I just got into EDH. I searched for a place with some decks I could download.
I saw the DB on MTGS and said "I would like to try all of these, especially if i could pull a few at random."
A few hours later, I went though all 1600 decks and saved them as individual apprentice decks (.dec).
I chose Apprentice because you can load any .dec directly into Cockatrice and play.
Some notes:
Some of the decks were no longer available to download or view.
Some the the decks weren't in a downloadable format.
Some decks I just missed accidentally.
I was going to sort by Commanders, but I started too late, and it would have been a huge PITA to begin again. So all the decks are only filed by color.
I was able to get 1500+ of the decks into the download. You'll need 7-zip to open it. I wanted to use winzip but some of the deck names gave me an error.
If anyone wants to reorg the files sorted by commander, like in the DB, feel free to do so.
I appreciate your hard work, but isn't this just a mass netdecking tool?
by that i mean:
Wouldn't you rather just build your own deck..? It takes the personality out of it
Well sure, if you feel like using it that way. But what if you get bored of playing your decks over and over? Now you have an unpredicatable grab bag 1500+ decks deep! Sweet.
Sounds like a fun subformat, btw -- everyone pick an EDH deck at random?

That sounds like a great time. I would love to get some random janky pile and wind up against similar piles. But then one guy will get Azami and everyones day gets ruined.

You'd also have to control for the frequency with which each general pops up. Not to mention that it would suck for the guys getting Magnus's "Deck for every general" project decks (no offense Magnus, but seriously, Lady Orca?). I think it would be much more enjoyable if there was some intervention in terms of picking what decks do and don't make it into the grab-bag.
you realize, short of convincing 4 people you know to all download all 1,500 EDH decks onto their computer (given enough space on their computers to do that), there is no real way within Commander itself or Cockatrice to randomly determine which deck you load...
and I would hate to have to roll a 1500 sided dice each time I want to play an EDH game with my friends.
Dice Roller4 D1500s rolled
1220
1197
913
1315
You would actually have to assign each deck a number for that to work, and everyone in your play group would have to agree to these numbers and then you would have to specify one person to notify all of the members of your playgroup what dice are rolled as well as to roll the dice... (not to mention the fact that outside of the digital media, 1500-sided dice don't exist.

well the .rar file is only 500mb or so it took about as long to click the link as it did for me to download. as far as random selection... i have no friggin idea maybe theres some way to do it without numbering them. i dunno... there also sorted pretty well Dr. Rob good work there. i suppose though you could just use it as a way to test some deck ideas for a general you've been eyeballing overall pretty sweet idea and thumbs up to you sir

I built 4 EDH decks. One of the hardest things I found was getting the land and sorting the cards around my commander. I figure you can use these decks as a tool to begin building your own, swapping cards as you see fit. Or, use if for a random EDH game.
That sounds like a great time. I would love to get some random janky pile and wind up against similar piles. But then one guy will get Azami and everyone's day gets ruined.
With so many decks, the odds of that happening are pretty low, but it's all a part of randomness. I've played killer EDH decks and just couldn't get the cards I've needed.
That would be pretty awesome.
Can these be converted to Cockatrice easily?
Sounds like .dec is the format for Cockatrice. Ugh if this actually becomes a thing I would feel obligated to learn how to use Cockatrice and play it.
No conversion necessary, you can load any MSW or Apprentice deck directly from Cockatrice (pics default to latest version). Cockatrice allows for multiplayer EDH so the games are better/longer IMHO.
You'd also have to control for the frequency with which each general pops up. Yeah, I swear 1/4 decks are from Magnus. My thought was "Pick a random deck", so the more the merrier. If someone wanted to, they could reorg my file into generals, it would allow for greater tuning of what deck you wanted, but then you would never get the thrill of the Lady Orca deck

Dice 4 rolls on a 1500-sided dice: 937 319 198 1338 / Total: 2792

First, the .7z file is 500 KB, the unzipped folder is a whopping 5 MB (about the size of 4 old school floppy disks). If they don't have the space available, they have bigger problems.
I was thinking of writing a vb script that would randomly traverse the EDH folder and return a deck to use in another. You could have a "Junk" folder within that one, and if you play a Lady Orka deck and didn't like it, you would put it in the junk folder. If the file the script returned was in that subfolder, then pick another one.
Now expanding on your idea with the dice roll, if I could devise a way to extract all the files out of the subfolders, and rename each file with <deck name>.dec to <x-deckname>.dec, <x+1deckname.dec>, ect, your /roll 1500 would work perfectly. The only disadvantage would be that our opponents would know exactly what deck you are playing, but they could probably deduce that by your commander.
I don't think this type of game is possible outside a digital environment, unless you want to print out the 1500 decks (god bless you if you do)
has anyone with a mere 10 posts ever done something this awesome?
Nope
You, sir, are a champion of champions. Random EDH matches are possible.
I really only did this for me and my friends, it costs me nothing to share it with everyone. I hope Random EDH takes off (after i or someone else can figure out how to number the decks)
Found a nifty file utility that not only let me rename across sub directories, but it let me randomize the files so that deck #88 and deck#89 could be totally different colors and commanders.
If you want to play Random EDH, just open up Cockatrice/MWS, with a junk deck. Before you play, do a /roll 1500 (I took out 6 decks to make the # easy)
Whatever your number is, is the deck you load. Too easy.
Too much time and effort was put into this to let it disappear forever. I actually had a difficult time finding it because I had forgotten the title of the thread, lol.
Anyways, thanks for the awesome upload. Gonna have some fun with this
Look at the card. Now back to Jace. Now back to that card, now back to Jace! Sadly, it isn't Jace, but if it stopped being a junk rare and became relevant, it could act like it's Jace. Crack some Worldwake. What do you have? You have a Jace, the card you wish this card could be like. Look again. THE CARD IS NOW A $75 BILL. Anything possible when you play Magic with Jace and not junk rares. This is probably spam.
I like this for a reason not listed so far actually. It gives me a way to 1v1 test my own deck builds against existing decks. Including ones I know can stomp it senseless I can I figure out changes that need to be made easier. Seems to me like an amazingly good playtesting tool.

I re-uploaded the file with a random deck number prefix. If you /roll 1500, you will deck a random deck to load.

I think the possibility of getting jank decks would be half the fun. After all, this is a casual format, isn't it?
