My mono-B Ramp deck from last month did very well at our latest Magic Night and garnered such comments as: "John must think he's playing Commander." and "You have how much mana?" and "I hate Gary." After being asked who hurt me to cause me to make so many black decks, I decided I was going to take a different approach with today's deck: my attempt to build around Tamiyo, Field Researcher. Before I go into the deck, I wanted to point out some important deck building restrictions, facts about my meta, and the inspiration behind my deck that drives why my deck is the way it is currently.
Meta Considerations
All decks MUST be legal in any format. Formats are defined as: Vintage, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Block Constructed, any Standard format (Two years worth of sets), or any Extended format (Four years worth of sets).
We use a tier system in order to separate decks into a "Fun" category and a "Serious" category. This deck aims to be a part of the "Serious" category.
Games typically have between 3 and 7 players. On very rare occasions there may be more than 7 players, but 7 players should be considered the maximum for purposes of constructing this deck.
Personal Deck Building Restrictions
I am only allowing myself to put one copy of any legendary card in my deck. Different legendary cards are acceptable as long as there is only one copy of each.
I must be able to theoretically hard cast any card in my deck.
I am currently targeting a Vintage or Legacy legality for this deck.
My friends and I are currently building decks using a very loose theme. We pick a set we like, and then we pick a card from that set and build around that card. The set I chose today is Eldritch Moon, and the card from Eldritch Moon that I chose was Tamiyo, Field Researcher. I very rarely build 3+ color decks, and have never owned a Bant deck despite it being my three favorite colors in Magic. While looking through all Eldritch Moon had to offer, I couldn't resist the excuse to build a deck around Tamiyo. However, the more time I spent building the deck, the more I realized I was having trouble nailing down a solid theme. The best I could think to do was building an aggressive deck with card draw synergies. This deck will be used at the highest tier of games that we have, so no card is off the table as an include assuming it meets the above restrictions.
The Deck
Now that all of that is out of the way, below is my current draft of the deck:
If I'm being completely honest, of all the decks I made recently, this is the one I was most unsure of. Assuming I went down the Aggro/Card Draw route that I'm currently on, there are a TON of great Bant creatures and I could take the deck in any number of directions. As this is being built for MP rather than 1v1 games, I tried to focus on creatures that synergize with card draw, or are personal favorites of mine rather than ensuring I had an appropriate curve. There's also a disproportionate amount of legendary creatures, which was not intentional, but with my legendary rule gives the deck less consistency but more diversity.
I'm also very sketchy on tri-color deck mana bases, so I could use any suggestions to improve the mana base.
Please let me know what you think, and give me any suggestions to improve the deck!
Thanks!
