Ok, a few of my friends and I were on our way home from an evening of EDH tonight, and we were talking about how we could make magic into a kind of drinking game. Since EDH is usually a multiplayer format, it seems like the optimal choice for such a game (and it's usually all we play anyway). So, with that being said, I thought I'd post here to hash out some ideas on how to make this work.
Basically, the only thing we worked out so far is that a person would drink whenever they lose life or gain life. I'm not sure if it should be for every point of life lost or gained, as that could get out of hand rather quickly (my Heartless Hidetsugu deck would have everyone plastered in 20 minutes), so let's figure out how to do this.
Maybe, for every 10 or less life lost/gained you take a sip of beer per point, and anything over 10, you do a shot.
First of all, I'd change the thread title by adding an asterisk. After all, us Canucks can drink when we're 19
Anyway, the way my friends and I play when we're drinking is every time your life total changes by 5 points, you drink. This includes life loss, damage, and, most importantly, LIFE GAIN. This makes the game awesome, because your control-freak friends make stupider and stupider decisions the longer they decide to run their Proclamation of Rebirth / Martyr of Sands engine. Good times!
Also, anytime a card refers to counters, we usually translate those to drinks. Power Conduit basically reads "Tap: Take a drink"

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
Basically you draft as normal, the alcohol only comes in during the games.
In essence you can use our same rules for edh or any other format.
-For every instance of damage you take, you take a shot.
-If a player doesn't want to take a shot they may scoop.
Simple as that. lets just say it got kinda silly one time when i had a vithan stinger and Infectious Horror in play. 3 shots a turn

Dear kbx41,

Saying that you sometimes wish people (in this case the implication is the staff) would fall down a well and get AIDS is hardly appropriate for the forum.
I've played a similar way, but we did it like. Whenever you took damage, you had to sip your beer 1 second for every damage you took. On the gain life tip though, whenever you gained life, you could make any opponent drink for 1 second for every life you gained. We thought that made a bit more sense, as in drinking games the drinking usually comes as a penalty of sorts for messing up in some way.
I think a draft of the Un-sets would be pretty fun drinking Magic. Just rewrite some of the cards to somehow incorporate drinking into it. Or even proxy up some fun cards yourself to include it. For instance:
Drunk Creature
1GGG
When Drunk Creature comes into play any player make take 3 shots in 20 seconds. If a player does, sacrifice Drunk Creature.
As for this in EDH, make a list of words that you can't say or actions you can't do. Or add on triggered effects to cards. For instance you can make a pain land say, whenever ~ is tapped for colored mana take a sip.
have any of you guys ever heard of "Death Chess" where every piece on the board is a drink, and when you capture a piece you drink it. Well one of my friends suggested that we build the EDH Drinking Game format based on that. So whenever you successfully hit the opposing player with a creature, spell, or ability, you take a sip, whenever you successfully hit with a general or generals ability, you take a shot.
wow, there are some good suggestions flying around here. So, to recap, the "drinking conditions" should be:
1) Whenever a player loses 10 or less life, they have to drink a beer for that many seconds.
2) Whenever a player loses 10 or more life, they take a shot.
3) Whenever a player gains life, they may force an opponent to drink (I really like this one for my Brion Stoutarm deck :evillol:)
4) Whenever a permanent is put into a player's graveyard from play (or is RFG'd)
-----Type and amount of drink could be determined by the converted mana cost of the permanent. (follows with the life loss rules, and you wouldn't have to drink for tokens and land)
@Dr. Awesome - indeed, there are many places that have a lower minimum drinking age....... maybe I'll amend the thread title a bit......
edit:
just had a thought that would be fun in my local meta........Whenever a player takes an extra turn, they have to do a shot
Alright me and some close friends were considering this, and here are some idea's i am proposing.
1. At the end of turn if a player was dealt 7 or more combat damage from a single general that turn that player must take 2 shots.
2. Whenever a player loses 10 or more life from a non General source in a single turn that player must take a shot.
3. Whenever a player gains life, if the total life gained is 10 or greater that player may have target player take a shot.
Player abilities (optional and must be decided before the game) Player Counterspell
A player may counter target spell, as long as it is a valid target, this is an instant ability. You cannot counter a spell with split second or for example Last word and cards with similar rules text. Treat this counter spell as a standard Counterspellexcept that is colorless and has no converted mana cost, It is treated as a player ability and cannot be countered except by another Player Counterspell.
Each player can only use this ability once per game, upon using this ability that player must take 3* shots at the beginning of their next upkeep or lose the game.
*Can be adjusted to whatever number of shots the players agree to, this must be decided BEFORE the game starts.

Thoughts?
lol, one *** and everyone is wasted..........
Still think that the drinking should revolve primarily around changes in life totals.

I have 28 different EDH decks
My Experiment Kraj EDH deck is starting to look pretty sweet!
Current EDH Decks:
G Multani, Maro-Sorcerer
B Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed
GU Momir Vig, Simic Visionary
Drunk Creature
1GGG
When Drunk Creature comes into play any player make take 3 shots in 20 seconds. If a player does, sacrifice Drunk Creature.

Sounds like suicide, no?
