Does anyone think that a viable EDH deck could be built around him? You get access to all 5 colors, and he turns all scarecrows/changelings into vindicates with legs. It seems like it could be very powerful, but I'm not really much good at EDH deckbuilding. Anyone have ideas?
Play BG heavy with G for mana accel and B for tutors for Conspiracy. Conspiracy makes any creature you cast a Vindicate on legs, which is never bad, as well as pumping them.
Either that or yeah just fill it with Changelings, Scarecrows and other good stuff. Either way I can see it being potentially devastating.

Currently playing: EDH: Whatever 99 BWG cards I feel like playing from my cube.
you dont HAVE to play him 5 color, the monohybrid symbols just give you all kidns of freedom. I was going to do this myself, but i dont have the King yet.
I think its a REALLY cool idea...i would go 5-color green style personally and just splash the other 4 fo4r good stuff
also Straw soldiers is funny and much better with the king and I own one so i would definately play it if it were me Desert twister with legs is good i hear
I would go the Conspiracy route. You would need tutors to ensure you could get it in play (Academy Rector, Idyllic Tutor, Demonic Tutor). Some way to get the Conspiracy back would be really useful because it's sure to have a target on it. The rest of the deck would be good stuff of all colors.
Ive just put together my first EDH list and it uses Reaper King.
Ive got the 5 rare changelings and the scarecrows as well as conspiracy to get scarecrow effects out of the other creatures (Witness, Simalcrum, W, U, and B Bringers, Etched Oracle, Suncrusher, Reya, Woodfall Primus, and Kiki Jiki among others). Havent got to do a game with it yet, but it seems to play ok in goldfishes with a good mix of tutoring, bounce and recursion. I do need something to be able to bring back my Conspiracy though. Any suggestions?

Mine Excavation - Should work if you've switched to wizard auto-card. If not ...
Mine Excavation - :1mana::symw:
Return target artifact or enchantment card in a graveyard to its owner's hand.
Conspire (As you play this spell, you may tap two untapped creatures you control that share a color with it. When you do, copy it and you may choose a new target for the copy.)
Go infinite mana with the Druid/Bonder combo with Equilibrium, keep cycling through bouncing your Heap Doll and other cheap creature to perform one-sided Obliterate that hits enchantments.
And like I said, highly unlikely scenario, but I like my ideas anyway.
I collect: Vedalken Heretic, Lorescale Coatl, Reaper King, Worldslayer, Woodwraith Corrupter, Lorthos, the Tidemaker. Soon to collect Conquering Manticore.
I demanded a Manticore, and Wizards delivered. I now demand a Chimaera. The REAL one, not, Chimeric items. I also demand a new Gorgon. And more Manticores please.
If you want to do a combo with a scarecrow just run Painter's Servant and Grindstone. =) Turn 3 win if you just have 3 land and those two cards in opening hand.

"Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us." - Calvin & Hobbes
i have something similar to what you guys are mentioning on my thread for 5 color edh, but decided to use scion of the ur dragon instead due to the scarecrows usually being hard to cast. my "scarecrow" is chameleon colossus, but another possibility may be mirror entity
If you want to combo, you can do so with much less cards (and keeping with the artifact theme)
There are many combos that involve master transmuter, some untap ability, and gilded lotus. Throw in a thousand year elixir, pemmin's aura, freed from the reel, etc. And you have lots of ways of bouncing your scarecrows. Also, these cards all work well in the deck solo. thousand year elixir works well with scarecrowne and even birds and hierarch. pemmin's aura is always nice to throw on your general. freed from the reel can be either control or aggression. master transmuter should be in the deck anyways, and gilded lotus works well with the five color artifact theme (and with mana burn gone gilded lotus is better than ever).
With this in mind I would make my major colors green blue and black (easy enough with the right land base) red and white would really be supporting colors and should probably only be in lands that produce other colors as well. If on a budget the shards tri-lands could be useful here, as well as the conflux lands and vivids.
I think that single player this deck could be a bit slow, but if you had someone protecting you it could really shine. If you go this route, you may want some counter spells to give your teammates a reason to keep you alive.
my shop's owner runs reaper king as his general. other then himself, he only has one scarecrow. it's a great effect but he runs alot of other strategies that he doesn't need to use it but if he has to he can abuse it.

riptide replicator is another scarcrow token generator, little expensive for my tastes but when i played reaper king edh (it was my first!) generators that made token scarcrows once or more times a turn was brutal.
There is also a combo with 3 changelings that champion things. Changeling Berserker, Changeling Hero, and Changeling Titan. You use them to champion each other in a chain to vindicate everything on the board you want.
If you go mostly G/B there shouldn't be much of a problem getting mana ramp. Black Market is a good one.

Yeah but dont mention the tech... If people had access to this deck I would not be happy at all. Just not the best Scarecrow is Chameleon Colossus.
Oh that guys budget Reaper King is garbage... If you want to play on a budget play 3 color. Then use the strongest cards you can afford. Even the manabase for a budget 5C EDH deck will still be about $30.
I have actually been thinking of making my third EDH deck around Reaper King. One of the fun things I wanted to try with his deck was to have Painter Servant / Iona combo. Essentially it makes them unable to play for the rest of the game.

Yes, because douchebaggery should be goal number one (note that painter is on the suggested banlist, and for good reason). I'd wager that Painter/Iona is even worse than going Hivemind/Pact. With Hivemind/Pact, you lose outright but with painter/Iona you have to sit there and not play while on your way to losing. That just sucks.
I run a Reaper King deck and it is certainly not budget. It's built mainly around esper cards with Darksteel Forge being the key card. Master Transmuter is awesome and having Scarecrone as the only other scarecrow Makes it more interesting to play. I have found that actually playing it with scarecrows draws so much agro that in FFA games you end up being knocked out right away. As the (expensive, as others have mentioned) mana base is so good I can also run Bringers and things like Maelstrom Nexus and even Progenitus (which you can cheat into play with Elvish Piper!).
Get Consiracy and Pestilence into play, throw out the Reaper King and the Sprouting Phytohydra and start poking away 1 point of damage at a time. Not only do you Vindicate for each Phytohydra coming into play, you in essence double the amount of hydras on the board. Good defense. I will also use Day of the Dragons and cash all the defender tokens in for a mass assault.
It takes some time to get together so it works better in multi-player games.

that combo and the servant iona combo is banned sadly

Hanna, Ship's Navigator is what you're looking for, methinks.
I actually want to use Reaper King as my General, with something along the lines of this crazy 6 card combo in this highly unlikely scenario.
Ready? Here goes:
Reaper King out.
Heap Doll
Painter's Servant or other cheap creature actually, doesn't have to be a scarecrow.
Devoted Druid
Leech Bonder with Utopia Vow attached
Equilibrium
Go infinite mana with the Druid/Bonder combo with Equilibrium, keep cycling through bouncing your Heap Doll and other cheap creature to perform one-sided Obliterate that hits enchantments.
