be ghost quarter/ tec edge.
2) A lot of people play paper magic in no-proxy playgroups. This means you have to actually afford what you want to use. This will skew the list over non-budget online players.
3) Doesn't help that much, but you can get a crypt from 55-60ish.
Thanks very much for posting this, Scoeri! This list has definitely tipped the scales in favor of me converting my EDH collection into an edh cube, and will definitely come in handy while working out my list.
Great list but I think that the date of updating deck info will greatly influence this info, certainly decks made in the last 2 years will reflect the power of cards like Prime Time.
Woot Woot! So, looking at the 'by type: planeswalkers', I noticed that there is only one deckbuild with Nissa Revane. That would be mine.
(unless the database code has some flaws in it).
If you look at the results for all the decklists you will see that Nissa has 12 hits. And even that list only counts 2143 decks out of over 3000 decklists. I could not count over 900 decklists because of bad formatting and some of those people might also play Nissa.
I'm in the process of making a report with all the lists that are badly formatted and reporting broken links to KingChewie.

Yeah, I was looking at the recent builds, as mine is a recent build...or at least, I keep mine up-to-date.
In decks with blue, I found sol ring to be underwhelming. Its a highly overated card.
?????
Blue is one of the best users OF Sol Ring. They don't have much of any natural acceleration (Dreamscape Artist and Patron of the Moon nonwithstanding), so they're limited to artifact acceleration. Being able to cast cards like Trinket Mage to tutor up Sol Ring gives blue a stronger acceleration boost than even Solemn Simulacrum.
But even in decks with Green, Sol Ring is the best acceleration there is. It's arguably the single most powerful card in magic - Cube comparisons put it as the #1 drafted artifact over Black Lotus and Moxen.

Haha, I don't know why I typed "sol ring". I meant Sensie's Divining Top.
Top is underwhelming in decks with blue.

Some of those cards listed as mythic but I thought they're just rares.
If something was reprinted as a Mythic like Time Warp or Mindslaver but was originally a rare it will be picked up as a mythic. Also From the Vault reprints are mythic so you see things like Sol Ring as a mythic.
In the following graphs the X-axis always represents the number of cards of the top 4455 that are matched against peoples deck.
The Y-axis represents the percentage of the 500 decks that were measured that are covered by the top X cards of the top 4455.
In this graph we see that most decklists use at least one card that is not obvious. Even if we remove the top 20% of "oddball" decks we still need over 4000 cards to cover all lists.
Interesting tidbit: GouGou's Teneb, the Harvester list is the first list to completely match. You can find his complete decklist in the top 720.
Interesting tidbit 2: In the top 4455, Teneb, the Harvester, his commander, is the 720th card.
Not including the commander drops this number to 718.
Here are some numbers for the top 7 offenders (including myself) BGW GouGou top 718 cards for 99% coverage BGW scoeri top 826 cards for 99% coverage GWU ISBPathfinder top 1095 cards for 99% coverage U equilibrium top 1095 cards for 99% coverage WBR MiffedMoogle top 1095 cards for 99% coverage BGW IceBear top 1096 cards for 99% coverage BGW Greeeek top 1096 cards for 99% coverage
In this graph we see that, if we remove the top 20% of "oddball" decks, and only require the "core" 75% of the deck to match that we only need the top 1400 to match those decks. One could say that the core of every Commander deck and by extension the commander meta-game exists out of these 1400 cards.
If we only require 50% coverage we move this number down to about 600 cards.

I've read your explanation of the graphs several times, and I want to make sure I'm interpreting them correctly. So the X axis is all the cards (readable by the script) that appear in the 500 decks measured? Thus, if it weren't for spelling mistakes in the decklists, 1 on the Y axis would correspond to 4455 on the X axis, correct? Which would mean that all 500 decks could be built with just those 4455 cards?
I think an example would help me understand better. Tell me if this is correct: Sol Ring is ranked 1st out of all the cards, so it is represented as 1 on the X axis. If Sol Ring was in all 500 of the 500 decks, 1 on the X axis would correspond to .01 on the Y axis, because Sol Ring would be 1/100th (.01) of 100% of the decks. If Sol Ring was in half the decks, it would show up as .005 on the Y axis, since it would be 1/100th of half the decks. As it is, Sol Ring shows up 355 times so Y=(1/100)*(355/500)=0.0071.
OK, so for the 75% and 50% graphs, you didn't look at the 100 decks that contained the lowest ranked cards? And, of the 400 decks you did look at, you cut off the 25 and 50 lowest ranked cards, respectively, in each deck?
If I'm reading those graphs correctly, that's really interesting. Is there any way you could post the rest of the 600 or 1400 cards beyond the top 200? Also, does anyone know how these numbers compare to other formats, particularly legacy and vintage? I would imagine that there are far, far fewer "core" cards in the other eternal formats, but it would be nice to be able to compare.
Finally, it makes me wonder how important those outlier/oddball cards are to the decks that run them. I would imagine they give those decks a lot of their personality and flavor, if nothing else.
I've read your explanation of the graphs several times, and I want to make sure I'm interpreting them correctly.
There are a total of 500 decks updated after the innistrad release date.
Say one of those deck would contain 99 forests and a Sol Ring.
- I start off with Sol Ring and mark all decks that contain it (including the example one) and increase the X-axis by one
- I then move on to Lightning greaves and mark all decks that contain that card
- I continue marking all the decks while I move down the list of top cards
- Once I counted "Forest" the list with 99 Forests and a Sol Ring would be completely (100%) covered and thus I can mark 1/500 or 0,2% on the Y-axis.
- As there are a total of 4455 unique cards used by those 500 decks it requires the top 4455 to cover 100% of the decks
Finally, it makes me wonder how important those outlier/oddball cards are to the decks that run them. I would imagine they give those decks a lot of their personality and flavor, if nothing else.
While that's undoubtedly true of some of them, it's definitely not guaranteed to be the case. A quick search brings up ~5 decks in multiplayer running Death Match, though I didn't check to see how many made the cutoff date to be included in the 500 analyzed here. It's generally an early tutor target for me and I would consider it an important card in my Greven deck. I also have a buddy who runs Squandered Resources and Cadaverous Bloom with nasty results, and I don't see either of those show up in lists on here all that often.
I'm not saying that my experience is true across the board, but I thought I'd share a couple anecdotes where an unusual inclusion was a useful part of the deck, rather than a quirky pet card. A lot of them are probably flavor, but there are probably large numbers of them where someone wanted to build around a weird effect.
Dark Ascension does not seem to have a large influence on the Commander meta-game. To my surprise, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is only used in 37 decks... New Phyrexia seems to be the winner in the printing of new commander staples for the last 7 sets (It has introduced 6 new cards in the top 200). Magic 2012 has all 10 in the top 200, but a lot of them are reprints.
I can't wait to see if Avacyn Restored can make a difference!
My buddy and I have been building an EDH cube, and I stumbled across this finally. It's a fantastic list. I noticed you have basic land and color fixing land in your colorless section though. That is important information to have, but I don't think they belong in the colorless section since in edh they are color specific. I also don't think that they belong in their respective color/guild/shard/wedge sections either. To provide the best information available, creating a separate section for lands for each color/guild/shard/wedge would be the way to go. That way, if I'm building a monoblack deck and want to use your thread as a resource I can see the top X black specific lands that I should be looking at for my deck, and the same would go for any other color specific deck. Love the database though. Awesome resource. Thank you.
If you want a list of the best cards for a specific color combination you should take a look at the Top 50 - By Color combination (which, imo, is the most interesting list of the bunch anyway).
The script I use for gathering information is fully automated and used the official gatherer rules database. Unfortunately official EDH color identity for all the cards is not part of that database. I could generate that information from the card's rules but that would take some extra effort.

And I think my favorite misspelling/alternate spellings were: Sensei's Diving Top, Lighting Greaves and Lightening Greaves.
No love for bloodbraided elf? Or terraforming expanse and the great wrexia, risen the deep?
Considering that 185 decks out of the 500 are allowed to play red cards (a significant number), yes that is shocking.

The script I use for gathering information is fully automated and used the official gatherer rules database. Unfortunately official EDH color identity for all the cards is not part of that database. I could generate that information from the card's rules but that would take some extra effort.
Glad you like the list.
