Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some experience with MP mill.
In the past I've used mill as a way to feed the grave, think Wight of Precinct Six, Nighthowler, Bonehoard.
The new Psychic Corrosion is a ripper for blue decks. Can't help thinking of Sire of Stagnation
I bought a set of these and I'm looking for something new to do with it.
I've tried Psychic Corrosion along with Mesmeric Orb with a mono-blue deck packed full of draw.
It turns into a pure race, it's fun to play, and fast enough to win if people don't take you out.
Cards like Frantic, Visions & Brainstorm are all quite efficient should just a single Corrosion be out. Multiple corrosion are ridiculous.
But my friends are onto this deck. Corrosion doesn't last a turn if someone is packing a Reclamation Sage.
So I'm looking at other options.
Cards like Windfall, Dark Deal & Whispering Madness all do a fair bit of work to mill opponents without Orb or Corrosion on the table, so I'm looking at whether a deck running all 5 of these might actually work in MP. Ideally I want to keep the curve as low as possible, so I'm not sure these all get in.
Has anyone built a deck with these three cards here? What did it look like?
Have you looked to win by pure mill with this combination of cards, or by some sort of pain combo like Liliana's Caress?
Narset, Parter of the Veils is a strong card in duels. In MP land, have you found you get hated out for it? So far I find the card immediately makes the whole table turn on me for turning off their blue filter, perm-based draw and the like.
Winds of Change doesn't discard, Wheel is out of my price range.
Sphinx's tutelage, like you say, isn't as good. I think Memory Erosion might be a better choice to this should I choose to play it.
In the context of multiplayer Constructed Narset, Parter of Veils might be the strongest card printed in the last 10 years lol. It's slightly behind Waste Not in terms of sheer oppression (doesn't kill on turn 2 as consistently) but it's almost certainly the most powerful card printed since it was released. You're spot on when you say that she turns the game into Archenemy but that's because they took Leovold, Emissary of Trest, made him easier to cast and decided to give him a free Dig Through Time. Um, what? Excuse me? What they were smoking when they printed her is beyond me because my experience with Narset is that she comes down, ticks up for a card and then asks the table "can you remove me?" If not the game ends ~90% of the time that you untap with her because at that point you've gotten 1-2 digs for any Wheel effect (plus cantrips etc.) and assuming that you do the Narset -> Wheel combo you've essentially won. Obviously there's still luck in Magic and I've lost games from that position but that's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. Because let's face it, what's the risk? She comes down and Peer Through Depths for a powerful spell to replace herself. That's your floor. And yeah, that's not broken in a world of cards like Manifold Insights but when the upside is "turn 3-4 I win the game" and the floor is "marginal card selection" the risk reward is horribly skewed the wrong way.
Moreover, she's still bonkers in "fair" decks. Even if you're not doing Wheel shenanigans she's still a Dig Though Time that costs 3 mana and that has a nutty passive effect. Given that she's a mono color card in the color that already loves spells it's hard to imagine a world where she's not a reasonable 2-4 in your Blue decks. Yeah, people will focus her down, but so what? You only to need to untap with her once to get your 3 mana Dig Through Time and even if she's only a temporary solution to card draw it's not costing you anything to run the gambit. So I'm more than happy to play her as a massively improved Augur of Bolas for my Control decks even if I'm not interested in any combos whatsoever. Especially if you're also in Black it's so easy to pair her with cards like Innocent Blood and Massacre that all-but guarantees your Dig Through Time even if people prioritize attacking her.
Also, that passive. Putting aside combos etc. the number of good players who've ran face first into her passive is obscene. I mean grinders who jam games online and participate in tourneys (including the MPL) who forget about these new PW passives. It's not just Narset, it applies to all of them, but the number of times that I've seen someone cast a Brainstorm only to "discard 2 cards" (you know what I mean) blows my mind. I've done it too! Not with Narset as much but I'd cast tutors into Ashiok and discard into Tamiyo only to realize that I'm an idiot. So even when you put aside the degenerate combos/card advantage/power that they bring to the table they're also these on-board tricks that routinely "get" people with their outrageously pushed passive abilities. It's like your brain stops working because you see a card like Tamiyo, Collector of Tales that draws cards, Regrowths, fuels revival and Delve, etc. and you think "this card couldn't possibly have any more upsides." Then you Duress that person to remove their Wilderness Reclamation or whatever only to realize that nope! There's still more! These cards all feel like they're under-costed by 1-2 mana or something along those lines.
Oh, and while I realize that Narset doesn't stop everything she stops more than enough to feel relevant. So I'm aware that she doesn't affect things like Impulse, Necropotence, Manifold Insights, Fact or Fiction, Ad Nauseam, etc. but she's still disruptive against enough of the most commonly played card advantage spells to put some serious screws to people. It's not that I think that she stops everything nor does she have to to have an overwhelming presence on the table even in the absence of 2-card combos like Waste Not/Narset, Parter of Veils -> Windfall/Dark Deal.
And the funny part is that the second best card in the set is probably Narset's Reversal. Don't even get me started on that card -_-.
Ha ha - yeah I love both Narset cards too. I picked up a full set of Narset, Parter of Veils as soon as I saw it available for pre-order.
Ok, so here's where my mind is at. I feel a sweeper might help, but Skulker & Waste Not may be enough. I'm trying to keep the curve as low as I can, given Mill usually draws hate, so no Sire of Stagnation for now. I love the idea of a couple Dream Salvage in here, but the card feels *win-more*. That said, it would work with Waste Not....
EDIT: I'll be chucking a singleton Eldrazi in here to shuffle my grave back into the library.
2nd EDIT: Probably +4 Lim-Dûl's Vault (cos I have them) to find Waste Not & Corrosion
One of my groups plays with the rule of "playset legal in either vintage or legacy means you can play the card as a 4 of". So a card like Brainstorm can be played as a 4 of. Cards like Sol Ring, Demonic TutorWindfall are only allowed as a 1 of because they aren't playset legal cards in ANY format.
I too was surprised that windfall was banned and restricted awhile back, my playgroup was quick to point it out
I've yet to see anyone maintain a consistent opinion when it comes to multiplayer banned and restricted lists so it's unsurprising that people get confused. Unless the cards are banned in your playgroup then you're fine. It didn't magically become illegal just because another group banned its use in theirs.

I agree with what you are saying, there are a ton of different house rules out there but I don't think the other poster is saying his groups way is the only way to play. I think he is saying that 4 windfall is akin to playing 4 sol ring or 4 demonic tutor. After all, you yourself talk about how busted waste not into windfall or smothering tithe into windfall all the time. You also frequently state that you yourself are not a fan of house rules b/c of the slippery slope it creates when it comes to peoples magic cards.
Ultimately, every group should play the way they want and adjust their decks according to the power level of the group. If someone was going to play 4 windfall against me, I would assume the deck is optimized to abuse the card and I would break out my illegal decks as well. I mean at that point, no list is being followed so whatever.

That's totally fair and on point. Kitchen table Magic falls under house rules of course and how others play isn't really my concern. My point was that the deck isn't constructed legal by ANY B&R list and I was simply pointing it out. As I stated before, I too at one time was unaware that Windfall was banned in Legacy and restricted in Vintage. I would want others to help me keep my decks legal.
My play groups tend to run B&R similar to what TechnicolorMage described. If it's legal in Legacy rock four of, if not it's restricted. Works out pretty well for us.
I would want others to help me keep my decks legal.
That's my point though lol. There's nothing "illegal" about putting Windfall in your casual deck. If someone can point to me the rule that states otherwise, I'm more than willing to eat my words, but until then I don't understand why we're vilifying people for having fun playing a card game. The Legacy B&R list is just that; the Legacy B&R list. It's nothing more than that. So unless you're playing in a sanctioned Legacy B&R event it's wholly meaningless.
Let me put this another way. What if I started using the same logic for Innistrad Block Constructed and told everyone who didn't adhere to that card list didn't have a legal deck. Would people accept that or would they call me crazy? The second one right? Well how is the Legacy B&R list any less crazy? There's nothing about objectively legal/illegal about it either. I just don't understand how anyone can confidently state from a position of objective truth that people who have 4x Sol Ring or 4x Windfall in their decks have illegal lists. There's no such thing as an official B&R list for casual magic (be it multiplayer or otherwise).
My play groups tend to run B&R similar to what TechnicolorMage described. If it's legal in Legacy rock four of, if not it's restricted. Works out pretty well for us.
Yeah our group plays similarly, but we do have a bit of wriggle room, depending on the context of the deck.
I get that Windfall is a banned card in Legacy, but I'm not rocking a storm deck with Lion's Eye Diamond or Infernal Tutor, so I don't see how this card is broken, given the context of my deck.
Here's the version I took out last night for kitchen-table magic;
Some mill protection might be good, but I lent my only Kozilek, Butcher of Truth to my wifey, playing her Post-ramp deck.
Ideally I'd be playing fetches with Brainstorm, but I'm using them in another deck. I did take a handful of cards with me, like a sideboard, I ended up chucking in 4 Crux of Fate & 2 Leyline of the Void after getting destroyed by shuffle-Eldrazi. Thanks wifey...
It did ok, and was consistently able to assemble the pieces. Fun deck to play, although very vulnerable to hate. I won a single game in a 5 player FFA, out of 5 total, which was better than I expected since they knew what deck I was on, and ganged up on me in most of the games. Everyone hates mill it seems...
Playing Lim-Duls Vault was a good call. Chasm Skulker was pretty good, although it did become a Clone target with my opponents once they realised the tokens had island-walk. Yeah... that backfired a little! LOL Maybe some Jace's Phantasm next time I take the deck out.

First off, I never vilified anyone, I pointed out it must be nice to be able to run four Windfall. If you take exception to that, fair enough! I stand by what I said and I highly encourage players to build legal decks following some official constructed list UNLESS the entire group is playing anything goes. It's no fun for players to show up to a table with their Modern deck only to see people drop some turn 1 Vintage "I win" deck.
Second, Yes, there is no "official" list but I am willing to bet that the vast majority of players who play casually do follow one of the official B&R lists. Two posters have said they do and many others have said as much in all the "help make my deck better" threads on this forum. The evidence seems to indicate as much, although this particular site isn't as busy as it once was.
Prid3, I love your reviews, I love your deckbuilding ideas, you are clearly passionate about the game and have far greater overall historical game knowledge than I do. However, in terms of playgroups NOT following some sort of B&R list, I think you might be wrong on this one.
First off, I never vilified anyone... I highly encourage players to build legal decks
Vilify might be hyperbolic term but stating that someone is doing something illegal is a serious charge. This is especially true if they're innocent of the alleged crime. I want to stress that there is nothing (and I truly mean nothing) illegal about putting Windfall in your casual decks. They won't be legal in sanctioned Legacy events but unless you're fraudulently trying to pass them off as such you're in the free and clear from a moral and legal perspective.
However, in terms of playgroups NOT following some sort of B&R list, I think you might be wrong on this one.
We did have a B&R list back when I used to play (non-EDH) Constructed multiplayer. I agree that it's good idea to employ one; never said otherwise. Still, it wouldn't cross my mind to accuse someone of building an illegal deck just because they didn't adhere to my casual house rules. We, as a Magic "society," collectively agreed to adhere to the terms and conditions for our personal enjoyment but we never imposed those restrictions on third-parties. What other people do is none of my business and so I leave those decisions to the playgroups themselves. I only take offence when people start overtly imposing their views on others such as telling them "you're doing something wrong by not following [IMAGINARY RULE]" when no such rule exists.

Leovold, Emissary of Trest
Narset, Parter of Veils
Smothering Tithe
Notion Thief
Alms Collector
These are my preferred Wheel enablers. Narset, Parter of Veils is duuuuuuuuuuuuuumb.
Guilds of Ravnica - Commander 2018 - Core 2019 - Battlebond - Dominaria - Rivals of Ixalan - Ixalan - Commander 2017 - Hour of Devastation - Amonket - Aether Revolt - Commander 2016 - Kaladesh - Conspiracy 2 - Eldritch Moon - Shadows Over Innistrad - Oath of the Gatewatch - Commander 2015 - Battle for Zendikar - Magic Origins - Dragons of Tarkir
Green - Blue - Red - White - Gold
Sphinx's Tutelage isnt as good as corrosion but can mill 4 cards of the same player for 1 card drawn.
In the context of Windfall, Dark Deal & Whispering Madness, Waste Not here as a 2-drop fits very well on curve. Great suggestion.
Notion Thief combo with Psychic Corrosion and a mass draw spell like Windfall is just stupid. Ha!
Narset, Parter of the Veils is a strong card in duels. In MP land, have you found you get hated out for it? So far I find the card immediately makes the whole table turn on me for turning off their blue filter, perm-based draw and the like.

Windfall is restricted? What about Dark Deal & Whispering Madness? Are these banned in your group too?
To be honest, I'm probably going to cut Treasure Cruise, as Visions essentially does the same job by that stage of the game.
Why would Dark Deal or Whispering Madness be an issue? Neither card is banned or restricted?
