So I thought I'd change things up my 5-colour deck.
My (current) 5-colour deck runs a Cascade-build into Hypergenesis, with fatties that care about multiplayer, like Hydra Omnivore, Caller of the Pack etc. It's quick, gets the whole table involved and usually ensures a bit of chaos for all involved.
Another previous version ran Dream Halls, with Conflux and bombs.
Question is;
If I'm going to pursue a 5-colour deck, what other worthy build options could I consider?
Note - we don't play with infinite combo's. Not considering Nephilims Cheers
The first question you have to answer for yourself is, why do you want to play 5 colors instead of less? With 5 clors you have access to pretty much any card and can thus play pretty much anything. That's an overwhelming amount of options and you can only fit a tiny portion into a deck anyway. So why not choose a less color intensive portion of those options and inherrently reduce the effort nessessary for the mana base to accomodate those cards.
One reason for playing 5 colors is because 5 colors matter. There are a bunch of abilities in the game that reward you for playing many colors, like domain (eg. Exploding Borders), converge (eg. Skyrider Elf), and sunburst (eg. Skyreach Manta). Many of those cards actually benefit from cost increases that you could add in as well.
Another reason is, because you want to play 5 color cards like Chromanticore, or abuse 5 color cost recductions like on the Bringer cycle or Fist of Suns, or similar stuff.
5 color control. A control deck that takes the best spells from every color.
Yeah this is kind of where I'm leaning towards - a good-stuffs deck - but I'm not sure how I want it to look.
Cards like Door to Nothingness, Coalition Victory, Bringers and the like don't inspire me at all.
Global Ruin looks like a powerful card to build around. I'm not sure I want to necessarily, given everyone hates land destruction, but being able to effectively shut down Cloudpost, Tron, mono-coloured decks or people who don't play with basics, is enticing.
My manabase consists of a combination of a small number of rainbow, fetches, basics and tri-lands. Obviously my manabase would need a few tweaks to work with this card, which I'm sure is going to hurt my consistency, probably even creating mana-screw. Not sure it's worth it....
If you want to build a 5C control deck I would consider building around bring to light. It is amazingly versatile in fetching exactly what you need at any given time and gives you an excuse to go 5c by allowing you to run one ofs of a ton of the best of the best cards. If I were building this I would run it in a shell along with gifts ungiven and seasons past. ROFLThopter might provide an effective and resilient win-con that you can fetch with gifts. Or you could just crackling doom repeatedly until everyone concedes or dies.
Thanks again everyone.
I have a pretty embarrassingly large card collection of MP staples, and a few good legacy choices too, so any suggestions are welcome.
Aforementioned options, but also:
Control, steal .... big plays.
I like the sound of these. I actually run a few decks that use a LOT of stealing & cloning card choices, like Phantasmal Image, Control Magic etc.
As far as control goes, I have quite a few great cards like Pernicious Deed, Blasphemous Act, Supreme Verdict etc.
I used to run a BUG deck a while back with Deed and thievery effects - Deed would kill the weenies, and then I'd steal the biggest threats. Fun times.
Usually those 5 color goodstuff decks arent made because "I want to play 5 colors" they are made because. "I need (awesome cards are awesome)
This is where I want to be. I'm thinking of just simply playing with big-value cards (not necessarily big-cmc), no matter what the colours happen to be.

So far I'm considering whether I should build a good-stuffs deck including Global Ruin.
GR would demand running mostly basics, probz half forests with a small number of spells like Farseek, fetches & Evolving Wilds-types, to grab the other lands. This approach would demand I concentrate on card choices 5-cmc and below.
Keeping the manabase basics I think hurts, more than it adds value, so I'm not sure about this one.
If I was going to concentrate on creatures, I'm thinking value creatures like Siege Rhino, Mantis Rider, Anafenza, the Foremost, Voice of Resurgence etc. would be the way to go, but I'm not sure I want to go that way...
I think, you are misunderstanding Global Ruin. You don't need basic lands for it, just basic land types. Meaning, you need lands that have the types Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest. Thus you can use the shocklands (eg. Overgrown Tomb) and other such nonbasics. Or simply play Prismatic Omen.
Yeah I'm still tinkering with a few idea's. A lot of them.... still haven't figured out what I like.
I have a few to think about - a artifact build, domain, the regular 5c choices like Last Stand etc., Slivers and a few more.
I don't think I'll pursue Global Ruin, LD isn't popular lately, a certain someone has been abusing Wildfire a bit.... (he he)
But the one I'm liking most, even without any sort of synergy is simply goodstuffs.
For me, I wanna play with Baleful Strix, Crackling Doom & Dark Intimations cos they rock in MP.
By running these above, Pyromancer's Goggles does tempt me to lean on red a bit more...
Ghave? Hmm... I've not played with Ghave before, mainly because a mate of mine does.
He runs Managorger Hydra types with Kamahl, Fist of Krosa etc. ...it gets silly. Ramos, Dragon Engine with Ghave might be too silly to chase...
Pyromancer's Goggles might get in there if I decide to cut creatures and go with more spells.
I've owned Genju for years but never played it. A big beatstick post-boardwipe is my thinking.
The Mimeoplasm works well with Crackling Doom, nuf sed.
I'm seriously considering 2 Bloodbraid Elf, given it works to fetch up Knight, LA & Doom.
Honestly, I think I'm going to run quite a few different versions and see what I have fun with.
Looks like a nice beginning.
Not sold on the Rhino’s unless you want to repeatedly trigger them as main wincon, but that’s not my idea of fun.
Four copy or steal effects might be more fun.
(Hmmm... they do seem nice Rite of Replication targets, now we’re on the subject of copying)
Personally I wouldn’t leave home without two copies of Austere Command but maybe that’s just me.
Not sold on the Rhino’s unless you want to repeatedly trigger them as main wincon, but that’s not my idea of fun.
Nah this part of my patented "burn 'em out" curve of Baleful Strix into Crackling Doom into Siege Rhino into Dark Intimations. I've talked about it a lot in my own 5CC builds so I'm positive he borrowed it from me ;). The idea is that you're not only generating CA and being disruptive but you're also incinerating faces at a fast clip. Once you start recurring Rhinos with Intimations it's all over but the crying.
Fair point, but I've always been pretty happy with the rhino's in MP.
Prid3 - I think I've mentioned previously - I will steal idea's without remorse Credit where it's due of course (tips hat)
I agree with you, but I might resist running it for now. I run that fella in a mean deck with Ankh of Mishra, Bloodchief Ascension, Tariff and drain stuff, it's not a popular one. "Alpha-strike" comes to mind....
FWIW, your list like it might benefit from 1 or 2 Torment of Hailfire.
Given how fast your manabase is, is PotP really a deal-breaker here?
....or are you just wanting to play with gold cards?
So I looked up the price of DRS not that long ago (cos I never ended up buying them due to price) and it's fallen quite a bit.
Think I might pick up a set...
Given how fast your manabase is, is PotP really a deal-breaker here?
I mostly don't want an X spell that can't be paid in any part by a 4-of land in my deck. This also isn't really a ramp deck since I only have the DRSes for acceleration.
DRS is great and the bans have gone a long way to making him affordable. Kinda. You still need fetches but even the bad ones work fine.
I've played almost this ^ exact version by Pride, minus all the new GRN cards, because my playgroup has fizzled a bit. The decks a house, and will win so many games. I can't imagine how much fun it is to loop Plaguecrafters. And on his last point, yeah, sometimes I would waste evenings trying to figure out which package to build to deck, because they're all fun and all good.
So I thought I'd change things up my 5-colour deck.

Yet another idea is to go for the Coalition Victory or the like.
And of course, you could just play 5-color-good-stuff, where you simply play the best each color has to offer.
Some card cycles span all colors and could make a basis for a deck. Like the Zubera and Shrine cycles in Kamigawa.

Actually you can of course choose any team.
Graveyard fun with reanimation from any yard can be nice too. (Havengul Lich style)

If you choose a theme we’ll help.
My meta: 3 or 4 player free for all, anything goes but boring games or broken decks cause a vote to end that game.

Or even: awesome cards gathering dust / shiny new toys.
Any avenues you consider?

Bring to Light isn't a card I remember. Thanks!
Crackling Doom is exactly the kind of card I want to play with. Consider it a 4-of in the deck.
I like the look of Legacy Weapon, Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder & Chromanticore as 1-of's.
Maelstrom Nexus looks cool, but it's out of my price range.

As far as a genuine win-con goes, I'm yet to make my mind up.
Which of course opens interesting +1/+1 counter venues.
Choices choices.
As long as you run a few wincon’s a good stuff deck is satisfying.
(remember card draw, sweepers and maybe life gain?)

This was the shell and then I added whatever I felt like playing. It's more of a "cards I like" deck than anything else. That being said recently I've switched over to Nicol Bolas, the Ravager versions of the deck instead with Discovery // Dispersal, Disinformation Campaign, Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh and other fun bombs.

23x Land
Creatures (12)
4x Burglar Rat
4x Plaguecrafter
4x Nicol Bolas, the Ravager
4x Preordain
4x Waste Not
4x Discovery // Dispersal
2x Mission Briefing
4x Disinformation Campaign
2x Connive // Concoct

2x Dark Intimations
1x Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh
Tons of ways to build it though. Vamp package of Asylum Visitor + Sangromancer + Arterial Flow is great for example. Syphon Mind and Geth's Grimoire are bonkers. If you go for more burn with DRS and Shrieking Affliction then Angrath, the Flame-Chained is nuts. On and on and on. Totally depends on what you feel like playing/what you prefer.
