I actually playtested these in my karn, and found them to be underwhelming.
Did I miss something or played them in a bad manner, that they seem bad in the place where they should rule as kings?
Prototype Portal is useful for colors without strong tutors; a mono-white deck that's not focused on enchantments or artifacts doesn't have much to go to for tutor cards. Red, even less outside goblins.
It's a FAR cry from a Demonic Tutor. But some decks need to take what they can get. The fact that you can use it each turn is a plus, assuming you're able to generate sufficient mana.

Sounds like you're thinking of Planar Portal, which is not the same.
I've seen Portal be alright a couple times, but mostly it just gets nuked and someone is out a card.
Mirrorworks, on the other hand, I love to death. I had a Spine of Ish Sah token collecting minigame going for a while a month or so back after using it to double up a bunch of mana rocks. My opponents either didn't feel the need to remove it or couldn't find an answer. It loses something in more competitive groups as it doesn't do anything on its own, but it's a fun card to play around with.

Our Sharuum-player loves to imprint artifact lands on it.
His "T1 land, sol ring > T2 land, portal /w imprinted artifact land and T3 Clock of Omens"-play was one of the nastiest things I have seen.
I've seen both cards used to great effect but they require a pretty heavy selection of artifacts to be good value.
I came to say the same thing. Imprinting artifact lands is pretty nice.
