Marrow-Gnawer can do some amazing things with rat-tribal decks.
He's my favorite mono black general. So jank, but cute as hell. Also rats are the best tribe ever. My logic is undeniable.
Also, Oona is objectively an UB creature. The hybrids are U/B meaning it's BOTH COLORS. Whether or not you run it as mono B or mono U is irrelevant to this fact.
Oona is also just as Mono Black as it could be chosen to be played Mono Blue. The norm of course would be to use "both sides" but it can be considered a mono-black general if you choose to play it with only black. The only difference is that you have access to only 5 more cards and your general will have a hard time with anything that matters about protection from blue, multicolored matters, and so on. Yes, Oona herself is a multi-colored commander, but the playstyle of the deck can be done Mono-Black, thus you can essentially make her a psuedo Mono-Black general, and that honestly is good enough for me.
Also, I'll even attempt a Mono-Color Reaper King deck just to raise more pitchforks! (Then likely take it apart soon after)
Using her as mono black does not make her mono black. You can use any general with black in the cost and put only black cards in it.

DCI Level 1 Judge-
Thanks to Heroes of the Plane for the awesome Sig.
I've got to agree with this. I just built Geth and he's awesome. I can ramp out huge ammounts of mana through Cabal Coffers + Vesuva + Deserted Temple, or through the many mana doubling artifacts (and Nirkana Revenant. Then I can start taking everything from my opponents' graveyards. It's especially fun taking stuff like Gisela and Avacyn from the Kaalia player or looping someone else's Kokusho.
I prefer Chainer, Dementia Master. Playing Blazing Archon or Jin-Gitaxias, Core Auger from your opponent's graveyard never gets old. Every game is different and every game is fun when you have a chance to play with your opponents toys. You do have to be a special breed to play chainer though. Often you will damage yourself as much if not more than your opponents in the name of controlling the field. I personally have no problem spending life to do things and I like looking at everyones graveyard as a big version of my hand. There is definitely lots of fun and shenanigans to be had playing with Chainer.

+1 for Geth. The best is when you have Caged Sun or a Coffers out and you mill away someone's Palinchron while you have a sac outlet. Going infinite off of someone else's deck is remarkably satisfying.
Geth is just too easy for me. I've even been taking him out of some of my decks where he isn't the general. I like him still, but I only run him in decks where I'm dedicating the theme to mill and steal.
For me now, its Seizan, Perverter of Truth.
It's not mainstream, can stay under the radar, makes everyone happy and devastated at the same time!
I've tried big mana mono black generals like Drana or Geth, but they feel like just old and typical controllish mono black deck, and I want something different
I'd like to try building Shirei someday because of the same reason, but I think I'll stick with Seizan for now

No Iname, Death Aspect!? Come on. He's awesome. It may be because I started in Kamigawa, but I always loved spirits as a theme and he's by far the most effective general for the theme. Can you say Conspiricy? Reanimator with some Soulshift shenanigans for good measure makes my day.
All listed decks are physical EDH decks. I mostly only play EDH. Deck lists with my requests for suggestions will be forthcoming.
Also I have a cube on Cube Tutor! Comments on that would be greatly appreciated. Additionally if you intend to draft it you have to use 5 packs of 9 cards with 3 bots.

You can build Shirei in any number of ways actually, but it will always play as a somewhat slow (to set up) grind. Check out the decks in the database for more ideas.
Side note: If you think of the OP's question as "What is your favorite general for a mono-black deck?" then Oona is a perfectly fine answer. I've seen some great lists that sleeve up Oona next to 38 swamps. Open your mind.
I have made many monoblock decks the last 3 years of EDH and it's undoubtly Phage the Untouchable in a slow control game. Few threads played, tons of answers, tons of draw, grind the others out, drop a hastey Phage (or a win con) out of nowhere and win.
All snow lands, trying to make all foil deck. So black and evil looking its great. Classic black. Power at a price.
Ihsan's Shade. He is just so badass, and oozes with flavor crystals. I am in the process of making an all old school deck with Mr. Shade that only uses cards printed before Mirage and were never printed in foil (except for basic lands). All of the basics are all Alpha swamps as well. It is so pimp.

How do you make a phage EDH deck? Cast her and loose?
Or is a pseudo-phage deck where she is in the 99 and tutored for? Not sure I understand...
Any deck with Phage as the commander, even if not ever planning on casting her, is just begging to get screwed by a mindslaver.
I suppose if your playgroup is okay with ignoring the trigger when casting from the command zone it could work but that deserves mentioning
My friend swears by her Phage deck. Good to see there are others too

Long time lurker but this post has finally irked me enough to post.
Just read through 4 pages and only saw 1 brief mention of my pride, Maga, Traitor to Mortals. If you are playing mono black, there are usually a few things going on (provided you're not running a combo deck) : Tutoring, Ramping, Attrition, Recurring etc. of which, ramping and frequent board wipes are staple plays. In which case, Maga is the most reliable win con ever in the command zone whenever you need him. Play him late game, direct d takes care of one, general dmg takes care of another (better with haste), leave him there for the next strike. Your remaining opponents will be scratching their heads over whether or not to kill him, just to get hit by his 187 life loss to the dome next turn. If he gets locked or blocked out of combat, just kill him yourself (You're playing black, I'm sure you can come up with some sac benefits from it) or clear the board again. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Your move.
Although others have mentioned some great generals but Maga's my man.
Great thread for all die-hard mono black fans by the way.

Based on tinkering with a bunch of the other black legendaries I'd say other than chainer, the best mono black generals in my opinion are probably Geth, Lord of the Vault, Sheoldred, Whispering One, and Xiahou Dun, the One-eyed.

Mortal Combat for bonus points!!
I actually play Geth right now and he is fun. I've just been playing him for a few months now so I'm looking for something new.
How is Shirei? He looks incredibly fun and pretty tool-boxy if you want it to be.
Drana is cool because you can lock down the board and take a player out soon afterward since she's so...front heavy.
Geth is just cool because reanimating things is my jam.
