Hey everyone, I'm Apple. I'm pretty new to EDH, (Just bought one of the Pre-constructed decks) and I'm hoping to get into the format more. I've been playing magic for about 2 years now, though I haven't played since the Shards of Alara bloxk.
Anyways, I recently moved, and I'm not very close to any shops or anything, so I don't really have very many options as far as places to play.
I'm sure there are other people in my situation, and I thought, why not try to set up a small EDH league over Skype or some other online service.
I'd think this would be better suited for beginners, but if you want to play EDH, and don't mind playing with some more inexperienced players, then go right ahead.
I'll try to manage the 'league' if there's any interest, so post here if you'd be interested and we'll try to set something up.
Dude, this would be amazing. I have been playing EDH for a good while now, but I recently moved and none of the shops around here are very big into casual formats. I would support this movement 100%.
I would most definitely be okay with this. I've been looking for an outlet to test new EDH decks of mine while I'm away from my LGS, if you would be okay with proxies. This excites me greatly.
I'm guessing it would be obligatory that degenerate combos/land destruction/whatever other things we deem unfun would be banned, correct?
but i am also dumbtarded, would it be playin on dat **** or webcamming the board state

if you see me playing edh on modo I am always running badcards.dec http://offcolorcast.com For people that wanted a second EDH podcast to listen to each week.
I would be interested in this. I have like once a week I am able to play at my LGS, and sometimes, I don't want to be on Magic Online. Sometimes I want to play my finished Kaalia of the Vast deck I don't have on MTGO, and this would be an exciting opportunity.

I would imagine the best/simplest way to do things, would be to use the defaulted list on http://www.mtgcommander.net

Okay, maybe not banned, but strongly frowned upon. The last thing I'd want is to do is introduce a new player to EDH with "LOL SUNDERING TITAN ANNIHILATION LOL COMBO OFF YOU ALL TAKE INFINITE DAMAGE XD."
In other words, I would want the environment to be casual and not all that competitive at all.
I'd like that, I play edh sometimes with my friend via skype.
Only issues are:
Doesn't skype charge for a more than 2 person call to include Video?
And Video quality isn't always amazing, sometimes you have to take peoples word for it.

Wonderful, wonderful. Can't believe everyone is interested in this. I'll start to try to set things up so we can test this out.
@Deafbeats
Skype DOES charge for this, but if you are on a new account, your first... week I think, is free. Other than that, I'm sure there are other video conference services that would be free and would work.
As for cards that would be banned, I think it would be best to play it by ear, use the current banlist, and if anything turns out to start ruining the fun, we can see what we'll do about it.
I think proxies would be very good as long as everyone else agrees, though if we want to start some sort of league with ranks or whatnot, then we might want to restrict what is proxy-able.
I am very excited to try this out, hopefully playing via Webcam doesn't turn out to be too difficult.
Did this before and it was a blast only did a 1v1 though. I prefer it over cockatrice since it feels a little bit more like you're playing at a table with people. Not a big fan of programs for Magic.
A suggestion for video chat programs: use Google+. They have video "hang outs" which basically allows unlimited video windows open. As far as the game goes, how will you guys regulate and look at each others' board states or whatnot?
I planned to just have the WebCams on the boards, but we're going to need to give that a trial run to see how it works out. If that doesn't work, then we'll see what we can do from there.
Also, I'm available right now for a trial game, if anyone else would like to try a 1v1 or something, now would be a great time to give it a shot.
Some of you may think that you have made great mistakes in your lives, and perhaps you have. But let me ask you this.... did you ever play strip poker with two fat chicks and win?
Yes, and it is probably the most practical way to pull this off. Even if we go this route, however, I still think it is a good idea to at least have every player in a Skype chatroom while playing for several reasons:
1. It makes it easy to communicate information and toss around friendly banter;
2. It reduces the amount of anonymity and therefore holds players to a greater degree of accountability, which is crucial for keeping this a beginner-friendly environment.
I am pretty sure br0su is correct, luckily the cockatrice interface is a lot less butt than mws I think, especially for newer bros

I don't really like online magic programs, but it would save me the pain of buying cards and such, and would probably be the easiest and most understandable way to do this.
We'll give it a go as soon as we can. I'll be available tonight starting around 6PM Eastern, so if we can get a few players together and start up, that'd be wonderful.
Oh, I see, this is a beginner league. Didn't see that yesterday. Well, if anyone wants to play me anyway(been in the game 15 years, and as I mentioned earlier, my Kaalia deck is in optimal mode) launch me a PM.

I originally intended for this to be a beginner league simply because I am a beginner, but as long as the matches are more or less casual, it wouldn't matter too much.
I'd consider being involved in a Cockatrice/Skype league as well. Not down for aiming a webcam at the board. Not only is that a pain to keep track of, it doesn't play well with anyone who uses a laptop webcam, which are generally attached to the screen.

[Pr]Jaya | Estrid | A rotating cast of decks built out of my box.
Update: Played a couple of games with gambit300 over Cockatrice with Voice Chat on Skype. Worked out fabulously, took only a small amount of learning with Cockatrice. We got our first game done in about 45 minutes, and the next in around 10.
I recommend trying it out yourself, I'll write up some "Rules/Formalities" and see if we can get some sort of an organized league or something started.
I've done this (webcam games) with a friend who lives in Canada. we found it tough to play via webcams, pointing towards the table top - the angle is usually an issue (unless you can suspend one from the ceiling, pointing straight down) and as has been pointed out, if your webcam is in your laptop its no good.
Cockatrice is ok but i find OCTGN2 better and as of the end of this year there is a new version coming out.
We generally play using OCTGN now and skype just to chat. We've had a few of us on at one time and its good fun. Plenty of banter and laughs. Takes some of the anonymity out of things.
