Hey team! Wanted to quickly share some tips/tricks/deckbuilding advice regarding one of my favorite archetype; GrixisWaste Not. It's an extremely powerful, versatile and flexible archetype that thrives in everything from 2HG to 2 player FFAs to 8 player slug-fests. It can be as fair or broken as you want it to be so you can either go for turn 2 kills or turn 20 marathons. There's also plenty of ways to make the your own so you don't have to follow a cookie-cutter build to make it work. Let's start with a sample deck:
This isn't what I consider to be the "best version" of the deck by any means but it showcases the cards and synergies that I'm going to highlight. The deck starts off modestly with ETBT lands such as Crumbling Necropolis and/or cantrips such as Preordain to start smoothing its draws. If you happen to own Deathrite Shaman + Fetchlands that's also an ideal opener but for the purposes of this article I'm going to shy away from the overly expensive options. From there it's ideally looking to jam a Waste Not as that's the most powerful card in this archetype but things like Baleful Strix and Fellwar Stone also fit the bill. Moving on the deck is going to start punishing hands/creatures with cards like Arterial Flow, Fleshbag Marauder and Liliana's Specter whiile building towards bombs such as Geth's Grimoire, Nicol Bolas, the Ravager, Dark Intimations and The Eldest Reborn. At that point the card advantage starts flowing like a river as you'll be stripping your adversaries of their resources while amassing a ludicrous quantity of your own. To top it off you have things like Asylum Visitor, Sire of Insanity and Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh to ensure that you adversaries never claw their way back into the game.
With respect to synergies, I'll only briefly touch on the ones that aren't obvious. Fleshbag Marauder tends to be the de facto removal spell for the deck given that Dark Intimations can buy it back as needed. Speaking of Dark Intimations curves, Sangromancer is one of the stronger lifegain options for the deck specifically because of that sequence. Assuming a 4 player game that's already 18 life and it's only going to skyrocket from there (especially if you have an active Geier Reach Sanitarium). Moreover, cards like Asylum Visitor and Sangromancer are vampires and thus trigger the health gain portion of Aeterial Flow. This is especially relevant when you're getting beaten down and/or riding your "Baleful Force" to victory. Otherwise, Geier Reach Sanitarium is low-key one of the strongest cards in the deck since it continues to trigger things like Waste Not and Geth's Grimoire even if players are Necrogen Mists locked. Lastly, "any player" recursion such as Animate Dead and The Eldest Reborn is bonkers in discard decks since fatties tend to be the first things pitched.
Now, as I previously stated this is by no means the other way to build the deck. Here's a small list of cards to consider when fleshing out your curve:
As you can see there's tons of ways to build the deck and many could look vastly different that the one that I showcased. For example, if you want to build around Wheels then you'll still want Waste Not but you'll also want things like Notion Thief to take full advantage of the effect. You can also build defensive versions of the deck that eschew the mass card draw engines in favor of things like Ensnaring Bridge that lock creatures out of the game. After all, you can sit on cards like Necrogen Mists and Sire of Insanity to lock everyone at 0 cards and win via Shrieking Affliction, Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh, etc.
For those of you who have a bit more money to spend, I'd like to briefly express my love for Dack Fayden. Not only is the card a constant source of discard (even if players are locked at 0 cards) but it can also steal opposing mana rocks to give you a much needed early-game boost. He also boasts immense synergy with Notion Thief since the combo forces a player to discard 2 cards while you draw 2 cards every turn. That's fantastic even if you don't have a card like Waste Not in play. Otherwise he's a solid looter that helps dig into action (namely your power spells like Waste Not) so the card is always relevant. In fact, he's one of the stronger cards in the archetype and makes the Red splash feel even better than it already is.
It's worth mentioning that the "Wheel" version combos off very quickly in multiplayer thanks to the insane mana generation from Waste Not when more than one opponent is discarding lands. As soon as you resolve one Wheel effect, not only will you draw a bunch of cards but there should be enough Waste Not mana to cast a Liliana's Caress and a Dark Deal or Ill-Gotten Gains immediately to continue the chain. You should have the gas to draw/discard a few times and hopefully kill them immediately with Liliana's Caress.
Using the Vintage B/R list, unpowered. This is far from optimal but should give a good idea of how wheels can be chained quickly for profit.
Instead of trying to go off immediately, you can build up a slower Legacy or Modern legacy multiplayer version with wheels. Build to a position where you wheel once or twice and then dump the Waste Not mana into a big spell like Torment of Hailfire or Death Cloud. After the Waste Not triggers resolve you should easily win that game.
Nope, you use Cut // Ribbons! It functions as a removal spell early on and still works from your GY which is incredibly relevant when you're wheeling and dealing. When I was building that deck I spent a lot of time trying to find the optimal 1-card win condition and in testing C//R blew the competition away.
Prid3, I really like your builds, but seeing these be makes me wonder how aggressive your meta is. What kinds of decks do you play against and how would you change the first build to compete in a creature heavy environment?
How would you change the first build to compete in a creature heavy environment?
All of your creatures are fliers so I'd field some Earthquakes or something along those lines. You can can also go up to 4 Strixes and/or Marauders. Massacre works well too (since it's free) even it kills some of your dorks. Specter doesn't really need to live.
I've recently been working on this kind of deck type, and I came up with my own version which I would like to use in a multiplayer group. I should add we play in teams, mostly THG but not only. It's quite competitive, so I'm really trying to optimize everything in that regard.
Regarding the lands I would really like to play Geier Reach Sanitarium, as I consider it having great synergy with Notion Thief. The other lands are kind of set. Do you think I would need more? In my opinion there is enough draw and stuff like that going on.
You will also see that there are 61 cards. I don't know which one to cut.
Also I would like to know if any more finishing options are necessary, or if more ore stronger creatures are needed.
But it also depends on how competitive that you want to be. There's a million ways to build the deck that include more reasonable cards like Burning Inquiry, Mind Rake, Burglar Rat and Liliana's Specter. Mind Rake was an extremely powerful addition to the archetype and I'm glad to have it :).
Nah it's fine. There's no right or wrong way to build an EDH deck. I do think that it's a mistake to omit things like Burning Inquiry and Mind Rake though because I can't think of anything better to cast post-Bolas. Even if you don't have another land you can swill go WN + Inquiry/Rake for obscene value. I'm also not a fan of Phyrexian Arena in Blue decks because I'd rather have things like Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Painful Truths, Manifold Insights, Verity Circle, etc. There's better things to be doing.
I run Cut // Ribbons in the Exsanguinate slot because it still works when milled/discarded to your Wheel effects. It also doubles as cheap removal making it the best AOE burn spell for the deck. If you do keep Torment mentally compare it to Cut // Ribbons and count the number of games where you're sitting there with 40 Black mana and a useless Torment in your GY. If it happens more than once and you're still not playing Cut // Ribbons I don't know what else will convince you :P.
If you're not sold on Burning Inquiry play games until you draw it. I have a feeling that the first time that you go turn 3/4 Bolas into turn 4/5 WN + Inquiry you'll never look back. It's literally 1 mana for 9 WN triggers which is horrendously overpowered. Mind Rake, by comparison, is 2 mana for up to 6 WN triggers (can be fewer though) and it's still bonkers. Inquiry is completely obscene.
OOC how much have you played with Waste Not in 4+ player games? I don't think people appreciate how overpowered that the card is until they see it in action and once you do you'll be kicking yourself for thinking that cards like Burning Inquiry are cuttable. The fact that you can curve Bolas into WN + Inquiry + Counterspell protection gives you one of the most brutally overpowered lines imaginable in a multiplayer game.
waste not is by far my absolute favourite card. i have a pox styled deck (pretty similar to the one you posted) in mono black and everyone absolutely loathes it (except me).
i have no qualms about the power of inquiry if i can consistently draw WN. but in oathbreaker/edh styled decks i'm afraid WN (being run as a singleton) just isnt consistent enough which is why i tried to gain value by stuffing the decks with all manner of discard to generate value over time until either bolas comes out or i strip my opponents of their hand which in a way is a war of attrition
ill gotten gains is indeed fascinating. let me think about that one

FWIW Emrakul, the Aeons Torn > Elixir of Immortality. It still works when milled/discarded and you can legit cast it off of Waste Not mana at times. Turn 1 Land + Gemstone Caverns/Mox Diamond/Chrome Mox + Waste Not, turn 2 Windfall + Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is typically GG.

Ponder, Preordain, Brainstorm, Vampiric Tutor, Burning Inquiry, Mystic Remora, Demonic Consultation
Demonic Tutor, Cut // Ribbons, Dark Confidant, Gilded Drake, Tainted Pact, Lim-Dul's Vault, Fellwar Stone, Signets, Talismans
Wheel of Fortune, Windfall, Dark Deal, Timetwister, Narset, Parter of Veils, Rhystic Study, Laboratory Maniac, Necropotence
Notion Thief, Geth's Grimoire, Jace, Wielder of Mysteries, Whispering Madness
And then the typical interaction spells like Rolling Earthquake, Swan Song, Flusterstorm, Mana Drain, Toxic Deluge Force of Will, etc.
My deck wouldn't be very fun to play because I'd go for the turn 2 Signet, turn 3 Bolas, turn 4 Waste Not + Windfall draw every game and then win with cards like Lab Man, Jace, Cut // Ribbons, etc. For backups I like Demonic Consultation/Tainted Pact to exile your whole deck and then win with Laboratory Maniac or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries. Tainted Pact means you can't play duplicate cards (so no basic lands) and Demonic Consultation just requires you to name a card that isn't in your deck. Like Mudhole or whatever. The games where you go turn 2 Signet turn 3 Laboratory Maniac + Demonic Consultation and then win off a Gitaxian Probe are sweet. Tutors can always be played for value so they're never bad draws and Lab Man/Jace are already solid in Waste Not decks.
