Rebuilding/Revamping an old V-weapon deck to try and maybe shake things up in my playgroup for a few weeks. (Originally, I hoped to maybe streamlinethings to a single color but then I realized the templating of both actually prevents them from working like the oldones. Jerks.)
Anyway, remember that scene in the movie 'Misery'?
The current numbers are a little ridiculous but I think you get the idea. Would like to figure out an actual win-con this time around. Tarmogoyf and Gnarlwood Dryad immediately came to mind, although they would pretty much require fetchlands. Also thought about something like Dread to 'mop up' whatever they get out before I can go off. Anything else just totally fit here?
Thought about this but man, it's gotten expen$ive. (Lands are likewise a concession to budget realities.)
Would also like to avoid this nothing-but-4x-build so any other decent ideas you guys have for 1-2x subs in the list above would be appreciated too. Yawg's Will is actually a concession to multiplayer. I might get a little more mileage out of the spells that way.
Oblivion Sower is a more than reasonable card on its own, and gets downright unfair after you've used Splinter to extract someone's entire supply of basic lands from their deck. Use something like Cut // Ribbons or Exsanguinate to finish the table off once you steal 20 lands.
Thran Forge??!! I literally never realized that is what this card does. I remembered the card and (vaguely) it's effect but never realized it turned things into artifacts. It's crazy they put that effect in the game so early on. Good call!
Exsanguinate or not, I'm not sure I'll find a more appropriate (or more pleasing) win-con than that...bravo, sir. I will look into this.
I've seen decks that try to abuse Liquidmetal Coating many times, and I have to be the skeptic and ask, how do these types of decks win? For the life of me, I don't understand, because although you can take out the most powerful threat on the board, hat's still only one threat. Thran Forge certainly helps and adds redundancy, but can any please explain how a deck like this takes on 3+ opponents at the same time?
Finally on a lighter note, Splinter targeting a basic into Oblivion Sower is more than enough reason to make me want to at least try this deck
EXACTLY RIGHT. You strip out their stuff but then how to win...? This is harder to pull off in MP than a duel but it can often lead to some fun politics. Mostly, this deck will be used to punish a few people who run borderline-oppressive combo decks at least 3/4 of our games. Like--please sit down and let the rest of us play a game of Magic, please?
In the past, I never really worried about it--I just crippled someone and got killed myself.
I do think Tarmogoyf and O-Sower will get the job done sometimes. They're just big dumb beaters and (hopefully) larger than anything an opponent could get out before I killed their resources. And for those that don't, a single Exsanguinate can cheese it out. Yawgwill gives me a second chance if I get stopped. If it doesn't work out, I'll try upping some numbers. I have lowered many of the 4x to 3x and that freed up some slots. 23 lands--we'll see how that goes. I now have Fetches/Shocks in there to help any Goyfs or Dryads.
I could very easily see tuning this back to monocolor. I've just had success with this Golgari in the past--it's just where I picked back up. I did want to go monoblack..
A big meta problem i anticipate with the Splinter plan is there's no reason for the player with no lands left in their deck not to scoop once they've been essentially shut out. It's very possible you pull off your trick to no benefit because the player simply chooses to leave the game to enjoy some pizza.

An completely acceptable outcome. I expect this to happen a lot, actually.
It definitely puts a damper on the Oblivion Sower idea since all of the conceding player's lands would be exiled when they leave the game. So there's probably not much point in trying to steal them in the first place.
