I am not that experienced when it comes to deckbuilding for multiplayer so I'm hoping for some advice. I built a mono black devotion deck with all the great stuff from older and newer sets. I don't have any of the cards, so before I buy the deck, I want to have a good starting point. I've come up with the following:
Here are some of my thoughts:
I think it's lacking some targeted removal, I could see me swapping the Oaths but I'm not sure due to the devotion it gives. I also would love to fit in a playset of Dark Ritual to speed things up. Another thing is Ayara, First of Locthwain but I can't find space. And another thing I would like to see is some board wipe effects like Pestilence . But maybe then some more drain effects are needed to get all the live back? Also this build is creature heavy, so symmetrical wipes are maybe not best.
I think my struggle is not hard to see. Since I didn't playtest anything it's even harder.
So I am hoping for some advice to take the deck into the right direction. For card recommendations there is not really a budget, but it should be reasonable. I will not buy pricey cards for a marginal upgrade.
For MBC you have to choose how you want to build it because the deck can't do everything. If you want a ton of creatures then board wipes aren't possible; Pestilence is no bueno in a deck full of 1/1s. Rather, your "board wipe" is curving Nightmare Shepherd into Plaguecrafter and forcing each opponent to sac 2 creatures.
One thing to consider is that you don't need to buy exactly 60 cards for your deck. There's nothing stopping you from grabbing things like Dark Ritual and Pestilence so that you can try different combinations based on your meta needs.
Thanks a lot for the answer. So swapping the Ragers for Ayara does make sense to me so I'll probably try that and will start playtesting that list.
Pestilence does not work in this deck, I can see that. I probably want to put my deck in too many directions. A reason could be that I read your Mono Black Guide (which is absolutely awesome btw), Prid3.
I'll try to stay focused with the deck. I appreciate your help.
If you were interested in a build that uses Pestilence, here is what I run. It hasn't been updated for quite some time, so this will not be 100% optimal by any means, but it has been very successful:
Like I said you can change card choices around... this is not perfect. If you were wanting to try Pestilence, though, I may do something more along these lines. Pretty much any type of MBC is fun though.

4 Dusk Legion Zealot
4 Yarok's Fenlurker
4 Phyrexian Rager
4 Plaguecrafter
4 Nightmare Shepherd
4 Gray Merchant of Asphodel
2 Oath of Liliana
4 Phyrexian Arena
2 Bolas's Citadel

Phyrexian Rager is an easy cut for Ayara, First of Locthwain if you want to add her. They fill a similar role.

20 Swamp
3 Cabal Coffers
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1 Volrath's Stronghold
Creatures (17)
4 Relentless Dead
4 Fleshbag Marauder
2 Kuon, Ogre Ascendant
2 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
1 Sidisi, Undead Vizier
4 Gray Merchant of Asphodel
4 Bloodchief Ascension
1 Phyrexian Reclamation
4 Phyrexian Arena
1 No Mercy
2 Pestilence
2 Massacre
1 Toxic Deluge
2 Mutilate
1 Damnation
Relentless Dead obviously plays very nicely with Pestilence, making sure I don't have to sacrifice it. There is also the fact that it can recur Fleshbag Marauders, Gray Merchant of Asphodels, and Sidisi, Undead Vizier if need be. Speaking of Sidisi, she acts as Gray Merchant of Asphodel #5 most all of the time, and Relentless Dead loves to be exploited.
