With the holiday season quickly approaching I thought it might be fun to discuss some of the financial implications of the sets currently in print. Distributors are going to be offloading their excess holdings in the near future so I figured that some people might want to know what to keep an eye out for!
Brawl Decks
Dump asap. The next wave of these will be gargantuan and prices will tank. If you have any Arcane Signets get rid of them asap because they're going to plummet. Get whatever you can for whatever you have. Once the next wave hits Arcane Signet will be a solid pickup but it's too much of a known quantity to make anyone rich so don't go too deep on them. Much like Sol Ring they'll be reprinted into oblivion and settle in the 3-5 range. Still great trade fodder and perfect for any EDH deck but this isn't a golden ticket or anything. Long term the best of the Brawl Commanders will be Alela, Artful Provocateur which could push staples such as Skullclamp, Anointed Procession, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy and Divine Visitation even higher. Also, the fact that her deck comes with Smothering Tithe makes it the most profitable by a sizable margin. Alela currently goes for around 10, Signet is around 10, Tithe is like 8, so that's $28.00 already from just 3 cards! Won't stay like that forever but there's a reason why these are being gobbled up and sold for parts.
Throne of Eldraine
Generally speaking the ToE Collector's Boosters were opened in obscene quantities which have flooded the market with product. Prices are low and realistically stand to dip a bit further since I don't expect there to be nearly as much demand for a premium Standard set that most people envisioned. Still, as far as we know "this is it" in terms of supply so don't expect prices to stay low forever. This isn't going to be like Ultimate Masters or anything.
Fabled Passage will be the most played card from the set and "special" versions (foils, extended art, etc.) won't be getting much cheaper since most of the Collector's stuff has already been opened. It will dip as rotation looms a year from now but not by an insane margin. If you can get any good ideals (20% off etc.) this will probably be a decent time to grab them.
The non-Red Castles are all great pickups if you can find them in the $1.50 range. Good trade fodder, good playables, they'll all gain value over time, etc. The special versions are also solid investments that aren't likely to dip much further.
Mirrormade and Faeburrow Elder seen like the standout specs. Copy spells always gain substantial value over time and tend to settle around 5 bucks and you can current acquire playsets of Mirrormade for 4. Faeburrow Elder I've seen as low as 50 cents but the card is nuts in EDH for the same reasons as Bloom Tender. Turn 1 Elvish Mystic, turn 2 Faeburrow Elder, turn 3 [Commander] + [Spell] is always a busted sequence. Midnight Clock is a decent target if you can get them for 25 cents but the card has been panned by the EDH Community as far as I can tell.
In terms of Commons Mystic Sanctuary is going to be the most sought after card in the set so try and grab copies/foils for bulk prices. It's not going anywhere but up so I'm grabbing them at bulk prices wherever I can. The runner-ups are Witch's Cottage and Thrill of Possibility which are significantly less powerful and exciting.
Commander 2019
Expect another big wave of product to hit the shelves and for card prices to tank even further. Dockside Extortionist and K'rrick Son of Yawgmoth haven't hit their bottom yet so I'd hold off on buying them for the time being. The 3 new cards that I'd recommend trying to trade for/acquire cheaply are Bone Miser, Ohran Frostfang and Idol of Oblivion since these are best "money makers" from the set in terms of long term gains. I've been able to grab playsets of Bone Miser for less than 2 bucks a pop and I fully expect it to be a $5.00 card this time next year. Safe reprint investments include Chaos Warp, Bojuka Bog, Reliquary Tower which can often be snagged for 1-2 bucks and always rebound to 3+ within 6 months. More good trade/sell fodder.
Core 2020
The top 3 cards from the set are Field of the Dead, Vilis, Broker of Blood and Scheming Symmetry as the distant 3rd. Field is about to get banned in Standard so grab them on the cheap if you can for EDH. Vilis, Broker of Blood is going to tank once Game Night 2019 hits so grab some if you missed the boat the first time around. These cards will tank hard then steadily rise over time so be sure to grab them as soon as they flat-line. Scheming Symmetry has already bottomed out so if you can snag them for 3 bucks or less go for it. Other decent specs are Lotus Field ($4.00), Shared Summons ($1.00) and Icon of Ancestry ($1.50). Lastly, Veil of Summer is a bonkers Magic card and will continue to rise until it's reprinted. I don't think you'd lose money if you bought them for $6.00 and traded/flipped them 6 months from now but I'm personally shying away from that one at this point.
Modern Horizons
This set was printed to oblivion and is still being opened which is why prices have done nothing but fall. Still, I think that Generous Gift, the non-Green Signets (Talisman of Creativity, Talisman of Conviction, Talisman of Hierarchy) and all of the sac lands (Nurturing Peatland et al.) are good investments. The signets you'd want to grab for 50 cents or less, Gift no more than buck and the lands you'll have to pay "market value" so to speak but they've been stagnant for awhile now and I don't see them dipping much further than they already have. I can't envision a world 12-18 months from now where you could regret having bought a playset of Fiery Islets for $9.00 a pop.
There's no money in these terrible decks so don't buy them. This will tank the price of Vilis, Broker of Blood who is extremely popular in EDH so try to grab some of those on the cheap. RIP my spec on those :(. Fiendish Duo and Earthshaker Giant both seem like potential specs if they can be grabbed cheap enough but they won't bottom out for close to a year so feel free to ignore them for now.
Prices for Rot Hulk, Goblin Goliath and Avatar of Growth are going to bottom out once the last Game Night 2018 stock is dumped to make room for Game Night 2019. Anyone still looking to grab them will have their best opportunity to do so. I'm personally trying to grab Rot Hulks at 5 bucks and Avatar of Growths at 2.50 since I expect them both to experience significant gains over time.
Thanks for the info!
Scheming symmetry is definitely a card to be watched as it is the best two-headed giant card printed this year. If it had been printed in Battlebond I think it would be $8-$10 by now.
Not sure that I am as bullish on this card as you are. The card is all over standard so the price just continues to soar, currently $12+. I am not disputing its use in Standard because it is the perfect storm for it to shine (slow format, checks just rotated out and Field/Golos decks dominating). Some of that is going to change very soon.
I don't like the card in competitive eternal formats since decks that want to play this effect already havePrismatic Vista if needed and other off color fetches (landfall triggers aside of course). Modern, Legacy and Vintage players can't afford to waste time on an effect that could potentially wreck their tempo.
I don't see it being anywhere near as good as people think it is for EDH as it falls into a weird no-mans land price wise. It's current price is too much for the casual player to upgrade their 10 cent evolving wilds. Competitive players will just play their Dual/Shock/Fetches (including off color fetches and Prismatic Vista before this card), virtually ignoring it except in some niche applications.
It's ironic, the card is an apparent budget attempt at prismatic vista that isn't really budget at all. Like other standard cards, if you don't need it for standard, your best bet is to wait because this card will eventually come down in price once its standard shine wears off.
Like other standard cards, if you don't need it for standard, your best bet is to wait because this card will eventually come down in price once its standard shine wears off.
Just so we're clear I specified that I was talking about the special versions of the card. Extended art copies and such. I don't expect those to dip much since most people don't pimp out their Standard decks. I completely agree that regular copies of the card are best left until rotation. With respect to EDH playability I agree with you; I don't think that it's an especially powerful card. However, I still maintain that it will be part of the top 2 most played cards in the set alongside Arcane Signet. Power-level won't drive the price but demand will. Right or wrong tens of thousands of EDH decks are going to include it and that's what makes the "pimp" versions of this card such safe investments.
All that Glitters is better than it looks. I've seen Smothering Tithe fuel this thing to epic proportions. And most of the time, you don't know the player has this in their deck until the turn they're swinging for lethal.
I like Mystic Sanctuary a LOT. Great land, I agree with you on this one. I like the black one too, but I also agree it's not as strong.
I disagree about a ban-hammer coming for Field of the Dead. Aggro decks are strong enough right now. Gruul is definitely favourable against Field decks. Given the sideboard tools that are available in standard, like Unmoored Ego, and the quality of the creatures @ 4cmc and below to pressure ramp decks, I don't see Field going anywhere.

I disagree about a ban-hammer coming for Field of the Dead. Aggro decks are strong enough right now. Gruul is definitely favourable against Field decks. .
Field of the dead was banned. Don't get me wrong, card is fun and is a great pay off for some creative land inclusion, but the card should have been made legendary OR they needed a few more answers, be it land destruction or ways to deal with the horde.
The card is busted in Affinity/Bogles decks and will definitely be a $2.00 card someday. I'm grabbing whatever copies I can for bulk values for trade/buylist fodder down the road.
Every Blue deck can play 4 of these no questions asked. The effect is absurd. Love this card as a long-term hold. When Foils bottom out I'm going to be all over them.
I disagree about a ban-hammer coming for Field of the Dead.
I don't mean this maliciously but I laughed way too hard at this given that FoTD is already banned lol. Needless to say I'm willing to double-down on my initial assessment . Still, I maintain that Field of the Dead is a messed-up Magic card and that people should snag chap copies when they can. It's going to see tons of play in EDH and Modern (much less in Modern but still a competitive inclusion) while being a casual all-star. I absolutely love the long-term trajectory of this card's value.
Banned on the 24th, I made my comment b4 the ban. Laugh all you like.
I'm really surprised it's banned.
Standard has now effectively killed off ramp decks. I'm disappointed they're banning it now, yet when Scapeshift was in the format it was just fine. Makes little sense to me. I know it's a strong card, and a strong deck, but playing the deck on Arena it doesn't often feel that way, as quite a few aggro decks can kill you before the engine can get up and running.
Oof. I hope that anyone looking to buy Extended Art Fable Passages got some because it looks like the window to snag them is already gone lol. I knew that they were going to go fast but not THIS fast O.O. I also maintain that rotation isn't going to have much of an impact on this one so if you can still find them for cheap at an LGS or something now's the time to try and grab them. You can only open in these in the collector boosters and this will see enough EDH (and possibly Pioneer?) play that prices will never dip to reasonable amounts ever again.
I should probably stress that the window to buy cheap Faeburrow Elders is going to close sooner rather than later so if you wanted to snag ~20 for buylist/trade fodder you don't have much longer. People are going to realize that Bloom Tender is a $50.00 card and look to cash in on that down the road. Mirrormade is also starting to slowly rise so if you can still find them in the $1.00 range you're looking at a free triple-up within the year and an easy $5.00 staple within 2-3 years. $20.00 today for $100.00 in 3 years is a solid ROI assuming that you can live without it :P.
Next, I want to bring attention to Return of the Wildspeaker. It can comfortably be acquired for as low as 25 cents as is being played in close to 10% of newly posted Green decks. (400/4000 total since its release). You can probably buylist 50 copies of these at $1.00 each to Cardkingdom within the year which will give you $65.00 in store credit at the cost of $12.50 + shipping (both ways). And it only gets better if you take advantage of promos. You won't be making money hand-over-fist with these but I have my 50 that I'm going to sit on and sell back because $40.00 is going to snag me a couple of Recurring Nightmares or whatever and I'm cool with functionally buying them for $10.00 a pop after shipping.
Lastly, Chainer, Nightmare Adept here https://www.cardkingdom.com/mtg/commander-2019/chainer-nightmare-adept-foil looks like free money to me. The card is selling on TCG for around 2.50 based on this and this so buying copies for $1.00 seems like a no-brainer. Even if the card somehow manages to bottom-out at the $2.00 pricepoint you're still going to be able to sell them back to card kingdom for 2-3x the value in like 6 months. And that's your worst-case scenario. Smart money is buy them out, wait for 2 years and sell them back for 5-6x the profit. So if you want a super easy cart buy you 8 copies of Chainer, your 8x Return of the Wildspeaker and then whatever else you need to hit the $25.00 minimum for free shipping. Something like:

These kinds of carts are free money. Extended Arts of EDH staples are going to be money money money a few years from now and while it's too late for Fabled Passage you can still grab things like Faeburrow Elder and Mirrormade on the cheap. I would be completely and utterly shocked if I couldn't ship this exact same cart back to Card Kingdom in a year for at least twice what I paid.
Other cards that you can use to fill carts to $25.00 include Talisman of Conviction, Talisman of Hierarchy, Talisman of Creativity and Generous Gift. Nongreen Talismans are free money since MH1 has basically bottomed out at this point and once the singletons are no longer tied to the price of the booster box (1-2 more months) everything that's overpowered is going to start rising steadily.
I wanted to quickly add that I don't think that many people understand how Extended Arts work. These are only available in the Collector's boosters and we're already past the peak supply for those. We're not going to magically see a ton more dumped into the market because even once the collector's bundles hit the shelves in Walmart and such we're talking about single packs as opposed to boxes. That is, we're going to see new product hitting the market but only in small quantities. We are literally living in the only timeline where these cards can be acquired on the cheap because once these initial waves are bought out from the big players we're going to start seeing double-ups and even triple-ups for the chase cards of the set.
With that in mind I have no idea what people are thinking with some of these prices. I've already snagged playsets of cards like Castle Locthwain, Wishclaw Talisman, Ayara, First of Locthwain and The Cauldron of Eternity for under $10.00 per. In fact, most of my Cauldrons were around 6. Let that sink in. Regular art The Cauldron of Eternity is selling for $3.00 and people are giving away a version that 100x more rare for a 100% increase in price. It's utter lunacy. Castle Locthwain in particular I've been grabbing as many copies as I can because it's going to see play in Standard, EDH and Pioneer and in like 1 month everyone is going to realize that the market is already dry and people were selling the ultra-limited version for $9.99 alongside the regular copies for $1.99. 5x the price might sound like a lot but it's legitimately peanuts compared to how scarce the supply of these Extended arts actually are. And to anyone who doesn't believe me, look no further than my first post where I said "Fabled Passage is a good buy" and now it's bought-out from the market entirely and nonfoil extended arts are going for like $40.00. There's no supply to depress that so that is new low for that card and it's only going to continue to rise. It truly boggles my mind that people don't think that the exact same thing is going to happen to cards like Castle Locthwain, Castle Garenbrig, Gilded Goose, Oko, Thief of Crowns, The Great Henge and every other multiformat staple.
Lastly, I'll stress that Faeburrow Elder currently has a 22% play rate in EDH (22% of all newly posted that could include the card do include it) so the window for the Extended arts is going to close sooner rather than later. People are going to look back at this post and laugh when they realize that copies were selling in the $10.00 range. The only reason why I'm not grabbing them all myself is because I don't have infinite funds lying around and I've already bet the farm on Castle Locthwain. So we can look back at this a few weeks/a month from now and see how I'm doing with that investment.
This made them a poor buy opportunity for me, even with free shipping. A shame, because I quite liked Card Kingdom and had many orders.
I am not sure how you are trigger free shipping at $25 because I can't trigger free shipping UNTIL i hit $100 or more, which is what I used last time I ordered. My $106 USA order was shipped free, but I had to pay 22.76 in fees and taxes.
Happy to be proven wrong, but as far as I know, nothing has changed since early in 2019
I know I stopped buying from Card kingdom because customs was opening all their packages and dinging myself and many others with a handling fee of $10, plus taxes on the entire order. This is verified by a simple google search and talked about on Reddit by other fellow Canadians.
Oh trust me when I say that I believe you. I'm also Canadian (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and I also had to stop shopping at CK ever since they started declaring the full value of your package. We don't get free shipping unless it's for $100.00+ USD singles orders. Currently the fees on a $100.00 $USD order are around $20.00 which, when combined with the cost of shipping cards back to them, kills any reasonable profit-seeking opportunities for us Canuks. I'm posting this for the Americans lol.
Miniature Market was my other go-to since they used to have 99 cent shipping and the best prices. Then they killed the 99 cent shipping for Canadians about a month ago.
Now I'm sad because I lost all of my good outlets :(. Currently I'm buylisting to Starcitygames.com but that's only because my specs tend to line-up well with their sales. I went HARD on Paradoxical Outcome at 75 cents and now that's it's Buylisting for $2.00 (+ store credit bonus) it's an easy triple-up. I'm just waiting for my main Pioneer spec to speak before selling out of the format save for the deck that I want to play. The prices in that format are going to crash and burn and I feel bad for the people who jumped on overpriced crap like Deathrite Shaman. 100% sell into the hype!
The ToE allocation period has officially ended which means that Wizards will no longer be artificially restricting the supply of booster boxes. Since the current expected value (EV) of a booster box is around $100.00 USD and everyone and their mother can get them for 80-85 this means that prices are expected to soften by around 15-20%. This means that if you've been holding off on expensive staples like Murderous Rider/The Great Henge and don't want to wait until rotation you'll have a chance in the coming months to grab them on the cheap. Otherwise, it's also going to mean a second flood of bulk cards so you'll have another shot of grabbing your multiplayer staples.
While these holiday fatpacks contain a collector's booster the EV is lackluster so I don't expect them to fly off the shelves nor have a significant impact on the prices of most extended art cards. I wouldn't recommend buying these.
Second Wave of ToE Collector's Edition
While I'm selfishly annoyed to learn that Wizards produced a second wave of ToE CE for Europe I don't expect this to have a significant impact of prices over here in NA. I still feel as though the CE extended art cards are criminally undervalued so I'm more than happy to keep scooping them up while a huge chunk of players are panic selling their product.
A lot of people are down on these but I think that people are going to be kicking themselves 2-3 years from now for not grabbing some. I vehemently disagree with the neigh-sayers who think that it's a top-heavy set that only rewards the people who open Okos and Questing Beasts. Rather, I think that it's relatively deep once you factor in the lands and multi-format allstars that see play in EDH and Pioneer among other places. I wouldn't pay $269 + shipping but I'm waiting for Black Friday Sales and Ebay coupons to snag these in the 250 or less range which is basically the best that I can do as a Canadian. I refuse to believe that these won't be $500.00 booster boxes within 3 years if my trajectory for extended arts (foils and regulars) is even remotely close to what I predict it to be.
Brawl
Brawl is getting a massive second wave in early December which should help with the prices of cards like Arcane Signet. If you're persistent you can find outrageously deals like https://www.gamenerdz.com/magic-the-gathering-throne-of-eldraine-brawl-deck-set-of-4 which are complete steals. Even as a Canadian I only paid $84 USD shipped ($112 CAD) which is $80 CAD savings vs me buying them from Walmart. Given that these all come with a Shock Land, a Scry Land, Arcane Signet, Command Tower, Korvold (who is like 15-20), Smothering Tithe, on and on and on it seems foolish to me that you wouldn't be scooping them up at that price. I'm not even going to crack mine; I'm going to sit on them and see what happens.
Commander 2019
Prices have bottomed-out and haven't changed for weeks. If you're looking to pick up any singles or spec on anything wait for a coupon/Black Friday sale and go to town because it's not going to get significantly lower. I'm still very high on Bone Miser and have been grabbing playsets in the $2.00 a pop range. Card Kingdom is already offering $1.95 in credit (and the decks are still in circulation) so I'm feeling pretty good about it.
Also, remember last time when I talked about Chainer, Nightmare Adept at 99 cents? Now he's sold out at 2.79 and they're offering 2.08 in credit. Anyone who bought those can already ship them back for a double-up or do what I would do and sit on them for a bit longer. Return of the Wildspeaker isn't there quite yet but it's already doubled from 25 cents to 59 cents. What I'm highlighting here is why these pickups are such free-rolls and how they can make buying magic significantly cheaper.
Extended Art Castle Locthwain (Foils and Nonfoils): I'm either going to look like a total idiot or a complete genius with how much money I've pumped into this card. It sees play in Standard, EDH and Pioneer and I expect it to become even more popular when Theros hits assuming that monoblack is remotely playable. The monoblack pioneer decks already play 4, every Black EDH play 1, plenty of Standard decks play 1-2 and if monoblack is a thing in Theros they're all going to need 4 as well. I don't see how it's possible for the $10-12 USD pricetag to hold given that regular copies of the card are already going for $4-4.50. I know that I already mentioned this last time but I still think that these are a buy even though the price hasn't changed in weeks. Like I just don't understand how people can keep offering this card at that price when they A) can't keep it in stock for more than a day and B) they can't even keep the regular frame copies in stock.
Extended Art Castle Vantress and Castle Garenbrig (Foils and Nonfoils): These also seem like safe investments for the exact same reason as Castle Locthwain. After all, they're both fantastic in Standard, Pioneer and EDH. The reason why I don't lump all 3 together is because Castle Locthwain has a higher probability of being played as a 4-of once Theros hits and because it's already seeing significantly more Pioneer play. So dumping money/trades into these seems like a slightly worse play. I realize how biased that sounds considering that I own a ton of Castle Locthwain's myself but the reality is that my pockets and influence aren't nearly deep enough to move the needle on its price and so I can only make money if there's real demand for the card.
Gadwick, the Wizened: At 25-50 cents I feel that this card is extremely undervalued. Much like Return of the Wildspeaker I'm trying to keep my buy-in price as low as possible because I don't want to be buying these for a buck a pop or anything but some vendors are almost giving him away. In many ways it's like a Mulldrifter with a more relevant ability and given that Devotion will be returning in Theros I'm expecting a UUU 3 drop that rewards you for casting U spells to be a key component of the deck. I'm not going deep into hundreds of these or anything but when I'm buying cards I like to check on his price and snag them if they're cheap enough. Card Kingdom has them for 35 cents for example so a set of 8 only runs you $2.80 total. I don't mind dumping 10 bucks into 8 playsets because worst case scenario I'm down a McDonalds meal. Upside is I'm shipping these back to CK for $2.00 a pop 3-4 months from now and feel like a total genius.
THB is being opened and one of my favorite things to do is snag batches of rares that I like from CardKingdom while they're still selling for 25 cents. That also means that it's time for a quick buylist. Among other things I'm shipping back:
Since these are some of the cards that I've previously discussed. I'm probably going to get dinged on some of the card for quality so it'll probably be closer to $35.00 after shipping and reductions but it's still a decent payout. This isn't a brag post or anything; I want to show how you can play the game "cheaply" if you take advantage of these kinds of opportunities. $35.00 doesn't pay for my entire purchases obviously but it comes very close. It means that I can buy things like:
And even after shipping I'm still in the black. I'm going to toss in some other specs so that I can keep the chain going for Ikoria but I'm also sitting on things like 8x Phyrexian Altars that I bought for $15.99 per that I could already ship back for $21.45 and Extended Art Castle Lochwains bought for $10.00 that could be sold for $13.00. I'd like to get more for these however so I'll see what I can get for them next time. It takes a bit of time and energy but it's decent money for not a lot of work.
Brawl Decks
With respect to Uncommons, I'm buying/trading for as many Deafening Silences, Drown in the Lochs and Syr Konrad, the Grims at bulk prices as I can get. Foils, non-foils, everything since it's all free money. Others that I'm trying to grab for bulk prices and/or cheap foils are things like Tournament Grounds, Inspiring Veteran, Heraldic Banner, All that Glitters, Into the Story and Kenrith's Transformation. There's currently tons of supply and very little demand for these cards so if you keep your eyes peeled you can essentially grab them for free and they're all going to rise to "real card" prices.
Game Night 2019
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/game-night-decklists-2019-10-14
Game Night 2018
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/introducing-magic-game-night-and-updated-gift-pack-2018-08-27

Scheming symmetry is definitely a card to be watched as it is the best two-headed giant card printed this year. If it had been printed in Battlebond I think it would be $8-$10 by now.
I do LOVE the art!

Fabled Passage for me, is one of the better cards in the set, simply due to it working for so many decks. I really like this one.

Happy to be proven wrong, but as far as I know, nothing has changed since early in 2019
Oh trust me when I say that I believe you.

Pioneer
I'm excited about this format and what it means for MTG Finance. Throngs of multiplayer staples have shot up in price which is amazing if you already owned them. Ramunap Ruins, Deathrite Shaman, Assassin's Trophy, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Siege Rhino, Supreme Verdict, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Hour of Promise, Emrakul, the Promised End and many more all saw significant gains and can be sold for a tidy profit. With respect to investing, I'm personally tracking cards that have applications in Standard, Pioneer and EDH because anything that hits all 3 seems like a no-brainer acquisitions to me.
ToE Bundle Gift Edition
https://www.gamenerdz.com/magic-the-gathering-throne-of-eldraine-bundle-gift-edition
ToE Collector Booster Boxes
https://www.gamenerdz.com/magic-the-gathering-throne-of-eldraine-collector-booster-box

My Recent Specs

20x Arcum's Astrolabe for $5.00
8x Tymaret Calls the Dead for $2.00
8x The Cauldron of Eternity for $7.92
8x Treacherous Blessing for $3.12
4x Woe Strider for $5.16
4x Endling for $2.00
And even after shipping I'm still in the black.
