After talking with some people at GenCon and seeing a Farm themed EDH deck, me and my brother came up with the idea of doing a Wizard of Oz themed EDH deck since we live in Kansas.
Now I think running Reaper King as the General will work the best, gives us access to all the colors and is on theme for the deck. The goal is to line up Legendary Creatures for all the main characters. So I am looking for some help is putting the deck list together, and in needing that help I turn to the good people here.
An ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Removal of the source after that time won't affect the ability. Some abilities cause a source to do something rather than the ability. Any activated or triggered ability that references information about the source checks that information when the ability is put onto the stack. Otherwise, it will check that information when it resolves. If the source is no longer in the zone it's expected to be in, its last known information is used.
Don't forget you'll need Toto, a Yellow Brick Road, and some Evil Flying Monkeys, as well as the Wizard Himself (any cards with a man behind a curtain?)
What to use for them, I have no idea. I will keep an eye out though.
I was thinking Karn, Silver Golem for the Tin Man and Jareth, Leonine Titan for the Cowardly Lion. These kinda leans the deck towards a more defensive build, which makes me wanna run Doran, the Siege Tower as the Living Apple Trees, and kinda build this big Defense deck...
It is trying to find cards that fit the theme and aren't completely junk that is proving to be trouble.
As a connoisseur of fun, interesting matches, I still to this day have not been able to craft that "perfect deck"; the deck that I can play and have fun over time, doesn't get boring, but simultaneously is fun to play against. I honestly don't think it exists. It's like a unicorn. A ninja unicorn.
Recross the paths is the closest thing I can find to a yellow brick road so far. Meh.
edit... Oh! You totally need to paint a pair of Lightning Greaves red for the ruby slippers. In fact, if you really wanted to go all the way with this, you could use the Set Editor to make custom art cards for the characters. That way Jareth or Ajani would actually be the art from the movie and greaves really could be the ruby slippers, etc.
Edited in a list of what I got so far, still need to figure out what other characters to reference and how to represent them in card for. Plus trying to figure out a way for the deck to function...Might have to look into the Return to Oz movie and the books for more creatures...
As far as the flying monkeys, I suppose that depends on whether you consider the type line important or the image. There are plenty of "Ape" creature types, obviously not considering the changelings, but none of those fly and it might be a bit of a stretch to call Avian Changeling a flying monkey, even if it's true in game.
Now if you're intent on using the images and the typeline doesn't matter so much, there's nothing like Primoc Escapee and Thoughtbound Primoc.
WUGPhelddagrif GGGOmnath, Locus of Mana BBBXiahou Dun, the One-Eyed RRRAshling, the Pilgrim BBWTeysa, Scion of Orzhov UUUTalrand, Sky Summoner UUBVela the Night-Clad GGBVhati il-Dal RUWRuhan of the Fomori
A bit of a necro but I recently got a bunch more cards for the deck and we are pasted the 50% mark so I am hoping to find some stuff to fill out the deck. Thoughts?
maybe crumbling necropolis can be the wicked witches castle.

Can you only have one scarecrow, one tinman, one lion?
I would think have 2-3 of each would be just fine and increase the chances of having the party all in play at the same time.

Got Teeg...Tornado elemental might be good, got got desert twister in there but can't hurt to have another one right...Maze would be good, getting my hands on one might prove troubling...guess I could settle for the cheap maze...

Dorothy could be Hanna, Ship's Navigator or Braids, Conjurer Adept (or maybe you could have the conjurer as the good witch and the cabal minion as the bad?). Melira, Sylvok Outcast probably resembles her closest in art terms. She could also be Merieke Ri Berit, what with her ability to charm, or Saffi Eriksdotter with her devotion to her friends.
I think you're going to have to go with Isamaru, Hound of Konda as Toto.
You could almost make the main cast out of Planeswalkers and Reaper King as the Scarecrow Commander
Tin Man - Karn Liberated
Lion - Ajani Goldmane
Good Witch - One of the Elspeths maybe
Bad Witch - Liliana Vess or one of the Chandras
Oz - One of the Jaces
I know they're stretching it some. Just brainstorming.
But look at google images for the city of Oz and tell me it doesn't look like Serra's Sanctum.

Plus, for the falling house, how about you get some sort of manland, and then fling it?
There are innumerable kithkin that could be used to great avail as the munchkins.
