But most of the time I'd rather just stick Momir and then just win rather than build tempo and draw cards, he's probably good but I don't see how making your creatures into Scroll Theives is better than turning a bunch of your utility creatures into Demonic Tutor.
Edric's speed lets you out pace Momir Vig and sit around with a full grip of control magic, Momir Vig needs to be in play for it to win, and thats not going to happen when you play against a deck with counter magic thats been drawing 4+ cards since turn 3.
If you dont understand how tempo works and why it works I cannot help you further than that...There is a long history of such tempo decks and they are good and they work. Incremental advantage versus raw tutoring power...I guess it comes down to meta and play style but edric is a ton easier to get online and keep online. Making your creatures scroll theives is great when your creatures are good early game utility creatures that build upon one another over the course of the early game...the goal is just deal 30 damage before the opponent can resolve something that matters...which when drawing 2-5 cards a turn is pretty easy to do. In fact as pointed out strategies like Edric pretty much stop strategies like Momir dead in their tracks.
Jhoira is my choice, while it might not seem as good as niv-mizzet in 1 vs 1 , she a lot more difficult to control when played right, and allow more flexibility to the deck.
Niv mizzet is too often a 1 trick pony that is relativly easy to answer
Niv-Mizzet can make for a monstrous counterburn. I should know, I've played it and wrecked serious face. In 1v1, cards like Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning often become monstrous. Throw in a million counterspells and burn to support Niv's innate CA, that's GG.
Emmara is like the worst parts of Legends and Homelands got pregnant, aborted the fetus, tossed it in the trashcan, set it on fire and wrapped the corpse in a Dragon's Maze pack wrapper.
I believe that I have enough social competence to slip into a party or two, potentially wooing some attractive females that would not mind spending the evening performing the booty dance on me.
How has everyone forgotten the best Izzet general, when she was so recently printed? In 1v1 Nin, the Pain Artist is far stronger than Jhoira or Niv-Mizzet. Nin is a permission control deck with a built in Stroke of Genius on a stick. About 40 counters and a few bounce/removal spells and Nin soon buries any opponent in CA. I'll throw Nin together and battle any Jhoira or Niv build on Cockatrice if you guys disagree.
Jhoira is second place because of Niv's high cost and ease with which his combo can be disrupted.
Id like to think that at some point Nin will end up being best here...I simply havnt seen any real competitive lists being played yet. For now I guess ill go with Niv Mizzet until I know more.
This is probably the toughest choice, but i have to go with Niv, he's a beast when it comes to CA and his hand is never filled with fatties without your general.

Tantarus: It didn't make the gaka greifer level, so it should be fine
Niv-Mizzet, mainly because he doesn't require a ton of expensive spells to be explosive. It's just card draw and countering, and those are already powerful abilities. Jhoira looks cheaper, but any removal/countermagic makes her fold, and her suspending takes a bit of time. Unless you have 5 mana the turn you played her, be prepared to get whacked.
I haven't played against Nin, so I can't rate her. She looks extremely fierce with her card draw, but it's not free card draw like Edric. I need more experience with her.
Though my vote does go to Niv (I already voted, just reiterating), I am indeed very interested in Nin now. I might just cook something up spontaneously.

I have a pretty killer Verdeloth, the Ancient deck. Token/Treefolk theme and it does pretty good 1v1 against most decks I play. Great ramp and like 5 sources that double my mana and Earthcraft to make it even faster.
For those who voted for Momir over Edric for the last category I would like to direct your attention to the French national EDH championships which included three edrics in the top 8 along with one winning the whole thing...can you guess how many momirs ended up doing well at that event?

Is it possible being that he is a new general that the field was just not ready for him?
meh, the deck functions very similarly to Sygg which everybody should have already known about..not to mention tournament players should have been looking at edric as soon as he was spoiled anyways, he was fairly obviously going to at least be somewhat good. 3 top 8s and a win is pretty much just a confirmation of him being high tier rather than just random forum speculation of the fact.
Mind you I am not saying Momir is bad...but I think it should be clear that Edric is a better 1v1 general overall.

This is a 1v1 best general thread...you cant say Edric is better and then vote for Momir because he is more fun, how does that make sense?
I vote for Vig, but it's pretty close.
